Active hours can help prevent an inconvenient restart; they cannot guarantee that a broadcast will never be interrupted. If the only encoder is on the PC that restarts, its feed stops while that PC is offline.
Plan for the restart, not just around it
A Windows update may require a restart. If your encoder runs on that Windows PC, it cannot send video during the reboot. Active hours reduce the risk of Windows restarting at an inconvenient time, but the dependable continuity measure is a separate, prepared encoder path and a tested handoff.
This guide assumes an encoder-based YouTube Live broadcast. The exact reconnect behavior depends on your encoder app, Windows configuration, account permissions, and scheduled-stream settings, so verify your own setup rather than assuming that reopening the app restores the event automatically.
Before the store promotion
Set Windows active hours
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours.
- Set active hours to cover setup, the full promotion, and teardown. Microsoft describes this setting as a way to help prevent inconvenient restarts, not as a guarantee against every restart or a way to defer updates indefinitely.
- If the controls are unavailable on a managed work PC, ask the administrator whether organizational update policies control them.
Windows 10 settings differ. Microsoft’s current active-hours page says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; prioritize Windows 11 or an appropriately supported Windows 10 servicing arrangement.

Install updates and restart ahead of time
Apply pending updates and restart well before the event. Then reopen the encoder and check the entire production chain: camera, microphone, scenes or overlays, and store-promo media. Confirm that the encoder is connected to the intended scheduled YouTube event.
Prepare an independent backup encoder
A second encoder running on the same Windows PC will not protect the stream if that PC reboots. Use a separate computer or a standalone hardware encoder for an independent path, after checking that it supports your camera, audio, overlays, and other production needs. YouTube documents hardware encoders but does not endorse a universal model for this use.

Confirm that primary and backup feeds are configured for the same event and that the operator knows how to activate the backup. YouTube recommends testing failover before the event: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player switches to the backup.
Check upload capacity and run a preflight
- Ensure total upload capacity exceeds the stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% spare capacity; if both encoders send feeds at once, include both feeds in the capacity calculation.
- Prepare the encoder well before the event. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the preview before starting, verify the watch page, and monitor audio and video quality.
- Confirm that your local recording is being written and that its file is growing.
If Windows restarts during the promotion
- Let Windows finish booting and sign in. Reopen the encoder and restore the camera, microphone, scenes, overlays, and promo media if they did not return automatically.
- Check the scheduled event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Confirm whether a preview or feed is arriving. Encoder setup uses a stream URL and stream key. If the encoder reports a key error, retrieve the current key from the Live Control Room and update the encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it.
- Reconnect and verify before relying on the stream. Start or reconnect the encoder, check preview and stream health, and follow the scheduled event’s configured go-live or auto-start behavior. Reopening the encoder does not necessarily restore the original live event.
- Use the tested backup if the primary path is down. Activate the independent backup and check the audience-facing player. If viewers experienced an interruption, give them a brief on-screen or spoken explanation.
- Check the recording afterward. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If the promo has business value, keep a separate local recording and verify that the file is valid.
Choose continuity that matches the cost of interruption
For a promotion where a brief outage is acceptable, one PC with planned maintenance is the simplest setup, but its feed stops during a reboot. A separate computer or standalone encoder adds setup and cost while providing a path independent of the Windows host. Decide based on how much interruption viewers can tolerate, whether failover is manual or automatic, compatibility with the production chain, network capacity, and budget. Test the actual switchover; having a backup configured is not proof that it works.
