Debian stable is the best default starting point for a headless 24/7 YouTube music radio server. Ubuntu Server LTS is an equally defensible choice if you already know Ubuntu, your hosting provider supplies a better Ubuntu image, or its package workflow fits your operation. This is a practical recommendation based on support and software availability—not evidence that Debian is inherently more reliable or faster for continuous streaming.
First distinguish a YouTube Live broadcast from internet radio for listeners: Liquidsoap can send a programme to YouTube Live, while a conventional radio setup uses Liquidsoap to generate and encode audio and Icecast to relay it to listeners. The two workflows are not interchangeable.
Which distribution should you choose?
Debian stable: the default for a familiar headless server
For a server whose job is to run audio automation without a desktop, start with Debian stable if you are comfortable maintaining Debian. The Debian release page lists Debian 13 Trixie as current stable and describes a five-year release lifecycle: three years of full support followed by two years of LTS. Check the release page for current details before installing: Debian releases.
Ubuntu Server LTS: a strong alternative
Choose Ubuntu Server LTS when it better matches your experience, hosting image, or support practices. Ubuntu LTS releases arrive every two years and receive five years of standard security maintenance for packages in Main; extended coverage through Ubuntu Pro is separate. See Ubuntu’s release-cycle policy and confirm coverage for the packages and release you intend to use.

There is no source-backed performance ranking between Debian and Ubuntu for this workload. The practical tie-breaker is which system you can patch, diagnose, and restore confidently. Debian 12 Bookworm LTS is supported through June 30, 2028; Debian’s July 2026 notice encourages upgrading to Debian 13 where possible. See the Bookworm support notice.
Decide what “YouTube music radio” means
Continuous YouTube Live broadcast
For an automated audio programme sent to YouTube Live, Liquidsoap can generate and encode the programme and send it over RTMP to YouTube Live. Icecast is not required merely because the destination is YouTube. Consult the Liquidsoap overview for its capabilities and current documentation.

Internet radio for listeners
In the standard internet-radio arrangement, Liquidsoap generates and encodes the stream, then sends it to Icecast; Icecast relays it to listeners. Liquidsoap documents this workflow in its guide to streaming to Icecast and Shoutcast. Icecast describes itself as free server software for streaming multimedia; its project page says Debian and derivatives such as Ubuntu package it as icecast2: Icecast downloads.
How to choose the software and deployment path
- Package source: Icecast documents distribution packages for Debian and Ubuntu. Liquidsoap publishes Debian/Ubuntu builds and also describes packages or images for additional distributions. Check the actual version and codec/build features available for your chosen release against Liquidsoap installation guidance.
- Host type: Distribution packages suit a bare-metal or virtual-machine installation; Liquidsoap also offers container images. The available documentation does not establish one deployment method as universally preferable.
- Operator recovery: Favor the OS and deployment style you can update and recover without guesswork. A 24/7 target makes maintenance and restart procedures part of the design, not a reason to assume one distribution is more reliable.
Do you need OBS or a desktop?
Not necessarily. A basic audio automation chain can run without a desktop environment or OBS. OBS may be relevant if your production requires its particular capture or scene workflow, but it is not an inherent requirement of automated audio streaming. OBS lists OpenGL 3.3 compatibility and X or Wayland among its Linux requirements, and cautions that meeting the system requirements does not guarantee streaming capability; encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity matter. Those are OBS considerations, not sizing guidance for a Liquidsoap audio server. See OBS system requirements.

What the available guidance does—and does not—establish
The official project and distribution documentation establishes that Debian and Ubuntu are supported package paths for the relevant software and provides lifecycle information. It does not establish a universal CPU, RAM, storage, or upload-bandwidth minimum for a continuous stream, nor comparative uptime or performance between distributions. Requirements depend on the chosen encoding, stream quality, number of outputs, media, and audience; size the actual workload rather than borrowing OBS desktop guidance as an audio-server benchmark.
Likewise, the distribution choice alone does not settle music licensing, YouTube account eligibility, or whether particular material may be broadcast. Those depend on the music rights, account, and current platform rules; verify them for the specific stream before going live.
