First determine whether Wowza lost its incoming source or its outgoing YouTube connection. A target in Waiting may resume when its configured source returns; a target in Error means Wowza could not connect to YouTube and may require a version-appropriate, monitored retry. Don’t restart the whole server before checking those states.
Diagnose the disconnect before restarting
Wowza Streaming Engine has separate paths for receiving a stream and sending it to YouTube. If the input source is down, restarting the YouTube target cannot restore the missing video. If the input is active but the target has failed, focus on the destination connection.
- Check the incoming stream. In Engine Manager, open Incoming Streams and locate the expected stream. Confirm it is Active and receiving data. If it is missing or stopped, recover the encoder, camera, or other publisher and verify it is publishing under the source name configured for the target. Wowza recommends checking the incoming stream’s status, connections, uptime, and throughput in its YouTube streaming guide.
- Check the Stream Target. Confirm Stream Targets are enabled for the application and that the YouTube target itself is enabled. Interpret the state before taking action:
- Waiting: the target is enabled but is not yet pushing because the source is not connected or its destination connection is initializing. Check the source and allow initialization; Waiting alone does not prove a permanent failure.
- Active: Wowza is connected and actively pushing to the destination.
- Error: Wowza could not connect to the YouTube destination. If the input is active, investigate the destination path and logs.
- When the source returns, observe the target. A Wowza Community response reports that a configured target waits for its named source and resumes broadcasting when that source reappears. Treat this as community guidance, not a guarantee for every Engine version or configuration. Confirm the target state and YouTube preview before assuming recovery is complete. See the Wowza Community discussion.
If the source is active but the target is in Error
This points to the Wowza-to-YouTube connection rather than a missing input. Check the target’s destination details against the current YouTube Live Control Room event and inspect Wowza logs for the connection failure. Wowza’s guide describes the destination as a host, application, and generated stream key or name; YouTube ingest commonly uses RTMP on port 1935. Keep the stream key private.
- Verify the host and application match the destination shown for the current YouTube event.
- Verify the target uses the correct stream key or name for that event. If a key was changed or replaced in YouTube, update the Wowza target accordingly.
- Check whether the destination is available and whether logs show a connection or authentication failure.
- After correcting a confirmed configuration problem, check the target state again and confirm that YouTube receives a preview.
A destination target that enters Error may not automatically retry when YouTube becomes available again; a Wowza Community report discusses this behavior, but it does not establish a rule for all releases. If the source is healthy and the target remains in Error after the destination is corrected, consider a controlled retry using the REST API documented for your installed Engine version. The available documentation does not establish a universal restart endpoint or a script that is safe for every version.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Design a bounded automatic retry
Automate only the confirmed destination-side failure case. A retry loop should distinguish a down source from an errored target, avoid repeatedly restarting a healthy stream, and leave a clear record for an operator.
- Monitor the incoming stream and target state, and log each state transition with a timestamp.
- Retry only when the source is confirmed active and the target is in Error; do not treat Waiting as a retry condition by itself.
- Use the REST API reference for the exact Engine version installed before choosing an API call. The API action and authentication details are version-specific; do not copy an assumed endpoint from an unrelated release.
- Use a limited number of attempts with increasing delays between them. Stop after the retry limit rather than creating an endless restart loop.
- Record each attempt and its result, then alert an operator if the target remains in Error.
- Verify both Wowza’s target state and the YouTube Live Control Room preview after a successful retry.
Community guidance suggests API automation when an errored destination target does not retry, but does not provide a verified endpoint or production-ready implementation. For example, the discussion about restarting Stream Targets after an Engine error is not a substitute for the API reference matching your installation.

Check the media format before retrying repeatedly
Brief, repeated connections can point to an ingest or media-format issue rather than a transient target failure. YouTube’s current live encoder settings recommend keyframes every 2 seconds and say not to exceed 4 seconds. The page lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding.
For Wowza’s documented YouTube workflow, the stream must include audio. Wowza’s guide states, “Your video stream must include audio.” If the source is video-only, the guide points to ModuleAddAudioTrack. Correct a persistent format or audio issue rather than repeatedly restarting the target.

Troubleshoot by what you see
| Observation | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming stream is missing or not Active | The source-to-Wowza publishing path is down. | Restore the encoder or publisher and check the expected source name and incoming-stream status. |
| Target is Waiting | The source may not be connected, or destination connection setup may still be initializing. | Check the incoming stream and allow initialization; don’t assume Waiting means a permanent failure. |
| Source is Active; target is Error | Wowza could not connect to YouTube. | Check host, application, key or name, destination availability, and logs. If needed, use a bounded retry verified for your Engine version. |
| Target is Active; YouTube preview is absent | Active confirms Wowza is pushing, but does not by itself confirm the YouTube event is ready for viewers. | Check the event and ingest feedback in YouTube Live Control Room. |
| Connections repeatedly appear and drop | An ingest configuration or media-format problem is one possible cause. | Check keyframe interval, codec, constant bitrate, and audio against YouTube’s current encoder requirements. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded video playing on a YouTube channel 24/7, rather than send a live camera or encoder feed through Wowza, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams uploaded content as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded video playback to YouTube, not a camera input. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
