Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your encoder or relay is running on your Linode, start it inside a detached tmux session before closing SSH. Detach with Ctrl+B, then D; the server-side process can keep running after your SSH client disconnects. Use an enabled systemd service if it also needs to start after a Linode reboot. Neither option guarantees YouTube will continue receiving the stream if the host, network, encoder, or YouTube ingest fails.
First check where the streaming process runs
Disconnecting SSH affects your remote terminal session; it does not necessarily stop a process running independently on the Linode. If encoding or relaying happens on your own computer instead, keeping an SSH session open—or detaching a Linode shell—will not keep that local encoder running.
There are three separate layers to consider:
- SSH and the shell: the connection between your computer and the Linode.
- The encoder or relay: the process that creates or forwards the video stream.
- YouTube ingest and broadcast: YouTube receiving media and keeping the broadcast available.
tmux helps the process survive loss of the SSH client by keeping its terminal session on the server. It does not fix a failed process, a Linode outage, an unstable outbound connection, or a problem with YouTube ingest.
Keep the process running after SSH disconnects with tmux
- Connect to the Linode over SSH. Start a new tmux session with
tmux, or use an existing session that already contains the encoder or relay. - Start the encoder or relay inside that session. Confirm that the process is running and that YouTube is receiving the stream before you detach.
- Detach without stopping the session. Press Ctrl+B, release the keys, then press D. You should return to the ordinary shell while the tmux session remains on the Linode.
- Close SSH. The detached server-side session can continue even after your SSH client disconnects.
- Reconnect to inspect the session. SSH into the Linode again and run
tmux attachto return to it.
If the process is already running in screen or another persistent session manager, use that session manager rather than starting a second copy. Starting another encoder or relay unintentionally can create competing processes or streams.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What tmux does—and does not—cover
| Situation | What to use or check | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| SSH disconnects or you log out | A detached tmux session (or an existing persistent screen session) can keep the server-side process running. |
That the encoder remains healthy or YouTube continues receiving media. |
| The Linode reboots | Configure a systemd service and enable it to start at boot. |
That the service starts successfully, reconnects to YouTube, or restores the broadcast without interruption. |
| The process is alive but YouTube stops receiving video | Check encoder or relay logs, outbound connectivity, bitrate, the RTMPS URL, and the stream key. | That a terminal session manager can repair a network or ingest problem. |
Start the stream again after a Linode reboot
A detached tmux session is not a boot-time supervisor. If the server reboots, configure the encoder or relay as a systemd service and enable that service at boot. A service can also provide a place to configure process management, but simply enabling it does not prove that YouTube ingest has recovered.
Test the service startup separately from the broadcast: check whether the service starts after reboot, then verify in YouTube that media is arriving and the broadcast is in the state you expect. Exact service configuration depends on the encoder or relay command, files, account permissions, and environment; use values appropriate to your installation rather than copying a generic unit that may not match it.

Verify the YouTube connection and troubleshoot drops
YouTube’s encoder setup uses the RTMPS stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Configure the encoder or relay with those values. Treat the stream key as a publishing credential: do not post it publicly, and replace it if it is exposed.
- The stream stops as soon as SSH closes: the process may have been launched in the SSH shell rather than inside the detached session. Reconnect, check whether it is still running, and start it inside tmux before detaching.
- The process is gone after a reboot: tmux does not restore a process after host reboot. Configure and enable a systemd service for boot startup, then test it.
- The process is running but YouTube has no incoming video: inspect logs and confirm the configured RTMPS URL and stream key match the current values in Live Control Room. Check outbound network health as well.
- OBS shows dropped frames or a degraded connection indicator: OBS identifies an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain as possible causes. Check the Linode’s outbound connection and reduce bitrate if it exceeds what the connection can reliably carry.
- OBS disconnects from the server: Linode’s RTMP guidance warns that an excessive streaming rate can cause OBS to disconnect. Check the selected rate against the available connection rather than assuming tmux will prevent drops.
A persistent terminal session keeps a process attached to the server, not a stream immune to network, host, encoder, or platform failures. Avoid treating a running process or a started service as proof that viewers are still receiving video.

Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is an alternative if your goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that keeps looping without leaving a computer or Linode process running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It streams to YouTube, not from a camera or to other platforms.
