Run your already-working FFmpeg command as a foreground systemd service, then set a restart policy such as Restart=on-failure and a deliberate delay with RestartSec=. systemd can start FFmpeg again after the process exits; it cannot by itself detect every stalled output, make a finite input loop, or guarantee that a streaming platform accepts the stream.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
systemd supervises the lifetime of the FFmpeg process. With Restart=on-failure, systemd attempts another start when the service fails; RestartSec= sets the delay before that attempt. A clean, intentional exit does not necessarily trigger a restart under this policy. Choose a different restart mode only if its behavior matches how you want the stream to behave, and check the systemd version and start-limit policy on your VPS. See the systemd service reference; the linked documentation follows a moving project branch, so local behavior may depend on your installed version.
- FFmpeg exits: systemd can start a new process according to the configured restart policy.
- A supported network interruption occurs while FFmpeg is still running: FFmpeg may handle it internally with protocol-specific options.
- FFmpeg remains alive but output is stalled: a process-exit restart policy alone may not notice. You would need a carefully designed health check or watchdog based on a defined test of stream health.
- The input reaches EOF: systemd does not make a finite media file repeat. The FFmpeg command needs an appropriate looping strategy.
These are separate recovery layers, not guarantees of uninterrupted playback. A restarted process may begin its input again rather than resume meaningfully, and the publishing endpoint must still accept the connection.
Validate the FFmpeg command before creating the service
First make the exact command work interactively. The input, loop behavior, output protocol, codecs, endpoint, and credentials are not specified here, so there is no single safe command line for every sleep-sounds stream. Use the FFmpeg command-line documentation for command syntax, and verify options against the protocols and FFmpeg build actually in use.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
systemd does not automatically run ExecStart= through a shell. Do not assume shell features such as pipes, redirection, wildcard expansion, or environment-variable expansion will work there. If shell logic is genuinely necessary, put it in a reviewed executable script and invoke that script explicitly.
Check the input and destination
- Confirm the media file exists and the intended service account can read it.
- Check that the destination URL, stream credentials, and required network access are valid. Keep live credentials protected; do not publish them in a unit file readable by other users.
- Decide what should happen at the end of the input. A finite local file needs an FFmpeg looping approach if it is meant to repeat indefinitely.
- Run the command under conditions close to the eventual service: correct working directory, account, paths, and required environment. A command that works in an interactive shell can fail as a restricted service.
Create a systemd unit
This is an adaptable outline, not a tested drop-in. Replace the FFmpeg path, arguments, user, and working directory with values validated for your VPS. Create a system-level unit such as /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service:

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg sleep sounds stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/sleep-stream
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg <your validated FFmpeg arguments>
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
The example uses RestartSec=5s as a sample delay, not a universal setting. A short delay can produce frequent attempts and noisy logs if the command has a persistent error. Consider the unit’s start limits and choose a delay appropriate to the failure and endpoint. Wants= and After=network-online.target express a startup dependency and ordering; check whether the VPS distribution enables a network-online wait service and whether it is meaningful in that environment.
Use a dedicated, minimally privileged service account where practical. Ensure it can read the media and access only the state or other paths it needs. Choose a protected credential mechanism suited to your distribution rather than placing a live key in a broadly readable unit.

Enable the service and inspect its logs
After saving the unit, reload systemd’s configuration, enable the service for boot, start it, and check its state. Replace the example unit name if yours differs:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service -f
systemctl status shows the current state and recent messages. The final command follows new journal entries for the unit. For this boot’s service history without following live output, use:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service -b
journalctl displays entries stored by systemd’s journal services; consult the journalctl manual for systemd 255 for that version’s options. If the journal shows no FFmpeg output, check the service’s output settings, whether FFmpeg writes diagnostics to standard output or error, and the VPS distribution’s journal configuration and retention.
Use FFmpeg reconnect options only for the relevant protocol
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation lists controls including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, and reconnect_streamed, along with error-code and retry-limit options. These are protocol-level controls, not universal switches for every input and output.

For example, the documentation describes reconnect as reconnecting after disconnection before EOF is reached. It describes reconnect_at_eof as treating EOF like an error, which can be useful for live or endless streams, and reconnect_on_network_error as covering TCP/TLS errors during connection. These descriptions do not mean the options apply to every publishing protocol or solve every server-side disconnect. Confirm the option’s support and meaning for the actual protocol, input, output, and installed FFmpeg build before adding it.
In particular, do not copy HTTP input reconnect options onto an RTMP output without verifying applicability. If FFmpeg exits, systemd’s policy may launch it again; if FFmpeg stays alive during a failure, the systemd process restart policy may do nothing.
Troubleshoot by finding the failure before changing the policy
- Check state and exit details: run
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-sleep-stream.serviceand note whether the unit is active, failed, or repeatedly starting. - Read this boot’s logs: run
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service -b, or add-fto watch new entries. Look for authentication failures, missing input, invalid arguments, unsupported codecs or protocols, endpoint rejection, and resource problems. - Verify execution context: check the absolute FFmpeg path and argument boundaries in
ExecStart. Run the validated command as the configured service user, with the same working directory and environment constraints. - Check access and connectivity: confirm the input exists and is readable, required paths are accessible, credentials are current and protected, and outbound network access is allowed.
- Confirm recovery at both layers: use the journal to see whether systemd actually restarted FFmpeg, then separately verify that the destination recognizes and plays the stream.
- If FFmpeg stays active while output stalls: identify a meaningful health signal before adding a watchdog or health-check restart. Restarting solely on process exit cannot detect a process that is alive but no longer delivering usable output.
Do not shorten the restart delay or increase retry frequency to hide a bad command, invalid credential, or rejected endpoint. Repeated starts do not fix the underlying error and can make logs harder to diagnose.
