There is no documented, universal “best” Linux VPS for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Choose by what the server must do, then verify the plan’s sustained CPU access, outbound transfer allowance, network throughput, and region. If you want an always-on YouTube stream without maintaining a server, StreamNeo is the first alternative to consider: it loops uploaded videos in the cloud at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
Which VPS should you choose?
DigitalOcean and OVHcloud are useful examples to compare, but the available provider specifications do not establish a reliability or value winner for continuous YouTube streaming. DigitalOcean documents shared- and dedicated-CPU Droplet options and CPU-optimized plans for sustained, CPU-bound workloads such as video streaming and encoding. OVHcloud publishes VPS resources, traffic allowances, and public bandwidth by plan. These are starting points for evaluating current plans, not proof that either provider will keep a stream uninterrupted.
| Provider or option | What the cited information establishes | How to evaluate it for a 24/7 stream |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; one always-on stream per slot, any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. | Best fit if you do not want to maintain a Linux server or keep a computer running. It is not a VPS and does not stream from a camera. |
| DigitalOcean | Linux-based Droplets offer shared and dedicated CPU plan types; CPU-optimized Droplets are positioned for sustained CPU-bound workloads. Plans include outbound transfer, and additional outbound transfer is documented at $0.01/GiB. | Consider sustained CPU access if encoding on the server. Estimate egress and check the selected plan’s current transfer pool, throughput, region, and billing rules. |
| OVHcloud | Its VPS page advertises Linux installation options, plan resources, backup features, traffic allowances, and public bandwidth ceilings. | Compare the current selected plan’s bandwidth ceiling and included traffic separately; confirm the Linux distribution, region, and recovery options. |
DigitalOcean’s own guidance says, “Choosing the right Droplet plan depends on your workload.” The distinction that matters most is whether your VPS encodes video or only relays an already encoded stream. Encoding is CPU-intensive; relaying has a different workload, so do not choose a minimum server size based on generic advice. Measure the actual workload and leave headroom.
Size the server for its real job
If the VPS encodes the video
Encoding turns a source video into the stream sent to YouTube. It can keep CPU busy for long periods. DigitalOcean describes CPU-optimized Droplets as appropriate for sustained CPU-bound work, including live/video streaming and encoding, and distinguishes shared CPU from dedicated CPU. That guidance supports considering sustained CPU access, but it does not establish a universal instance size for a particular resolution or encoder. Test the actual source, codec, frame rate, and chosen settings on the candidate plan.

If the VPS only relays the stream
A relay forwards an already encoded stream and avoids the encoding workload, but still depends on stable network throughput and continuous outbound transfer. Start with a small representative test and monitor CPU, memory, network use, and dropped or delayed frames. Increase resources only when measurements show a bottleneck.
Compare two different network limits
- Transfer allowance: how much data the plan includes over its billing period, and what extra egress costs.
- Throughput: how quickly the VPS can send data at a given moment. A generous monthly allowance does not prove that a port can sustain your stream rate.
DigitalOcean says Premium CPU-Optimized Droplets can provide up to 10 Gbps network throughput. OVHcloud lists public bandwidth ceilings by plan. These are provider-published plan specifications, not end-to-end guarantees for a YouTube stream. Check the current specification for your selected plan and region, and allow headroom above the stream’s target bitrate.

Estimate 24/7 outbound data before buying
Multiply bitrate by streaming time to estimate outbound stream data. The examples below use decimal units and assume continuous streaming for 30 days; they are arithmetic, not provider benchmarks. Real usage may be higher because of protocol overhead, reconnects, and other traffic.
| Continuous video bitrate | Approximate outbound stream data in 30 days | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | 324 GB | 1 megabit/second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 |
| 6 Mbps | 1,944 GB (about 1.9 TB) | YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p at 60 fps, multiplied by 30 days |
| 10 Mbps | 3,240 GB (about 3.2 TB) | YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps, multiplied by 30 days |
| 12 Mbps | 3,888 GB (about 3.9 TB) | YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 60 fps, multiplied by 30 days |
YouTube’s current guidance lists 6 Mbps for H.264 at 720p/60 fps, 10 Mbps at 1080p/30 fps, and 12 Mbps at 1080p/60 fps. These are recommended video bitrates, not universal requirements; choose settings for the resolution, frame rate, and encoder you intend to use. Audio and other traffic add to total transfer.

DigitalOcean’s billing documentation, last verified 14 September 2026, says Droplets receive plan-specific outbound transfer, pooled across a team; inbound Droplet transfer is free, and additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01/GiB. Calculate your expected monthly egress, compare it with the plan’s included pool, and apply its current overage and unit conventions. Recheck the current billing documentation and the actual purchase-region plan before committing. OVHcloud’s traffic allowances and bandwidth are plan-specific, so compare the selected offer rather than relying on a provider-wide assumption.
Set YouTube ingest and encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps, with constant bitrate encoding. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream connection. For a typical H.264 stream, its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. For example, a 60 fps stream with a two-second interval uses a keyframe every 120 frames.

- Use the ingest protocol supported by your workflow; prefer RTMPS when available.
- Set the encoder to constant bitrate and use the bitrate appropriate to the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Set keyframes every two seconds, and do not exceed four seconds.
- Protect the YouTube stream key as a password. Put it only in the intended encoder or relay configuration; do not include it in public commands, screenshots, logs, or support posts. If exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the sender.
- Test with representative audio and motion, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream.”
HLS is another YouTube ingest option, but it is not simply interchangeable with RTMP. YouTube specifies HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and no byte ranges. HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments rather than continuously as RTMP does. Use it only when its workflow or codec advantages justify the extra constraints and latency.
Deploy and validate a continuous stream
- Choose a region near the source or intended operating location. Compare current plan resources, CPU type, transfer allowance, throughput, Linux images, and recovery options. Provider pages do not establish which region will deliver the best route to YouTube for your channel.
- Decide whether to encode or relay. Identify the input format, output codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate first. Avoid sizing on a guessed CPU requirement; run a representative test on the selected plan.
- Configure the sender and YouTube event. Use YouTube’s supported ingest settings, protect the stream key, and configure the encoder or relay to restart after a process or connection failure if your software supports it.
- Run a sustained test with representative content. Check CPU and memory use, network throughput, actual transfer consumption, YouTube stream health, and whether audio and motion remain correct. A short successful start does not establish 24/7 reliability.
- Monitor and plan recovery. Alert on process exit, lost input, rising resource use, and YouTube ingest errors. Keep a way to restart the service and replace a compromised stream key. Provider backups can help recover server data, but do not by themselves guarantee a live stream stays connected.
Copyright, reused content, and continuous programming
A VPS does not grant permission to rebroadcast videos, music, game footage, or other people’s work. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for the channel and content involved. A technically healthy stream can still receive a copyright claim, block, or other platform action. Repeatedly looping content also does not guarantee monetization; YouTube assesses channels under its policies, including rules on reused content. Keep records of licenses and permissions, and review the copyright safety checklist before scheduling a long-running feed.

Costs and reliability: what the published specifications do not tell you
The cited DigitalOcean and OVHcloud pages provide plan specifications, not a controlled comparison of 24/7 YouTube uptime, packet loss, or interruptions. Advertised transfer and port-speed figures are useful screening criteria, but they do not establish that a particular stream will remain uninterrupted. Reliability must be assessed on the actual workload and route, with monitoring in place. Provider prices and configurations vary over time and by region; verify the current plan and billing terms before purchase.
Or let it run in the cloud
