If YouTube reports a stream-health warning after you changed FFmpeg codec settings, use the warning’s specific issue type to identify what to undo or adjust. Check the exact message in YouTube Live Control Room, compare the relevant output setting with YouTube’s encoder guidance, change one setting at a time, then test with representative audio and motion before relying on the stream. There is no safe universal repair command without your FFmpeg build, encoder, ingest protocol, and stream parameters.

Why is YouTube warning about my stream after I changed the codec?

A codec change can alter more than the codec name: it may also affect bitrate behavior, keyframe spacing, GOP mode, frame rate, resolution, or audio compatibility. YouTube’s Live Streaming API groups health issues by the problem it detects, including video or audio format, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, keyframe behavior, ingestion starvation, and mismatches between primary and backup feeds. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API health issue reference describes the issue categories and corrective guidance.

Start with the exact warning shown in Live Control Room rather than changing several FFmpeg options at once. A warning that identifies open GOP calls for a different fix than one reporting insufficient bitrate or an unsupported audio format.

How do I identify which setting to recover?

  1. Read the full warning in Live Control Room. Note its issue type and any suggested correction. Avoid treating a generic stream-health warning as proof that the video codec alone is at fault.
  2. Record what changed. Compare the previous and current video encoder, audio encoder, bitrate mode and values, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and GOP options. Also note whether you send the feed over RTMP or RTMPS.
  3. Match the issue to the setting. Codec or format warnings point to encoder compatibility; keyframe and GOP warnings point to interval or GOP mode; bitrate or ingestion-starved warnings call for checking both configured bitrate and outbound upload capacity. If you use primary and backup feeds, compare their codec, profile, resolution, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and audio/video bitrates.
  4. Change only the implicated setting first. This makes the next health result useful: if several settings change together, you may not know which one addressed the warning or introduced a new problem.

If the warning persists, keep the exact text and collect your FFmpeg version/build, selected video and audio encoders, ingest protocol, resolution, frame rate, bitrate settings, and relevant command options. Those details are needed to recommend a tailored command safely.

Which codecs and basic settings does YouTube support?

For RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube Help currently lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Check the guidance for your actual ingest mode and confirm that your FFmpeg build and selected encoder support the codec and options you intend to use. See YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

These are not interchangeable settings across every FFmpeg build or encoder backend. An option accepted by one encoder may be unavailable or have different private-option behavior in another. Use the option documentation for the encoder you selected and, where needed, its local help output.

How do I fix an unsupported video codec warning?

First confirm that the warning names the video format or codec, then select a video encoder that outputs a codec supported for your ingest protocol. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s published list includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. The codec name alone is not enough to diagnose every compatibility issue: the encoder implementation, profile, pixel format, and ingest mode may matter, so verify the combination in your FFmpeg build and test it in Live Control Room.

Do not change bitrate, GOP, frame rate, and audio settings preemptively if YouTube has identified only a codec issue. Make the smallest relevant change, send a test, and then address any new or remaining health message on its own terms.

What GOP or keyframe interval does YouTube need?

YouTube recommends keyframes every two seconds and sets a maximum interval of four seconds. FFmpeg’s -g option sets GOP size in frames, so convert seconds to frames using the stream’s frame rate: at 30 fps, a two-second interval is 60 frames. This is a frame-count conversion, not a guarantee that every encoder handles GOP-related options identically.

Pay attention to whether the warning concerns the interval or the GOP mode. YouTube’s health documentation identifies open GOP as unsupported and asks for closed GOP. FFmpeg documents -cgop as enabling open GOP, so remove that flag when configuring closed GOP. Check the selected encoder’s own options as well; FFmpeg’s general option documentation notes that encoder-specific settings may require consulting the relevant codec documentation or local encoder help. See FFmpeg codec documentation.

Is the warning caused by bitrate or my internet connection?

For H.264, YouTube Help gives these examples. They are tied to the listed codec, resolution, and frame rate; they are not universal settings for other combinations.

H.264 output Minimum bitrate setting Recommended bitrate setting
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

Use YouTube’s table for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate in your stream rather than applying one number to every setup. YouTube recommends CBR for RTMP/RTMPS. If Live Control Room reports ingestion starvation or a bitrate problem, compare the configured stream bitrate with the connection’s sustained outbound capacity; a suitable encoder setting cannot compensate for an upload connection that cannot keep sending it reliably. YouTube also advises testing before a live event and monitoring health messages while live.

How should I test the recovered settings?

  1. Use the intended stream configuration. Test with the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, audio path, and ingest protocol planned for the event.
  2. Include representative content. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” A static picture or silent test may not reveal problems that appear with gameplay motion or your real audio mix.
  3. Watch Live Control Room health messages. Confirm whether the original issue clears and note any new category before making another single-setting adjustment.
  4. Check the sending system if ingestion is starved. Verify sustained upload capacity against the configured bitrate. If you record locally as well, check that the archive file is still growing while the stream is sent.
  5. Compare backup and primary feeds, if applicable. Check their codec, profile, resolution, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and audio/video bitrate for parity when YouTube reports a feed mismatch.

Common recovery mistakes

  • Changing multiple settings at once: it obscures which change fixed or worsened the warning. Adjust the setting indicated by the issue type first.
  • Using a universal bitrate: bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, and the connection’s upload capacity also matters.
  • Assuming -g means seconds: it sets GOP size in frames. Convert the desired interval using the output frame rate.
  • Leaving -cgop in a closed-GOP configuration: FFmpeg documents this flag as enabling open GOP, which YouTube does not support.
  • Assuming a supported codec name guarantees a working stream: the ingest mode and encoder build must support the selected configuration, and the resulting stream still needs a health check.
  • Going live without a representative test: check both motion and audio before an event, then keep monitoring stream health during it.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel from uploaded videos rather than a camera-based live production, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream, and includes a first day free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
