A local YouTube study-music stream can recover after a power outage, but only if every link in the recovery chain works: the UPS powers the equipment long enough, the computer starts when electricity returns, OBS launches and reconnects, the network reaches YouTube, and the broadcast is still available or is started again. A UPS and OBS reconnect setting help with different parts of that chain; neither guarantees an uninterrupted stream by itself.
What has to recover after an outage
Think of recovery as several separate stages rather than one automatic restart. A failure at any stage can leave the channel offline even after power returns.
- Power: The UPS bridges the outage only while its battery has enough charge for the connected load.
- Computer: When utility power returns, the UPS may come back online, but the computer may remain off unless its firmware is configured to power it on after AC restoration.
- Encoder: The operating system must start, OBS must open, and OBS must connect to YouTube using the intended stream settings and key.
- Network and ingest: The modem, router, local network, ISP path, and YouTube ingest connection must all be working.
- Broadcast: YouTube must still be receiving the feed, or you must start the appropriate broadcast again if the previous one ended.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key; treat the key like a password because it authorizes the encoder to send the stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection workflow. A stream under 12 hours is automatically archived according to that help page, but archiving is not outage recovery and does not guarantee that an interrupted broadcast resumes.
Prepare the local setup before an outage
1. Put essential equipment on battery-backed UPS outlets
Connect the streaming computer and the modem/router equipment needed for the stream to UPS outlets that provide battery backup, not outlets that provide surge protection only. Check the UPS load rating and runtime guidance against the actual equipment. Choose capacity based on measured or estimated load and the bridge time you need; there is no universally appropriate UPS size without those details.

Runtime varies with load and battery condition. APC’s example gaming setups list 13 minutes for a gaming PC with one monitor and 27 minutes for a gaming laptop with one monitor; APC says a router/modem is included by default in those example configurations. These are examples, not runtime estimates for another setup. Battery age, recharge state, temperature, load, and prior discharges can change available runtime. See APC’s UPS runtime examples.
2. Set the computer to start when power returns
In the computer’s BIOS or UEFI firmware, look for an option described along the lines of “restore on AC power loss,” “AC back,” or “power on after power failure.” The exact label varies by computer or motherboard. Enable the behavior that suits an unattended stream, then save the setting. APC explains that its UPS can restart when utility power returns while the attached computer may not start unless its BIOS is configured to power on when power is available: APC’s explanation of restart after utility power returns.
This matters most when an outage lasts long enough to drain the UPS. The UPS coming back online does not itself prove that the computer has restarted.

3. Arrange for the operating system and OBS to launch
Configure the computer’s normal boot and sign-in behavior so the streaming session can resume without someone being present. Set up OBS to open after startup using your operating system’s available startup options, and make sure the intended scene, media source or playlist, YouTube service/server, and stream key are saved. The stream key is a credential: do not share it publicly or leave it exposed in screenshots.

4. Enable OBS automatic reconnect, but know its limits
OBS automatic reconnect can help when a stream connection drops briefly. It does not restore electrical power, turn on a powered-off computer, open OBS after a restart, or guarantee that the same YouTube broadcast remains available. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide distinguishes connection problems from other parts of the setup.
5. Choose YouTube’s stream controls deliberately
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls allow the encoder to start or stop a configured stream when those controls are enabled. They should not be treated as a promise to recover a stream after a complete power loss or to extend a broadcast session. Review the settings in YouTube’s live stream settings help and decide how they fit your scheduled or ongoing stream workflow.

6. Test the complete chain safely
- Check that the UPS indicates normal operation and that the equipment is connected to battery-backed outlets.
- Confirm the computer’s AC-restoration setting and that the operating system can reach the desktop or intended unattended state.
- Confirm OBS starts with the intended scene and media, connects using the correct stream key, and begins sending data.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and verify that YouTube shows an incoming feed and a usable preview.
- Only perform a controlled power interruption if it is safe for the equipment and data. Observe each stage rather than assuming that a successful computer boot means the broadcast is back.
What to do when power returns
- Check the UPS. Confirm it is back on utility power and is not overloaded or reporting a battery fault. If its battery was substantially discharged, allow it to recharge; available runtime may be reduced until it has recovered. APC notes that recent outages and batteries near end of life can contribute to inadequate runtime.
- Confirm the computer booted. If it did not, check its power state and the firmware option for power-on after AC restoration. Do not infer that the computer restarted just because the UPS did.
- Check OBS and the source. Make sure OBS is open, the correct scene or playlist is active, and the encoder is sending data with the intended YouTube settings and stream key.
- Verify YouTube’s side. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, inspect the incoming preview and stream health. Also check the public watch page. If the old broadcast has ended, use the channel’s configured or scheduled stream workflow to start the appropriate broadcast and verify it before relying on it.
- Investigate the network if the equipment is running but the feed is not stable. Check modem/router status, cables, network cards, and other hardware between the computer and internet. OBS also identifies security software and ISP-side changes or congestion as possible causes. If its network troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, OBS recommends contacting the ISP. See the OBS troubleshooting guide.
Match the backup to the failure you are trying to prevent
- Short power interruption: A UPS may bridge it if the actual load and battery condition leave enough runtime.
- Long outage: A UPS eventually runs out of battery. Computer firmware, operating-system startup, OBS launch, and YouTube broadcast recovery still need to work when utility power returns.
- Internet outage while power stays on: OBS reconnect and a working network path matter. A backup internet connection can help only if the router or network actually switches to it; changing the network path alone does not restart the encoder or guarantee that YouTube resumes the session.
- Power failure at the streaming location: A hosted cloud workflow can reduce reliance on the creator’s computer and home power. Check the provider’s exact YouTube workflow and documented recovery behavior rather than assuming every service handles an outage the same way.
For a UPS, compare actual watt load with the UPS watt/VA rating, runtime at that load, which outlets have battery backup, battery age and replaceability, and any USB/software support needed for graceful shutdown. For internet resilience, assess the backup ISP and router failover separately from the encoder’s broadcast recovery. No particular failover configuration is established here as guaranteeing YouTube continuity.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Copyright and study-music channel checks
Power recovery does not resolve rights or monetization issues. Before leaving a study-music stream unattended, make sure you have the rights or licenses needed for the music, artwork, and any other material in the playlist. A track being available online, labeled “copyright free,” or previously used without a claim is not by itself proof that your use is authorized. Review the relevant YouTube terms and rights for each source, and keep records of licenses or permissions. Repeated or minimally transformed material can also raise separate reused-content questions; assess the channel against YouTube’s current policies rather than assuming that a 24/7 loop is automatically eligible for monetization.
For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist. You can also estimate transfer time with the upload-time calculator and compare ongoing local and cloud costs with the cloud vs PC cost calculator.
