There is no single reliable monthly rupee cost: it depends on the PC’s measured power draw during your actual stream, inverter losses and operating mode, and your state, DISCOM, tariff category and bill. Measure the system’s AC input, calculate its monthly units, then apply your current bill’s tariff and other charges.
Calculate the PC’s monthly electricity use
Use the average AC input power in watts, not the power supply’s maximum rating:
Monthly energy (kWh or units) = average AC input watts × hours per day × days ÷ 1,000
For a 24/7 stream over a 30-day month, this becomes average watts × 0.72 = monthly kWh. For example, 100 W continuously uses 72 kWh (units) in 30 days. That is arithmetic, not a measured result for any particular PC.

For a different month length, use the full formula. If the stream runs fewer than 24 hours a day, enter its actual daily hours.
Measure the real streaming workload
Measure at the AC input
A PC power supply’s wattage rating describes its capacity, not its typical consumption. Measure the complete PC at the wall while it is doing the work you intend to leave running: encoding or playing the stream, using your chosen settings, and handling any other software or peripherals that will remain on. A brief idle reading may not represent a workload that varies over time. Where possible, use a true-power meter that records accumulated kWh over a representative period.

ENERGY STAR’s computer measurement procedure calls for an approved true-power meter at the AC source and says to connect the computer directly to the measurement outlet, without a UPS between the meter and computer. Include inverter overhead correctly
To include inverter losses in the grid-energy estimate, measure at the inverter’s AC input while the PC runs through it. Alternatively, measure the PC’s output load and apply the inverter’s efficiency at that particular load. Schneider Electric defines UPS efficiency as output electrical power divided by input electrical power; the difference is lost as heat. Efficiency varies with load, so a nameplate maximum may not describe the efficiency at your PC’s actual draw. Schneider Electric technical FAQ

When mains power is available, an inverter may pass power through while also drawing standby or charging power; the amount depends on its model and mode. During an outage, the battery supplies energy, and recharging later also has losses. There is no sound universal percentage to add for an unspecified inverter. Measure the system input or use the manufacturer’s efficiency information for the relevant load and operating mode.
Convert units into an India-specific bill estimate
Multiply the PC’s additional monthly units by the applicable energy-charge rates, accounting for how the added consumption affects your tariff slabs. Do not treat that result as the whole bill: fixed charges, duty or tax, fuel or power-purchase adjustments, and applicable subsidies can change the amount payable.

India has no single household electricity rate. The Ministry of Power says retail tariffs are determined by the appropriate Electricity Regulatory Commissions, and state governments may provide subsidies to consumer classes. The Central Electricity Authority’s March 2026 tariff compilation likewise records schedules by state and category. Check your latest bill and the current tariff order for your state, DISCOM and consumer category rather than assuming a national per-unit rate. The schedule separately lists monthly fixed charges per kW and notes that state subsidies may apply. Under the example’s telescopic method, a 150-unit bill charges the first 100 units at the first slab rate and only the remaining 50 at the next rate. Your own applicable schedule may differ. Estimate the bill impact, not just the energy charge
- Find your measured or estimated additional monthly units from the streaming setup.
- Use your current bill to identify the consumer category, tariff structure, fixed charges, adjustments, duties and subsidy, if applicable.
- Calculate the bill under the existing schedule, then recalculate it with the PC’s additional units. Check whether those units move household consumption into a higher slab.
- Compare the two totals. This gives a more useful estimate of the PC’s effect than multiplying every unit by one assumed rate.
Keep the units distinct: watts measure instantaneous power, kWh (called units on Indian bills) measure energy over time, and rupees are the resulting charges. A power meter can help establish the most important personalized input; Delta Electronics India describes power meters as instruments for electrical power and energy parameters.
