There is no single Vultr VPS size that is right for every 24/7 YouTube stream. Choose according to whether you are simply sending pre-rendered video or running OBS scenes and encoding on the server, then check CPU, memory, outbound transfer and regional price. A standard Cloud Compute VM may suit a modest playout workload if testing confirms it has headroom; GPU compute is relevant to workflows that need GPU-assisted rendering, not a universal requirement.
Start by identifying what the VPS must do
A server that loops an already-rendered video has a different workload from one running OBS with animated overlays, transitions, browser sources, multiple scenes or multiple outputs. Live encoding and complex rendering can increase CPU or GPU demand; a simple playout may be lighter. Vultr does not publish a minimum VPS size that guarantees a particular YouTube resolution or frame rate, so do not treat a plan name or vCPU count as a quality guarantee.
- For a modest workflow, consider standard Cloud Compute and test the actual stream.
- If OBS shows sustained high CPU use, reduce output resolution or move to a plan with more vCPUs, as Vultr advises in its OBS and Ubuntu guide.
- If measurements show a sustained compute bottleneck, compare dedicated or optimized compute options. Vultr identifies video transcoding as a demanding workload and offers general-purpose, CPU-optimized, memory-optimized and storage-optimized categories; the category label alone does not guarantee stream performance. See Vultr Compute documentation.
- For remotely accessible OBS with GPU-integrated scene rendering, consider Vultr’s Broadcaster setup on an A16 GPU instance. It may be more than a simple headless playout needs. See Vultr’s Broadcaster guide.
Set the YouTube output target before choosing capacity
Use YouTube’s recommendations for the codec, resolution and frame rate you intend to send. Examples from its current live encoder settings are:
| Output | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 4K at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not evidence that a particular Vultr instance can encode at that quality. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Test the encoder and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on a configuration.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Estimate outbound transfer, not just server bandwidth
Vultr counts outbound traffic toward bandwidth usage; inbound traffic does not count. A continuously transmitted 1 Mbps stream sends roughly 10.8 GB per day, or about 324 GB over 30 days, using decimal units. That is a calculation from bitrate multiplied by time, before protocol overhead or a backup stream—not a Vultr allowance. Double the bitrate or number of simultaneous outputs and the estimate scales accordingly.
Capacity planning should leave network headroom: YouTube recommends 20% above the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup capacity where applicable. Then compare your projected outbound use with the included transfer and overage terms for the exact Vultr instance and location. Monitor usage and any overage in the Vultr console. See YouTube’s streaming tips and Vultr’s bandwidth billing explanation.

Compare the practical compute paths
| Path | Consider it when | What to validate |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Cloud Compute with OBS on Ubuntu | The stream has modest scenes or is primarily pre-rendered playout. | Measure CPU and memory under representative conditions; high OBS CPU can lead to dropped frames or buffering. Reduce resolution or test a plan with more vCPUs if needed. Vultr’s Ubuntu/OBS guide does not specify a guaranteed minimum size. |
| Dedicated or optimized compute | Measurements show sustained CPU limits, or the workload needs more predictable compute for tasks such as transcoding. | Compare the actual plan resources, transfer allowance and price for the deployment location. Vultr’s compute documentation describes categories, not guaranteed YouTube quality. |
| Vultr Broadcaster on A16 GPU | You want browser-accessible OBS and GPU-integrated scene rendering. | Follow the Broadcaster deployment guide; monitor the OBS live counter and CPU. A GPU is not automatically necessary for a simple loop. |
Vultr’s specific rates, regional availability, included transfer and GPU instance details can change. Check the official pricing guidance and the current plan details for your chosen location before estimating a 24/7 monthly cost; regional variation may apply.
Test the setup before leaving it live
- Prepare a representative stream. Use video with similar motion and audio to what you expect to run continuously; configure the intended codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate.
- Run a sustained test. Check YouTube stream health and OBS dropped frames while observing server CPU and memory. For Broadcaster, Vultr’s guide also points to the OBS live counter and CPU use.
- Check transfer usage. Compare observed outbound traffic with the projection for your target bitrate and verify the instance’s current transfer terms in the Vultr console.
- Test the intended operating pattern. If you plan to disconnect remote desktop access, confirm the stream remains active after disconnecting, rather than assuming the desktop session can be closed safely.
- Adjust based on evidence. If CPU stays high or frames drop, reduce output resolution or test more vCPUs; if bandwidth approaches the allowance, revisit bitrate, outputs and plan transfer terms.
Troubleshooting common sizing problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports high CPU, dropped frames or buffering | Encoding load may exceed available CPU, or the output target may be too demanding. | Reduce resolution or frame rate and retest; if CPU remains high, try a plan with more vCPUs. Vultr’s OBS/Ubuntu guide recommends those responses. |
| Local stream output is stable but YouTube reports poor stream health | Check the configured bitrate, network headroom and ingest settings. | Use YouTube’s target settings for the chosen codec and resolution, keep the recommended 20% headroom, and verify RTMPS, constant bitrate and keyframe interval in the encoder. |
| Transfer approaches the included allowance | Continuous outbound bitrate and simultaneous outputs determine usage. | Calculate expected monthly traffic from bitrate and time, then check instance-specific transfer and overage terms in Vultr’s console. |
| The stream stops after remote access ends | The OBS or playout process may depend on the desktop session or its lifecycle. | Reproduce the planned disconnect during testing and configure the process so it continues in the intended operating mode; verify YouTube remains live before relying on it. |
Check YouTube eligibility and content rights
Before deploying a 24/7 feed, confirm the channel is verified and has not had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s getting-started guidance states a minimum age of 16. A technically stable loop is not permission to rebroadcast content: use video and audio you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s current live-stream rules, copyright requirements and monetization policies. Reused or repetitive content can raise separate monetization questions even when a stream is technically allowed.
