A YouTube radio stream is not automatically required to stop when it reaches 12 hours. YouTube’s 12-hour guidance concerns whether a stream is saved as an archive and whether viewers can rewind it—not a general live-broadcast cutoff. If the live player actually goes offline, check the encoder and outbound connection for stream-specific errors before blaming YouTube or your internet provider.
First identify what stopped
“The stream stopped” can describe three different problems. Check the live player and the broadcast status around the reported time, then compare them with the encoder’s status and any saved replay.
- Live transmission: The player went offline and viewers could no longer watch live. Investigate the encoder, the incoming stream, and the outbound connection.
- Archive: The live broadcast ended, but no replay appeared. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. This does not establish that YouTube ended the live transmission at 12 hours. YouTube’s archive guidance recommends keeping a local recording as a backup.
- DVR rewind: Viewers could still watch live but could not seek back as expected. DVR is a viewer feature; YouTube says it may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Some viewing configurations, including Apple TV, AirPlay, or older app versions, may have lower limits. YouTube’s DVR guidance explains these limitations.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API also distinguishes the incoming liveStream sent by a channel owner from the liveBroadcast viewers see. That distinction helps separate an ingest or transmission issue from a broadcast lifecycle or replay problem. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation
If the live player really went offline
Use the time of the cutoff to compare the YouTube Live Control Room status with the encoder’s own status and logs. The available facts in a report that only says “around 12 hours” are not enough to identify a cause; the timing alone does not prove YouTube imposed a cutoff.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check whether the encoder was still sending. Look at its live status and error messages near the time viewers lost the stream. If the encoder stopped or reported an error, investigate that software or machine first.
- Check CPU load and encoder health. YouTube recommends looking for encoder errors and high CPU load. Update the encoder software if it is out of date.
- Test the outbound internet connection. A stream can be affected by the connection sending it to YouTube. Test outbound connectivity rather than assuming that normal browsing or downloads prove the stream path is healthy.
- Try another encoder if the current one looks healthy. YouTube includes this as a diagnostic option when the problem persists, not as proof that one specific encoder caused the cutoff.
- If only the replay is missing, make a local recording next time. This protects a copy of the program; it does not keep the live broadcast connected.
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder software, errors, CPU load, and outbound internet strength. These checks help narrow down the issue, but only the stream’s own status and logs can establish what happened in a particular case.

For a broadcast that needs to continue unattended, the encoder and its connection must keep sending to YouTube. A local recording can protect the replay if the archive is not captured, but it does not replace a reliable live transmission. If you use a computer-based encoder, plan how you will monitor its status and respond to a connection or software interruption.
