How to Make a YouTube Live Replay Available While a Prerecorded Stream Is Still Running

A completed YouTube Live replay is available only after the stream ends. Turn on DVR to let late viewers rewind within the live broadcast.

You can’t publish a completed YouTube Live replay as a separate archive while that same stream is still running. To help late-arriving viewers catch up, turn on live DVR: they can pause and rewind within the broadcast, potentially back to its start. YouTube makes the stream archive available only after the broadcast ends, and it does not specify an exact processing time.

Replay and DVR are different

DVR is a control for the broadcast that is live now. It lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume within that stream; it does not create a separate, completed replay. A replay or archive is the recording associated with the broadcast after it ends. YouTube’s DVR guidance explains the live playback controls, while its archive guidance covers recordings after a stream.

For a prerecorded program being transmitted as a live stream, the practical solution is the same: enable DVR so viewers who arrive late can seek backward in the current broadcast. They cannot rewind to before the live stream began.

Turn on DVR in YouTube Studio

Before the stream starts

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live.
  2. Choose the stream, or open the Manage tab and select it.
  3. Open Stream settings, then expand Additional settings.
  4. Enable DVR.

YouTube may change Studio labels, so the exact wording or location can vary. Check the stream settings before going live and confirm DVR is enabled.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the stream is already live

You can switch DVR on or off while broadcasting. The change applies to viewers who start playing after you change the setting; people already watching may not get the updated behavior. If you switch it on midstream, tell late-arriving viewers to reload or start playback again if they still cannot seek backward.

What viewers can rewind—and the limits

  • Viewers can pause, rewind, and resume within the live broadcast, potentially back to its beginning.
  • DVR does not let them go to a point before the broadcast started.
  • Very long streams may have limited or unavailable DVR, particularly beyond 12 hours. Availability can also depend on the playback device.

If DVR is disabled, viewers cannot seek back during the live broadcast, though YouTube says they can still watch a recording once it becomes available.

Make the completed archive available after the stream

When the prerecorded program is finished, stop the live stream. Then open YouTube Studio’s Live tab to find the archive and manage its visibility. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams under 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. The platform does not promise an exact archive processing delay, so do not expect the replay to appear immediately.

For a walkthrough of archive behavior, see YouTube’s “Archive live streams” help page. YouTube also notes that a channel may post a replay or highlights after a live stream ends in its live streams overview.

Keep a separate recording as a backup

YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup and checking that the local file is growing during the stream. A local copy protects the recording if an archive is missing or delayed; it does not make YouTube publish the replay while the broadcast is still live. YouTube’s live streaming tips include advice on monitoring a local recording.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your prerecorded content is intended to loop on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer or home internet connection staying on. StreamNeo cannot publish a separate completed replay while the stream is live; viewers still use YouTube DVR to rewind, and the archive is still subject to YouTube’s rules.
