What Is Dynamic Range in Video? A Simple Guide

Dynamic range is the span from dark to bright detail in video. Learn how camera capture range differs from a display’s range, and how stops, Log, HDR, and SDR fit together.

Dynamic range in video is the span between the darkest and brightest image information that retains useful detail. It can describe what a camera captures or what a screen can display; those are different ranges. A camera may record more tonal information than an SDR screen can show at once, so the finished video needs to be mapped to its intended display.

What dynamic range means in a video

Imagine filming a dim room with a bright window. The scene contains deep shadows and very bright areas. Dynamic range describes the brightness span between those extremes in which detail remains visible. If the window clips to featureless white or the shadows collapse into noise, some of the scene’s tonal information is no longer usable.

In video, the phrase can refer to two stages:

  • Capture range: the brightness information the camera sensor and recording pipeline preserve before highlights clip or shadows become too noisy.
  • Display range: the brightness and contrast a monitor or television can reproduce.

The captured range and display range need not match. A camera can record more information than a particular screen can reproduce at once. The video then needs an appropriate display transform or grade for its target.

What a stop tells you

A stop is a step in exposure: one stop more means twice as much light, and one stop less means half as much. Dynamic range is often expressed as a number of stops, but a stop count is meaningful only with its measurement context. Camera model, recording mode, test method, and the threshold for acceptable shadow noise can all affect a published figure.

For example, ARRI’s HDR FAQ gives the ALEXA 35 a 17-stop figure measured with a Xyla chart and ARRI Analysis method. The same FAQ gives 14+ stops for its ALEV3 sensor using the ARRI Dynamic Range Test Chart. These are manufacturer claims using different methods, not directly comparable results from one independent test. Blackmagic Design lists 13 stops for the Pocket Cinema Camera family; that is also a vendor specification, not a cross-brand benchmark.

For that reason, there is no single stop count that every video camera should reach, and a higher published number alone does not establish which camera will suit a particular shoot. Check what camera, recording mode, chart, and measurement method the claim describes.

Camera range and screen range are not the same

Published descriptions of SDR display range are not perfectly uniform. ARRI uses about eight stops as an SDR-monitor example. Apple’s Motion guide describes SDR as roughly 6 to 10 stops, with maximum luminance around 100 nits. Treat these as source-specific descriptions rather than one exact universal limit.

The practical point is that footage with broad capture latitude may need its contrast and brightness mapped for the delivery screen. A wider capture range gives more room to make choices in grading; it does not mean every screen will show every captured highlight and shadow detail simultaneously.

Dynamic range, HDR, SDR, and color gamut

HDR and SDR describe the delivery and viewing path

HDR means High Dynamic Range; SDR means Standard Dynamic Range. In practice, HDR is not just a camera setting. The footage must be encoded, delivered, and played through a compatible signal and display path. HDR workflows commonly use PQ or HLG transfer functions. YouTube’s HDR guidance specifies Rec. 2020 with PQ or HLG for HDR grading, and says viewers on non-HDR devices see an SDR version.

That fallback does not mean the HDR master automatically looks identical on every screen. The platform, playback device, display capability, and tone mapping affect the result. Sony also cautions that HDR footage in a low-range scene can appear darker than SDR on a particular device, so “HDR always looks brighter” is too simple.

Rec. 2020 is not another name for dynamic range

Rec. 2020, also called BT.2020, describes color primaries and gamut in the cited HDR workflow. PQ and HLG are transfer functions. They relate to how brightness values are represented, but “more colors,” a wider gamut, and greater dynamic range are not interchangeable claims.

Log is an encoding choice, not an HDR guarantee

Log recording encodes a broad range of captured tonal values into a flatter-looking image intended for later processing. ARRI describes Log C as scene-based encoding and explains that exposure in stops maps to equal signal increments across a wide range. As ARRI puts it, “Each stop of exposure increases the signal by the same amount.”

Log can help preserve and work with captured values, but it does not give a sensor more capture range and does not, by itself, make the final video HDR. Log footage needs a transform or tone mapping for its intended target, whether SDR, HDR, or projection. An SDR finish may compress or remap the available range; Adobe documents tone mapping HLG or PQ HDR into the narrower Rec. 709 space.

How to judge whether detail is being preserved

Inspect the image as well as the signal

For a difficult contrast scene, look for whether important highlight texture and shadow detail survive capture. A bright window can exceed the camera’s usable range in a dark room. More latitude can give you more grading room, but it cannot restore detail that has already clipped or disappeared into noise. ARRI notes that clipped highlights can be especially distracting in HDR because a large area may lack detail.

Use a waveform as a guide

A waveform shows luma, or brightness, levels in the video signal and where those levels occur across the picture. Blackmagic Design describes its waveform display as showing “the luma (brightness) levels of your video signal.” This can help you see where highlights and shadows sit in the signal, but it does not decide the right artistic exposure or guarantee that detail is usable. Judge the image too.

How to read a camera’s stop-count claim

  • Identify the exact camera model and sensor generation.
  • Check the recording mode and any stated settings or restrictions.
  • Look for the chart and analysis method used to measure the figure.
  • Check how the manufacturer defines the limit, including the shadow-noise threshold and whether it is total range or latitude around middle gray.
  • Compare figures cautiously: claims measured with different methods are not a reliable camera ranking.

Manufacturer specifications are useful starting points, but they are not a substitute for a comparable test or for judging footage in the conditions you plan to shoot.

A separate question: keeping a YouTube video live

Dynamic range concerns image brightness and detail; it does not determine whether a YouTube stream stays online. For a separate 24/7 channel use case, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so a computer does not have to stay on. To try it, visit StreamNeo registration.

Sources and scope

The camera and display examples above are attributed to ARRI, Apple, and Blackmagic Design; workflow descriptions are attributed to ARRI, Adobe, YouTube Help, and Sony support. These published figures and guidance illustrate the concepts, but they do not establish an independent, comparable benchmark across cameras.
