Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If OBS loses its connection but remains open, enable OBS’s output auto-reconnect. If the OBS application itself crashes or exits, auto-reconnect cannot relaunch it: configure an external process supervisor to restart OBS with the --startstreaming launch parameter, then test the full path and verify YouTube’s broadcast settings.
First identify what failed
“Crash” can mean two different things. OBS may still be running after its stream connection drops, or the OBS process may have exited. The recovery method depends on which happened.
| Recovery path | Use it when | What it does | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Automatically Reconnect | The output connection drops while OBS remains running | Retries the output connection using OBS’s retry settings | It does not relaunch OBS after the process crashes. OBS Studio Output API reference |
| External process supervision plus an OBS launch parameter | OBS exits or crashes | Detects the exited process and launches OBS again; --startstreaming requests streaming at startup |
It cannot fix the cause of the crash or guarantee YouTube accepts the stream. OBS Project launch parameters |
Reconnect OBS after a dropped connection
When OBS is still open, use its output auto-reconnect setting. The exact menu placement can vary by release, so check the output or streaming settings in your installed version for the label Automatically Reconnect.
- Open the relevant OBS output or streaming settings and enable Automatically Reconnect.
- Choose a retry delay and maximum retry count suitable for your connection and stream.
- Save the settings and test by briefly interrupting the connection while leaving OBS open.
OBS’s output API describes a retry count and retry interval; a retry count of zero disables reconnect, and the retry time doubles after each attempt. See the OBS output API reference for the documented behavior.

Relaunch OBS after the process crashes
A process supervisor is a separate operating-system or monitoring service that watches for OBS to exit and launches it again. OBS documents launch parameters, including --startstreaming, but does not prescribe one watchdog product or a universal setup for every operating system. OBS Project’s launch-parameter documentation is dated May 30, 2021.
Make the relaunch reproducible
- Configure the supervisor to launch OBS with
--startstreamingso it requests streaming when it starts. - If the relaunch must use a particular OBS profile or scene collection, use the documented
--profileand--collectionparameters as appropriate. - On Windows, set the automated launch’s working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe, as OBS’s launch guidance specifies. - Run the supervisor in the same expected user and desktop-session context as the OBS setup, and verify that the expected scene and sources load. A process launched outside that context may not behave like a manually opened OBS session.
Use a controlled restart policy
Set a restart delay and a retry limit or alerting policy rather than allowing rapid, unlimited relaunches. If OBS repeatedly crashes for the same reason, immediate restarts can create a loop without restoring the stream. Exact supervisor settings depend on the operating system and the service you choose.

Check YouTube’s stream settings
In YouTube Live, review the stream key and the Auto-start and Auto-stop options for the specific stream. YouTube documents these as broadcast settings; they influence stream lifecycle but do not restart a crashed OBS process. Reusing stream settings also copies the Auto-start and Auto-stop selections, so check them when you reuse a setup. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
The result after OBS reconnects or restarts depends on the broadcast configuration. The official guidance does not establish one universal hold-open timeout or guarantee that every broadcast remains resumable after every crash, power loss, or long outage. Confirm the behavior with your own stream configuration rather than relying on a presumed timeout.

Test the complete recovery chain
- Before an unattended stream, run a controlled test using the same OBS profile, scene collection, account context, launch parameters, and YouTube broadcast settings intended for the real loop.
- Test a connection interruption with OBS left open to confirm output auto-reconnect.
- Separately test a process exit to confirm the supervisor detects it, relaunches OBS, loads the expected scene and source, and requests streaming.
- Check YouTube’s incoming stream health and broadcast status. Use representative audio and motion, and monitor stream health during the test.
YouTube advises choosing quality that is reliable for the available connection, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health during the event. Its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing settings for a few minutes. OBS Project Quick Start Guide (dated August 25, 2021).
What automation cannot recover
- Computer or power outage: A supervisor on the same machine cannot restart OBS while that machine is off.
- Network failure: Relaunching OBS does not restore an unavailable internet connection.
- Invalid or changed stream key: Update the encoder’s stream settings in YouTube and OBS, then test again.
- Broken media source or repeated crash: Fix the source or underlying crash before relying on automatic relaunch.
- YouTube broadcast rejection or lifecycle mismatch: Check the broadcast’s status and settings; launching OBS does not guarantee YouTube will accept input or go live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube loop rather than keeping a local OBS setup alive, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
