Run FFmpeg as a foreground systemd service, enable it at boot, and configure systemd to restart it after qualifying failures. Then verify both the VPS process and YouTube playback: a running FFmpeg process does not prove that the public stream is still advancing.
What you are configuring
There are two separate jobs: starting the FFmpeg process when the VPS boots, and restarting that process if it exits or times out. systemd handles both, but neither guarantees that YouTube is receiving playable, advancing media. Add a separate stream-progress check and confirm the result in YouTube.
The steps below apply to a Linux VPS with systemd, such as a typical Ubuntu installation. Paths, account names, FFmpeg options, and YouTube ingest settings depend on your own installation; adapt the examples rather than copying them blindly.
Prepare the playlist and credentials
Keep files in stable, service-accessible paths
Store the video and audio files, playlist files, and any scripts in locations that will still exist after reboot. Use a dedicated, unprivileged service account where practical, and ensure it has read access to the media and playlist files. A service that works from your interactive shell may fail under systemd if that account cannot access a directory or if a relative path resolves differently.

One common FFmpeg approach is to use concat-demuxer file lists for the video and audio inputs and loop each indefinitely. The exact command depends on your media formats, stream layout, installed FFmpeg build, and desired output. Test the command as the same user and with the same paths that the service will use.
Protect the YouTube stream key
Get the current stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public repository, share it in screenshots, or expose it in publicly accessible logs. Restrict access to any configuration file that contains it. Recheck the current URL, key, and required protocol in Live Control Room instead of assuming an old endpoint remains valid.

YouTube documents RTMPS and HLS setup, while some FFmpeg configurations use RTMP. These choices are not automatically interchangeable; use an ingest protocol and endpoint supported by your current YouTube stream configuration and FFmpeg build. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live streaming setup guidance.
Create a systemd service
Run FFmpeg in the foreground under systemd. Do not background it with & or use a shell-only startup shortcut: systemd needs to track the actual process so it can apply the restart policy.

- Write and test the FFmpeg command. Use absolute paths for the executable, playlist files, media, and any configuration. Confirm it can publish successfully when run as the planned service user. Keep secrets out of command history and public logs.
- Create a unit file. For example, place a unit such as
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-playlist.serviceunder systemd’s system-unit directory. In its[Service]section, set the service account, working directory if needed, and anExecStartthat runs FFmpeg in the foreground. ChooseRestart=on-failurefor a long-running process that should be retried after an error exit, and add a modestRestartSecdelay to avoid an immediate retry loop. - Set the boot relationship. Include an
[Install]section with an appropriate boot target relationship for the VPS. The correct target and any ordering requirements depend on the machine and how its network is configured. - Reload, enable, and start. Run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadafter creating or changing the unit. Then runsudo systemctl enable --now youtube-playlist.service. Enabling configures activation at boot;--nowalso starts the unit immediately. You can instead enable and start it separately. - Check the unit and logs. Run
sudo systemctl status youtube-playlist.serviceand inspect its journal withsudo journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service. Confirm that FFmpeg opened every input and that the output connection was accepted.
systemd imposes start-rate limits to prevent a rapidly failing service from being restarted indefinitely. If repeated failures hit those limits, inspect the journal and correct the cause before clearing the failed state or changing the limit. Avoid raising limits simply to hide a broken command or unavailable network.
For the relevant service settings, consult the systemd service documentation and unit documentation. The documentation is rolling; check the behavior supported by the systemd version installed on your VPS.

Choose the right recovery layers
FFmpeg output recovery and systemd restart policies solve different problems. Use them together where suitable, but do not treat either one as proof that the viewer-facing stream is healthy.
| Layer | What it helps with | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg output recovery | Options such as attempt_recovery and recovery wait settings can retry some output failures while FFmpeg remains running. |
It does not configure boot startup or prove YouTube is displaying advancing video. |
| systemd boot and restart | Boot enablement starts the service after reboot; a policy such as Restart=on-failure can restart it after qualifying process exits. |
It cannot detect every silent freeze in the remote stream. |
| Stream-progress monitoring | A watchdog or external check can alert or act when media progress stalls, while YouTube-side checks confirm ingest and playback. | A local process counter alone does not establish that viewers receive healthy output. |
FFmpeg option support and behavior can vary by installed version and output protocol. Check the documentation for the version on your VPS before relying on a recovery option.

Test a reboot and verify the actual broadcast
- Schedule a maintenance window and reboot the VPS with
sudo reboot. - After it returns, check
sudo systemctl status youtube-playlist.serviceand the unit journal. Confirm the service started and FFmpeg did not exit with an input, permission, or output error. - Check YouTube Live Control Room for incoming media and the stream’s ingest status.
- Open the viewer-facing stream and confirm that the picture and audio advance. Do not rely only on service status, process uptime, or a local frame counter.
- Test your progress monitor by checking how it detects a stalled feed and what recovery action it takes. Keep an alert path that still works if the VPS itself is unreachable.
An implementation report describes a silent freeze where local process indicators continued advancing while YouTube playback appeared frozen. That is one operator’s report, not evidence that the same failure is common or has one universal cause. It illustrates why process health and stream health need separate checks.
Understand what an FFmpeg restart does to YouTube
Restarting FFmpeg re-establishes encoder output; it does not necessarily create, start, schedule, or end a YouTube broadcast. YouTube represents a liveStream and a liveBroadcast as separate API resources. If your intended workflow requires automated broadcast lifecycle management, handle that separately and confirm the desired behavior in your YouTube setup. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The unit does not start after reboot: Check that you enabled the correct unit, reloaded systemd after editing it, and used an appropriate
[Install]relationship. Inspectsystemctl statusand the journal for unit syntax or dependency errors. - It starts manually but fails under systemd: Run the command as the configured service user. Replace relative paths with absolute paths, verify directory permissions and working directory, and check that the executable and media files are available to that account.
- The service repeatedly exits: Read the FFmpeg error in the journal. Check input paths, playlist formatting, media access, network availability, and the selected ingest URL and protocol. A restart policy will repeat a failure; it will not fix its cause.
- The service is active but YouTube has no advancing picture: Check Live Control Room and viewer playback, then inspect FFmpeg output and media-progress monitoring. A live process or increasing local counter is not sufficient evidence of a healthy remote stream.
- The stream key is rejected or output cannot connect: Verify the current key, URL, and protocol in Live Control Room. Check that credentials were not accidentally changed or exposed, and that the endpoint matches the encoder configuration.
- Retries stop after rapid failures: Look for systemd start-rate-limit messages in the journal. Fix the repeated underlying error and allow the service to recover according to its configured policy; do not mask the problem by making retries unlimited.
- The encoder reconnects but the broadcast behaves differently than expected: Check whether the broadcast itself must be started or managed separately. Reconnecting media output does not automatically handle every broadcast lifecycle action.
