Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If OBS started disconnecting from YouTube after you changed encoder settings, first check the settings that control the outgoing stream—not every OBS preference. Verify the encoder and codec, rate control, bitrate, keyframe interval and frame rate, then confirm the YouTube RTMPS service and stream key. If OBS shows dropped frames, investigate the connection and bitrate before treating the encoder change as the cause.
Start with the signal OBS is showing
A disconnect that begins after an encoder change makes that change worth checking, but timing alone does not establish the cause. OBS distinguishes network-related dropped frames from other connection or configuration problems. Use the status you can see to choose what to check first.
- Dropped frames or a red/yellow connection indicator: Start with upload stability and bitrate. OBS says dropped frames indicate the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate; too many dropped frames can disconnect a stream. See OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.
- No dropped frames, but YouTube reports an ingest or format issue: Compare the output format and values with YouTube’s encoder recommendations.
- OBS cannot connect, or YouTube’s intended broadcast receives no data: Check the selected YouTube service, stream key and broadcast status.
Before changing anything, note your OBS version and operating system, the encoder name, the exact settings you changed, the disconnect or error text, and whether OBS reports dropped frames. Those details matter: there is no one reset sequence established for every encoder, OBS version and failure.
Check the output settings you changed
In OBS, open Settings > Output and inspect the active streaming output settings. The precise options shown can vary with the selected encoder and OBS version. Compare the values that apply to your configuration with YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Rate control: YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR).
- Codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1. Check that your selected encoder is actually outputting the codec you intend to use.
- Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Make sure the value matches the stream you intend to send.
- Bitrate: Match it to the codec, resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s bitrate table; do not choose a bitrate from resolution alone.
For one specific reference point, YouTube’s table gives H.264 at 1080p/60 fps a 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. For AV1 or H.265 at 1080p/60 fps, it gives a 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain those rates.
Confirm the YouTube destination and stream key
Compatible encoder values will not help if OBS is pointed at the wrong service, key or broadcast. In OBS, open Settings > Stream and confirm the service is YouTube RTMPS and that the selected stream key is the one for the intended YouTube event. Then check that event’s status in YouTube Live Control Room and look for whether YouTube is receiving data or showing an ingest warning. OBS’s YouTube streaming guide describes this setup and Live Control Room workflow; labels may vary as interfaces change.

If OBS reports dropped frames, test the connection branch
When dropped frames accompany the disconnect, OBS’s troubleshooting guidance points to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Reduce the bitrate to a level your stable upload connection can handle, while staying within YouTube’s applicable recommendations. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a universal target; actual stable upload capacity and YouTube’s limits still apply. The figure is an OBS troubleshooting suggestion published on 2024-09-30.
If lowering the bitrate does not resolve the problem, follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps to investigate the route to the ingest server, test another server or service where appropriate, and review network settings or software that may affect the connection. OBS describes dynamic bitrate as a workaround when underlying connection problems cannot be resolved; it may reduce stream quality and should not be mistaken for fixing the cause.

Roll back narrowly, then test
If the failure followed a change and you need to restore a known-good setup, change only the setting or settings you recently altered. Return those values to a configuration you know worked, or to values compatible with YouTube, and test each change separately. Avoid deleting OBS profiles, reinstalling OBS or resetting every preference as a first response: the official guidance cited here does not establish those as universal fixes.
Before returning to a live broadcast, test with representative motion and audio, and monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing before going live; this helps reveal problems that a static or brief test might miss.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Check first | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS shows dropped frames or a changing connection indicator | Connection stability and whether the upload link can sustain the bitrate | Lower bitrate to a sustainable level; then follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance. |
| OBS sends data, but YouTube reports a format or ingest warning | Codec, CBR, keyframe interval, bitrate, resolution and frame rate | Compare each applicable value with YouTube’s encoder guidance and bitrate table. |
| OBS will not connect, or the intended YouTube event receives no data | YouTube RTMPS service, selected stream key and broadcast status | Verify the destination in OBS and inspect the event in Live Control Room. |
| The problem persists without dropped frames or a clear YouTube warning | The exact error, changed setting, encoder and OBS log | Record those details and consult the OBS log rather than assuming the encoder is at fault. |
