OBS dropping frames during a YouTube stream does not, by itself, mean your Indian VPS has run out of RAM. First identify which OBS counter is increasing, then compare it with memory, swap, CPU, and network evidence from the same failure window. Network dropped frames point to delivery trouble; rendering and encoding counters point to different kinds of performance limits.
What “dropped frames” means in OBS
OBS reports different kinds of streaming problems that are easy to mistake for one another. Open View > Stats and note the exact counter that rises while the problem occurs. OBS’s guidance distinguishes network dropped frames, frames missed due to rendering lag, and skipped frames due to encoding lag. These counters describe different failure paths, so diagnose the one you actually see before changing settings. See the OBS encoding performance guide.
- Network Dropped Frames: Frames could not be delivered reliably to the streaming service at the configured bitrate. OBS says an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with that bitrate can force it to drop frames rather than buffer them. This counter is not a RAM measurement. See OBS Help.
- Frames missed due to rendering lag: OBS could not render frames quickly enough. This points toward rendering or graphics workload, not automatically toward network trouble.
- Skipped frames due to encoding lag: OBS could not encode frames quickly enough. CPU or encoder capacity and workload are relevant checks.
Low available memory could still contribute indirectly to a stream failure. Memory pressure, heavy swapping, contention, or an out-of-memory (OOM) kill can impair or terminate processes. But a rising network-dropped-frames counter alone does not establish that chain of events.
Check OBS and VPS evidence from the same interval
Collect observations while the frames are dropping, or inspect logs for the failure period. A memory reading taken hours later may not reveal what happened during the stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In OBS, open View > Stats. Record which counter increases and when. Save the OBS log covering that same interval.
- Check effective memory availability. On Linux, inspect
/proc/meminfo, especiallyMemAvailable, rather than treating low free memory alone as proof of exhaustion. Linux documents these fields in its /proc documentation. - Check memory pressure and swap. If your kernel exposes it, inspect
/proc/pressure/memoryfor memory contention; also check swap use and activity. Pressure Stall Information is documented in the Linux PSI documentation. - Check the actual VPS or container limit. A container or cgroup may have a lower memory limit than the host’s apparent total. Use the limit applied to the OBS service, not just a host-level summary.
- Look for OOM events. Check the system or kernel logs around the failure for OOM-killer messages. The Linux OOM documentation explains related kernel reporting.
- Check CPU and other resource pressure. Review CPU utilization or load and, where available,
/proc/pressure/cpuand/proc/pressure/io. Correlate any spike with the OBS counter and timestamps.
No single reading is a diagnosis. The strongest evidence for a memory-related cause is a coincident pattern—such as memory pressure, heavy swapping, or an OOM event during the same interval as the streaming failure.
Choose the fix based on the counter and measurements
If network Dropped Frames rise
When memory and processing evidence remain healthy, investigate the VPS network route and egress stability, the configured bitrate, and the connection to YouTube’s ingest server. OBS states that its stream connection goes directly to the destination service; OBS does not relay the stream. Follow the OBS connection troubleshooting guide.

Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably, not one that merely works at its best moment. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video motion and monitoring stream health during the event. Its suggested bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current table for your actual configuration rather than applying a single bitrate to every stream: YouTube live encoder settings. Dynamic bitrate may soften the effect of congestion by reducing bitrate, but that trades away quality and does not fix an unstable route or other root cause.
If rendering or encoding lag rises
Reduce OBS’s workload and retest. Lowering resolution or frame rate are possible levers in OBS’s performance guidance; the right choice depends on the output you need and the available graphics, CPU, or encoder capacity. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it affected the counter you are tracking.

If memory pressure, swapping, or an OOM event coincides with failure
First confirm the service’s effective memory limit and identify what else is consuming resources. Reduce concurrent workload where possible. If measurements still show the VPS is constrained, evaluate an instance with more effective memory—and check its CPU allocation and network capacity too. A nominal host total is not necessarily the memory available to your OBS process. There is no established minimum RAM for this exact workload without knowing the server, OBS version, encoder, output settings, and concurrent tasks.
Retest without changing several variables at once
- Use representative gameplay motion and audio rather than a static scene alone.
- Record the OBS Stats counter, system resource readings, and timestamps during the test.
- Monitor YouTube stream health as well as OBS. YouTube advises testing representative content and checking stream health during the event (YouTube Help).
- Change one relevant setting or resource at a time, then compare the same evidence. A successful retest can show that a change helped under those conditions; it cannot establish what will happen under a different workload or network route.
Common symptoms and what to check next
| What you observe | What it suggests—and does not prove | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Network Dropped Frames rise; memory and CPU look healthy | Delivery trouble is more likely than RAM exhaustion, but the counter alone does not identify the network fault. | Check VPS egress and route stability, bitrate headroom, the YouTube ingest connection, and OBS connection guidance. |
| Rendering-lag or encoding-lag counter rises | OBS cannot render or encode the workload fast enough; this is distinct from network delivery loss. | Assess CPU/encoder capacity and reduce resolution or frame rate as appropriate. |
| Memory pressure or heavy swap activity coincides with the failure | Memory contention may be impairing the workload; confirm the service’s real limit and concurrent use. | Inspect service or cgroup limits, identify competing processes, and reduce workload before evaluating more effective VPS memory. |
| An OOM-killer event coincides with the failure | The kernel terminated a process for memory reasons; determine which process was killed and whether it was OBS or a related service. | Review kernel/system logs and the service’s memory limit, then reduce contention or reassess the instance. |
| No resource issue is visible after the stream ends | A later snapshot may not capture a short-lived spike or the failure interval. | Collect OBS, memory, swap, pressure, CPU, and log evidence during the next occurrence. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded videos playing continuously, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than a diagnosis or repair for an OBS VPS. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the files as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
