OBS vs FFmpeg for Streaming an Internet Radio Station to YouTube

OBS offers a visual scene-and-control workflow; FFmpeg suits operators comfortable with a supervised command-line relay. Both must meet YouTube’s current ingest requirements and have rights to rebroadcast the station.

Choose OBS if you want a visual setup with scenes and visible controls for pairing a radio feed with a static image or other visual. Choose FFmpeg if you can configure and supervise a command-line relay and want a scriptable workflow. Neither choice bypasses YouTube’s ingest requirements or gives you rights to rebroadcast a station’s programming.

This is a workflow comparison, not a performance test. The YouTube guidance and OBS documentation cited below establish platform settings and OBS capabilities; they do not establish FFmpeg command parity, comparative resource use, reconnect behavior, or guaranteed 24/7 reliability.

Which should you use?

Need Better fit Why
Graphical setup, visible start/stop controls, or a logo/title card alongside the audio OBS Studio OBS provides a scene-based graphical workflow and documents support for multiple media formats. OBS setup and format documentation is available, though use the current official guide and your installed version when configuring it.
A repeatable command-line relay that you can monitor and maintain FFmpeg It suits operators who prefer scripting, but you must configure the media pipeline and manage process supervision, logs, input URLs, and private stream credentials. Exact command syntax and restart behavior are not established here.
Either tool delivering to YouTube Both are possible in principle YouTube’s current ingest settings govern the stream; they do not require one of these two tools. OBS documentation and YouTube’s encoder guidance describe supported workflows and formats. YouTube encoder settings

For a first setup, OBS is usually the more approachable route. FFmpeg is a reasonable choice when you already know how to build and supervise a command-line process. Do not assume that either one is inherently more stable: reliability depends on the input, configuration, connection, and how the process is monitored.

What a radio stream needs to go live on YouTube

A YouTube live broadcast is a video stream, even when the programme is audio-only. Pair the radio audio with a static image, title card, logo, or another visual. Test the actual programme feed and visual together before going live.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion and advises choosing settings suited to the available upload connection. It detects encoder settings and transcodes a live feed for different viewer formats. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance; settings and ingest details can change.

Practical baseline for ordinary stereo audio

  • Ingest: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended starting point. Use the current stream details shown in your channel’s Live Control Room rather than copying an endpoint from an old guide.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding for RTMP/RTMPS. Its advanced recommendations for stereo are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are platform recommendations, not universal rules for every source or listening context.
  • Video: YouTube’s general encoder table lists H.264, H.265, or AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. A static visual still needs a compatible video stream.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Connection: YouTube recommends testing upload speed and selecting settings the connection can sustain reliably.

Use the platform’s current ingest guidance for the complete video bitrate and configuration requirements; do not infer a bitrate from the audio-only nature of the programme.

When HLS is appropriate

HLS is an option when a workflow needs its specific capabilities, including certain HDR or codec cases. It is not simply an RTMPS URL swap: YouTube’s HLS setup specifies transport and playlist behavior, including TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range support. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP and disables ultra-low latency. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance before choosing it. OBS lists YouTube configurations for RTMPS and HLS in its service configuration repository; YouTube’s requirements remain authoritative.

Set up the broadcast safely

  1. Identify your audio source. Decide whether you are relaying an online radio URL or feeding audio from an analog/line-level source. Hardware such as an audio interface is relevant only if your source or monitoring needs it.
  2. Choose the workflow. Use OBS if you want scenes and GUI controls. Use FFmpeg if you can configure a scripted pipeline and arrange to monitor and supervise it. In either case, include a compatible visual with the audio.
  3. Create or select the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, obtain the current ingest method and stream settings for the event. Keep the stream key private; treat it like a password, and regenerate it if exposed.
  4. Configure the encoder. Follow YouTube’s current guidance for ingest, codec, CBR, keyframes, and audio. For ordinary stereo, its cited audio recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
  5. Run a preflight. Where available, test privately or unlisted. Play representative station audio and verify that both audio and visual reach YouTube and appear healthy. Check the stream-health notices.
  6. Monitor the live event. Keep an eye on YouTube’s health messages during the broadcast; a successful initial connection does not prove that the source or network will remain available.
  7. Confirm permissions before launch. Verify that the station’s rights cover retransmission on YouTube, the relevant territory, and any archive you plan to leave online. Check whether the rights holder needs to allowlist your channel for Content ID.

OBS-specific considerations

OBS’s graphical scene model is useful when the radio audio needs a logo, title card, visualizer, or another scene-based presentation. Its format guide documents H.264 as the default video codec, FLV as an RTMP container with limitations on codecs and audio tracks, MPEG-TS for HLS, and MKV support for OBS audio/video encoder combinations. Those format notes are context, not a substitute for YouTube’s current ingestion requirements. Consult the OBS knowledge base and verify the settings shown by your installed version.

  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.

OBS makes configuration visible to an operator, but a GUI does not itself guarantee unattended recovery. If you need long-running operation, decide who will watch for input failures, health warnings, and interruptions.

FFmpeg-specific considerations

FFmpeg can suit a scripted relay when you are comfortable configuring a command-line media pipeline. Plan how the process will obtain the radio feed, produce the visual video stream, encode or pass through compatible audio, deliver to YouTube’s current ingest settings, and keep credentials private.

  • Get the best out of your Microphones - M-Track Duo’s transparent Crystal Preamps guarantee optimal sound from all your microphones including condenser mics

A script alone does not establish reliable 24/7 operation. A continuous deployment also needs process supervision, useful logs, monitoring of the input and output, and a tested response to failures. The exact FFmpeg command depends on the radio source, desired visual, codecs, and ingest method; no one command can be responsibly prescribed without those details.

YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream and prompt a warning to stop; if the content continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. Copyright or Community Guidelines strikes can also end a live broadcast. Even licensed third-party content may be interrupted if your channel is not on the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube does not receive the broadcast Event settings, stream key, ingest method, or encoder configuration Recheck the current Live Control Room details, confirm the selected RTMPS or HLS workflow, and keep the key private. Consult YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
Audio arrives but the picture is missing or invalid The stream needs a compatible video component Ensure the scene or media pipeline supplies a static image or other valid video alongside the audio.
Audio drops, stutters, or becomes unreliable Radio source availability, connection, or settings that exceed the upload connection Test the source and upload connection with representative material, choose sustainable settings, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages.
A healthy-looking setup is interrupted after going live Third-party content matching, permissions, or channel allowlisting Resolve the rights and Content ID allowlist requirements with the station or rights holder before relaunching.
The stream runs, but unattended recovery is uncertain Process and input supervision Do not assume OBS or FFmpeg will recover from every failure automatically. Test the failure modes you care about and establish monitoring and a recovery procedure for your deployment.
HLS has more latency than expected HLS delivery behavior Account for YouTube’s higher HLS latency compared with RTMP. Use HLS only when its features are needed and follow its segment and playlist requirements.
