You can use a Raspberry Pi as the host for an encoder that sends a continuous music-and-visual stream to YouTube. First, make sure the music license explicitly permits a creator-operated 24/7 YouTube livestream and any archived VODs: Chillhop Music’s official Creators FAQ says, “Please do not use our music to create your own 24/7 music stream.” The setup below covers the Pi workflow, YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, and the rights checks to complete before you go live.
Before you start: clear the music rights
“Chillhop” can describe a music style, but it does not mean Chillhop Music’s catalog is cleared for your stream. Its official Creators FAQ explicitly tells creators not to use its music to make their own 24/7 stream. Joining its Creators program does not authorize that format. The program’s terms also restrict eligible uses and exclude material paired only with a still image, visualizer, or track or artist name.
For another catalog, get written permission for the exact use before building the broadcast. Confirm that the license covers:
- Continuous, creator-operated livestreaming on YouTube—not merely personal listening, uploads, or short-form videos.
- Every track you plan to use and the territories where the stream will be available.
- Monetization, if you intend to enable it.
- Archiving the livestream as a VOD, if you plan to keep the replay available.
- Required credits, license duration, and what happens if the permission ends.
- Content ID ownership and channel allowlisting, if the rights holder uses Content ID.
YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content. A match can trigger a warning, a placeholder, interruption, or termination. Even a license may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Archived livestreams may also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast, so check that VODs are covered before enabling an archive.

Check that your channel can livestream
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days to enable live streaming. Confirm access to YouTube’s live-streaming features before spending time configuring the Pi. If the channel is not eligible, resolve that first; a working encoder cannot bypass a channel restriction.
What the Raspberry Pi does
The Pi runs an encoder that combines a digital audio source with a visual and sends the resulting video stream to YouTube. A static or low-motion visual keeps the video portion simple, but it does not establish that a particular Pi board can encode a given resolution indefinitely. No specific board, cooling setup, or 24/7 uptime has been verified here, so choose a current model only after checking its ability to handle your intended encoder workload and test it under realistic conditions.

For a file-based music stream, an audio HAT is optional: it is relevant if you need physical audio input/output or a particular interface, not simply to send digital audio files through an encoder. Plan for reliable power, storage, and network connectivity. The stream depends on the Pi and its connection remaining available, so a wired network may be preferable where practical; stability still needs to be tested at your location.
Prepare the music and visual
- Assemble a rights-cleared playlist. Keep records of the license and permissions for every track. Do not use music from a web radio or a Spotify or Apple Music playlist as a substitute for a license to rebroadcast it.
- Decide whether the stream will be archived. If you want a replay, verify that the music rights cover VODs before enabling the archive in YouTube.
- Choose a simple visual. Prepare a static or low-motion image or scene that you are authorized to use. A visual does not make otherwise unauthorized music safe to stream.
- Keep the source material available to the encoder. Organize the audio files and visual where your chosen encoder can access them, and check that the playlist order and transitions behave as intended.
Configure the YouTube stream and encoder
In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup, create or select the stream, and use its stream URL and stream key in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. Do not publish it, include it in a public playlist or screenshot, or paste it into an untrusted service. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the encoder.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates include these 30 fps settings:
| Output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | YouTube encoder guidance; recommendation, not a Raspberry Pi performance test or stability guarantee. |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | YouTube encoder guidance; recommendation, not a Raspberry Pi performance test or stability guarantee. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | YouTube encoder guidance; recommendation, not a Raspberry Pi performance test or stability guarantee. |
For stereo audio, YouTube’s advanced settings specify 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Use a resolution and bitrate your selected Pi and upload connection can sustain. The bitrate figures are platform recommendations, not evidence that a particular Pi can encode them continuously. YouTube advises checking upload speed; leave practical headroom rather than assuming the connection’s headline speed is continuously available to the stream.

Set the encoder’s audio source to your licensed playlist, its visual source to your chosen scene, and its output destination to YouTube’s server address and stream key. Enable continuous looping or playlist repetition in the encoder, then confirm that the stream reaches YouTube and that the audio and visual are both present. Exact controls vary by encoder and software version; use the current documentation for the encoder and Raspberry Pi OS you have installed. An older Raspberry Pi streaming tutorial may illustrate the architecture, but do not copy dated package installation steps or commands as a current recipe.
Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Run a representative test. Test the actual playlist, visual, selected resolution, bitrate, and network path—not a lighter sample that differs from the planned broadcast.
- Check YouTube’s stream health. In YouTube’s live control interface, watch the health indicator and confirm that the incoming video and audio are stable before treating the stream as ready.
- Listen and watch at the viewer end. Check for silence, clipping, missing visuals, unexpected transitions, and a playlist that stops instead of repeating.
- Verify rights handling. Check for copyright warnings or matches during the test. If the music is licensed and the rights holder uses Content ID, obtain channel allowlisting before relying on a continuous broadcast.
- Test recovery and supervision. Observe how your encoder and network behave after a temporary connection loss or restart. Do not assume the stream will recover without intervention unless you have confirmed that behavior in your setup.
A static visual reduces the amount of video activity, but it does not remove the need to monitor stream health. A Pi can host the encoder; no verified test establishes around-the-clock uptime for a particular board and configuration.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube will not let the channel go live: Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction has applied within the past 90 days.
- The encoder cannot connect: Check that the stream URL and current stream key are entered correctly, the Pi has internet access, and the selected connection protocol is RTMP or RTMPS. If the key may have been exposed, replace it and update the encoder.
- The stream reports poor health or drops: Check YouTube’s health indicator, verify upload speed, and test a lower resolution or bitrate that the Pi and connection can sustain. A bitrate recommendation from YouTube does not guarantee stable performance on your hardware or network.
- There is no sound: Check that the encoder is using the intended digital audio files and that its audio output is set to AAC or MP3 with the selected stereo settings. An audio HAT is not automatically required for file-based audio.
- The playlist stops or repeats incorrectly: Review the encoder’s playlist and loop settings, then test past the point where the playlist should restart before leaving the stream unattended.
- YouTube warns about or interrupts the stream for copyright: Stop and resolve the rights issue. Confirm the license covers the tracks and continuous YouTube use; if Content ID is involved, ask the rights holder to allowlist your channel. A license alone does not ensure uninterrupted streaming.
- A replay receives a claim after the livestream: Review the VOD rights and the rights holder’s claim process. Do not archive future broadcasts unless your permission covers archived streams.
Costs and ongoing responsibilities
The available information does not establish a suitable Pi model, a tested hardware budget, or the cost of licensing music for this use. Your actual setup may require a Pi, reliable storage, power, and network access; the right hardware depends on the encoder workload you choose. An audio HAT is an optional interface, not a required component for file-based digital audio. Confirm music licensing costs and scope directly with the rights holder before committing to a catalog.
Plan to check stream health and copyright status, maintain the Pi and its storage, and renew or revisit music permissions when they change. A 24/7 stream is an ongoing broadcast, not a one-time upload.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a Pi and home connection running, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service that loops uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not broadcast from a camera, and it does not grant music rights: the video and every track still need permission for your stream and any archived VOD.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- Each slot streams your uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no quality tiers.
- It attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
