To stream a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from AWS Mumbai, run an encoder on an EC2 instance in the Mumbai region (ap-south-1), then send the file to the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it, allow reliable outbound internet access, and check the preview before going live. This is a DIY architecture based on AWS and YouTube documentation; the exact FFmpeg command and suitable EC2 size depend on your video and encoding workload.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • An AWS account with permission to launch and configure an EC2 instance in Asia Pacific (Mumbai), region code ap-south-1. AWS lists its EC2 service endpoints by region at Amazon EC2 service endpoints.
  • A video file and an encoder installed on the instance. FFmpeg is one possible encoder, but the right command depends on the input file and installed build; the settings below are YouTube guidance, not a tested FFmpeg recipe.
  • A network path from the instance to the public internet and enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the chosen stream bitrate.

Set up the YouTube Live stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a new stream or select a scheduled stream. YouTube’s walkthrough is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. In the stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key. The key is a credential: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep it out of scripts that might be shared, public repositories, and logs; reset it in Live Control Room if exposed. See Manage live stream settings.
  3. Choose whether the event should start when YouTube receives the encoder feed or wait for you to click Go live in Live Control Room. For a scheduled event, start the encoder and verify its preview before starting the public broadcast.

Launch and network the EC2 encoder in Mumbai

  1. In the AWS console, select region Asia Pacific (Mumbai), ap-south-1, and launch an EC2 instance. Choose its size based on whether you will copy/remux the video or transcode it, the source resolution and frame rate, and your reliability needs. The cited AWS and YouTube documentation does not establish a specific instance type or benchmark for this workload.
  2. Choose a network design. A public-subnet instance can reach the internet through an internet gateway if it has public addressing and the subnet route is configured. A private-subnet instance can use a NAT device for outbound connectivity without having a public IP. AWS explains these options in Add internet access to a subnet and Manage the IPv4 addresses for your EC2 instances.
  3. Check the route table, DNS resolution, network ACL, security group and any egress firewall rules. The host needs outbound access to the YouTube ingest endpoint and selected protocol; it does not need an inbound media port for this workflow.
  4. Restrict administrative access. Do not expose SSH or RDP to every source address; allow only known administrator IPs or use an appropriate managed access method. Review Create a security group for your Amazon EC2 instance.

Configure the encoder and choose stream settings

Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder, select the prerecorded file, and configure an output compatible with YouTube Live. Prefer RTMPS when available: YouTube recommends it as the encrypted extension of RTMP. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions when configuring a specific encoder, because guidance can change.

Setting YouTube guidance Practical use
Protocol RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS. Choose RTMPS if the encoder supports it and use the matching server URL from Live Control Room.
Video codec H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 are listed. Confirm your encoder and source workflow support the selected codec.
Audio codec AAC or MP3 are listed. Check that the output contains the intended audio track and channel layout.
Rate control Constant bitrate (CBR) recommended. Set a stable target bitrate that your network can sustain.
Keyframe interval Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds. Set the encoder’s keyframe interval accordingly.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps supported. Match the source and intended output; more frames and higher resolution require more bandwidth and potentially more encoding capacity.
SDR color Rec. 709, 8-bit. Use these SDR settings where applicable.
Stereo audio 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps recommended. Use the stereo recommendation if the program is stereo.
5.1 audio AAC, 48 kHz, 384 kbps recommended. Use only when your source and delivery are configured for 5.1.

For SDR H.264, YouTube recommends 6 Mbps for 720p30, 8 Mbps for 720p60, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These are recommendations, not guaranteed minimums; match output to source quality and a stable uplink. YouTube also recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. See YouTube streaming tips.

Start, verify, and end the broadcast

  1. Start the encoder process with the selected file, output settings, YouTube server URL and stream key. The exact command or UI steps vary by encoder and file; verify that it is sending rather than assuming a successful launch means the feed is healthy.
  2. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and inspect video, audio, and stream health. Fix a black picture, missing audio, unstable bitrate, or ingest warning before clicking Go live for a scheduled stream.
  3. Monitor the instance and network throughout the broadcast. If the stream drops, check the encoder process, instance health, route/NAT, DNS and egress rules, then restart the feed and confirm the preview returns.
  4. When finished, stop sending from the encoder and end the event in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder workflow.

Loops, files, and YouTube policy checks

A file-playing encoder can send prerecorded material as an encoder feed, but the streaming setup does not grant rights to the video, music, or other included material. Confirm you have the necessary rights and review YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and policy guidance before broadcasting. A successful technical preview is not a copyright or monetization approval. If you want a continuous loop, configure the encoder’s playback behavior deliberately and test what happens at the end of the file; repeat behavior depends on the encoder and command or playlist configuration.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
YouTube does not receive a feed Confirm the stream URL and key are copied from the selected Live Control Room event; verify the encoder process is running, DNS works, and the instance has outbound access to the ingest endpoint.
Connection fails from the EC2 instance Check subnet routing, public addressing or NAT, security-group egress, network ACLs, DNS, and any firewall restrictions. Do not add broad inbound rules for a feed that is sent outbound.
Stream is unstable or drops frames Check sustained egress bandwidth and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if the connection cannot reliably carry the chosen output.
Video stutters or the instance is overloaded Determine whether the encoder is transcoding. Transcoding can require substantially different compute from stream-copy/remux; instance sizing is workload-specific, so test the actual file and settings rather than assuming a size.
Preview appears but audio or picture is wrong Inspect the source tracks and encoder output, then verify codec, frame rate, color settings, audio codec and channel configuration against YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
Key no longer works or may be exposed Recheck the key associated with the active event. If compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration.

Cost and architecture choices

An EC2 workflow has at least two distinct cost questions: the compute instance and its runtime, and the network/storage configuration used for the file and outbound stream. This guide does not give an EC2 cost estimate because instance type, duration, storage, transfer and network design vary, and the cited sources do not provide a workload-specific total. Compare a public-subnet instance with a private-subnet instance using NAT based on operational simplicity versus network isolation; neither choice removes the need to verify egress.

For a DIY server, the Mumbai region identifies where the EC2 host runs; it does not by itself establish a latency or availability guarantee for YouTube ingest. Likewise, there is no universally correct instance size: stream-copy/remux and video transcoding have different compute demands.
