To use a YouTube stream key for a continuous lofi broadcast, create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key into an encoder, then start the encoder and check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. The key only authorizes the feed: your encoder or streaming service must keep sending audio and video for the broadcast to stay live.
What a YouTube stream key does
A stream key is a credential that lets an encoder send audio and video to YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep yours private; anyone with access may be able to send a feed to your channel. A key does not start or sustain a broadcast on its own.
YouTube treats the incoming feed and the viewer-facing broadcast as separate objects: the stream carries the audio and video, while the broadcast is the live video or event viewers watch. This distinction matters for API-based setups, which can bind a second broadcast to an ongoing stream, but an ordinary manual lofi setup does not require API use. Prepare your channel and lofi material
Check live-stream access before launch
- Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, according to YouTube’s current eligibility guidance.
- First-time activation of live streaming may take up to 24 hours. Enable it well before the broadcast you intend to run.
- Decide whether the broadcast should be public, unlisted, or private, and prepare its title and other metadata before starting.

Confirm rights to every element
Use music, artwork, animation, and other media that you own or have permission to stream. A lofi aesthetic or a track being available online does not establish that you have the necessary rights. Check YouTube’s current copyright policies and the terms that apply to each piece of content before going live; no general setup step can determine whether a particular track or visual is cleared.
Find or create the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go Live.
- Choose the Stream tab. Create a stream or select an existing setup. YouTube may load previous settings, including an existing key.
- Review the broadcast’s privacy and metadata. Copy the displayed Stream URL and Stream key.
- If you want a reusable credential across stream setups, create a custom key in the stream settings. Restrict access to it as you would a password.
YouTube’s live-stream settings guide covers stream setup, custom keys, and resetting a key. Only a channel owner or manager can reset one. If a key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in your encoder before the next transmission.

Enter the key in OBS or another encoder
- Open your encoder’s streaming or broadcast settings. If it offers YouTube as a destination, select it and follow its sign-in or connection flow.
- If the encoder asks for server details, paste YouTube’s Stream URL into its server or RTMP server field.
- Paste the Stream key into the encoder’s stream-key field. Check for leading or trailing spaces, and do not show the key in screenshots or public streams.
- Choose your video and audio output settings, then start streaming from the encoder.
- Return to Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview and status. For a scheduled broadcast, click Go live when YouTube prompts you.
YouTube’s documented workflow is to create or select a stream, connect the encoder, and verify the preview; starting the encoder may not by itself activate a scheduled viewer-facing broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
Set a reliable lofi stream output
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the feed in transit to YouTube. For RTMP/RTMPS, the listed video codec options include H.264, H.265, and AV1; listed audio options include AAC or MP3. Use the codec and settings your encoder and workflow support rather than assuming every combination is available in every encoder.

- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: set a 2-second interval; YouTube says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate: choose the value in YouTube’s current settings guidance for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. There is no single correct bitrate for every lofi broadcast.
- Resolution and frame rate: automatic detection is the recommended starting point. If you set manual values with a custom key, make sure they match the encoder output and the source you intend to stream.
- Audio: check that the encoder is sending the intended audio device or track and that playback is audible in the preview.
For the current bitrate recommendations and supported combinations, consult YouTube’s encoder settings, which can change over time.
Keep a lofi broadcast running continuously
Choose who keeps the feed alive
The continuous part is the encoder or streaming service, not the key. With a software encoder on a computer, the computer, encoder process, power, and internet connection must remain available. A standalone hardware encoder is another option, but buying one is not required. A cloud service can keep prerecorded video streaming without relying on a home computer. YouTube’s encoder directory and guide includes services that support continuous streaming of prerecorded video; confirm current compatibility and operating details with any service you consider.

Monitor instead of assuming the feed is healthy
Check Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages after starting and while the broadcast runs. YouTube recommends checking the encoder’s audio and video output as well. If viewers on separate connections report the same problem, investigate the encoder first; if its output appears healthy, check outbound network performance. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide also recommends updating encoder software, checking CPU load, and reviewing local recordings where available.

End and archive deliberately
To stop a scheduled broadcast, use End Stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder feed. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not promise automatic archiving for longer continuous streams, so make a separate recording or verify YouTube’s current behavior if you need an archive.

Why is my YouTube stream key not working?
- Encoder cannot connect: verify that the Stream URL and key were copied from the same YouTube stream and pasted into the correct fields. If the encoder reports a startup issue, YouTube recommends obtaining a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder.
- The preview never appears: confirm the encoder is actually sending, check its output and internet connection, and look for stream-health messages in Live Control Room.
- The preview works but viewers cannot see the broadcast: for a scheduled stream, check whether YouTube is waiting for you to click Go live. Also verify the broadcast’s privacy setting.
- The stream starts, then drops: inspect encoder stability, CPU load, and outbound network performance. Update the encoder and test the feed before relying on it unattended.
- The stream has no audio or video: confirm the intended audio track and video source are enabled in the encoder, then check the actual preview rather than relying only on the encoder’s local interface.
- The key may have been exposed: reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in every encoder or service that uses it.
