If YouTube accepts your OBS stream from the host but an encoder in Docker cannot connect, test the container’s outbound network path separately. A bridge container has its own DNS and routing context; OBS working on the host does not prove the container can resolve or reach YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Start with the exact stream URL and protocol, then check DNS and TCP/TLS reachability from inside the container before changing encoding settings.
1. Confirm the YouTube stream URL, key, and protocol
In YouTube Live Control Room, check the current Stream URL and stream key, then verify that the encoder is configured for the intended protocol. RTMP and RTMPS are different connection configurations. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance says to reveal and copy the RTMPS URL when using RTMPS; use the value shown in Live Control Room rather than guessing an ingest hostname. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the server URL and encoder support when a connection times out.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not include it in public logs, screenshots, issue reports, or commands that may be recorded in shell history.
- If a third-party encoder fails to start, YouTube’s general troubleshooting guidance suggests generating a fresh key and updating the encoder: YouTube live-stream troubleshooting.
- For an RTMPS SSL or certificate error, verify both the RTMPS protocol and server. YouTube suggests trying port 443 in this case. Do not substitute a generic or guessed server address.
2. Compare DNS and outbound reachability from host and container
Use the exact hostname and port from the current YouTube ingest URL. First compare name resolution on the host and inside the running container; then test whether each environment can open a TCP connection to that same destination and port. Use tools available in the environment, such as a DNS lookup utility and a TCP/TLS client. Do not share commands or outputs that expose your stream key.
| What you observe inside the container | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The hostname does not resolve, while it resolves on the host | A container DNS or network-configuration difference is plausible; this result does not identify a specific cause. | Check the container’s DNS configuration and Docker network mode, then compare with your administrator’s expected DNS and VPN/proxy policy. |
| The hostname resolves, but TCP cannot connect to the destination port | Routing, outbound filtering, proxy or VPN policy, Docker firewall/NAT behavior, or upstream filtering may be involved. | Record the Docker network mode and ask the network administrator to check permitted outbound traffic and relevant host policy. |
| TCP/TLS connects, but the encoder is rejected or fails to start the stream | Network reachability is less likely to be the remaining issue; protocol, endpoint, key, TLS compatibility, or encoder behavior needs checking. | Recheck the selected protocol and current Live Control Room values, then inspect the encoder’s sanitized error message. |
These are diagnostic interpretations, not proof of the cause on a particular machine. Docker documents that bridge containers have their own network interface, IP address, gateway, routing table, and DNS services. On a default bridge, Docker normally uses masquerading to give containers external access. See Docker networking overview.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Check Docker networking and host policy
Identify whether the encoder uses the default bridge, a user-defined bridge, host networking, Docker Desktop, a VPN-attached network, or a custom network. The right remedy depends on the operating system, Docker Engine or Desktop setup, and local network policy.
- On Linux, check whether Docker firewall rules were disabled or overridden without replacement rules. Docker warns that bridge containers may lose internet access through masquerading if its firewalling is disabled without replacement rules. Review forwarding, firewall, proxy, and VPN policy with the system administrator.
- Do not blindly flush firewall rules, disable protections, or switch to host networking as a universal fix. Host networking changes isolation and is only appropriate when it fits the deployment and security requirements.
- Do not add
-por a Composeports:mapping as an outbound-connectivity fix. Publishing maps a host port to a container port so outside traffic can reach a listening service; it is not normally needed for a container-initiated connection to YouTube. Docker describes port publishing in its port publishing documentation.
4. Check bandwidth after the connection works
If the encoder reaches YouTube but the stream stutters or drops, check sustained upload capacity and competing traffic. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth beyond the total stream bitrate; this is guidance on its help page, not a guarantee for a particular connection. YouTube also notes that shared networks can limit the bandwidth available to an individual device. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and troubleshooting.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Bandwidth is more relevant to an established stream that is unstable than to a DNS failure or an immediate connection refusal. Diagnose reachability first, then compare the available upload capacity with the encoder’s total bitrate.
5. Consider HLS only if your encoder and workflow support it
YouTube HLS ingestion is a separate setup that requires an HLS-capable encoder and an HLS stream URL and key. It uses HTTPS POST/PUT to send video segments and has higher latency than RTMP, according to YouTube’s protocol guidance. It can be a valid choice for a compatible workflow, but switching to HLS does not solve missing container DNS or outbound routing.

Troubleshooting checklist
- Copy the current stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room; confirm whether the encoder should use RTMP or RTMPS.
- From the host and the container, compare DNS resolution for the exact ingest hostname.
- From both, test TCP/TLS reachability to the exact port. Record the error category without exposing the key.
- Note the container’s Docker network mode and whether Docker Desktop, a VPN, proxy, custom network, or host firewall is involved.
- If TCP/TLS succeeds, investigate protocol, endpoint, key, TLS compatibility, and encoder errors. If the stream connects but is unstable, then examine bitrate and upload headroom.
- When escalating, provide the OS, Docker Engine/Desktop version, image and network mode, URL protocol (not the key), and sanitized error output. Never send the stream key.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded video looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera.
