To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live with OBS from a cloud desktop, install OBS on the remote machine, add the video as a Media Source, enable Loop, then connect OBS to a YouTube stream URL and stream key. Test the full setup and monitor YouTube’s stream health: a cloud desktop can keep your home computer out of the workflow, but neither a particular cloud configuration nor OBS reconnect settings guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s setup guidance.
  • A cloud desktop that you can access remotely, with an operating system supported by OBS and a suitable encoding configuration for your planned resolution, frame rate, and scene.
  • The video file stored somewhere the remote desktop can access throughout the broadcast. OBS Media Source uses a local file path, so confirm the file is present and readable on the remote machine.
  • OBS Studio, a stable outbound network path, and the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room.

Cloud vendors document Windows virtual desktops and GPU-backed workstations, but those descriptions are not OBS performance certifications. OBS says requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming. Test the exact machine and scene you intend to use before relying on it. See the OBS system requirements, AWS Research and Engineering Studio documentation, AWS remote workstation documentation, and Google Cloud’s Windows workstation guide for examples of documented desktop and GPU offerings.

Choose and prepare the cloud desktop

Compare configurations for the workload, not just the words “GPU” or “workstation” in a product description. OBS may use hardware or software encoding; the right choice depends on the video settings, scene, and performance available to the remote machine.

  • Encoding capability: Check which GPU and hardware encoders are exposed to your desktop session, and whether your OBS installation can use them.
  • Network: Confirm the machine has enough stable outbound capacity for the selected bitrate. The cloud desktop’s connection to YouTube—not your home upload speed—carries the stream.
  • Remote access: Make sure you can reconnect to the desktop to check OBS and the media file without ending the broadcast.
  • Persistence and runtime controls: Check whether files and OBS settings survive a stop, rebuild, or shutdown, and whether the service has autostop or scheduled shutdown settings that could interrupt the stream.
  • Location and cost: Check geographic availability and the total charge for the actual runtime. Costs and available configurations vary by provider; the official descriptions cited here do not establish a universal instance size or price for OBS looping.

For example, AWS documents Windows 10/11 and Windows Server desktop options in Research and Engineering Studio, and GPU-backed G4 instances for graphics-intensive workstations. Google Cloud documents creating GPU-accelerated Windows workstations. These are possible building blocks, not a tested recipe for a 24/7 OBS broadcast.

Set up the YouTube stream first

  1. Enable live streaming early. If the channel has never streamed with an encoder, enable live streaming in YouTube Studio and allow for possible activation time of up to 24 hours.
  2. Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create a stream or select an existing one.
  3. Review broadcast details. Confirm the title, audience setting, visibility, and scheduling before going live. YouTube notes that default privacy can depend on the account holder’s age; creators can change the privacy setting.
  4. Copy the connection details. Copy the stream URL and the matching stream key shown for the selected stream. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, share it, or leave it in exposed logs.

See YouTube’s guide to setting up a live stream with an encoder for the current Live Control Room flow.

Install OBS and build a looping scene

  1. Install OBS Studio on the cloud desktop from the official OBS site, then open it in the remote session.
  2. Run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. OBS recommends the wizard because suitable settings depend on the actual system and workload; still verify the final settings with a test.
  3. Create or select a scene. In Sources, choose + → Media Source, give it a recognizable name, and select the video file on the remote desktop.
  4. Enable Loop in the Media Source properties. OBS will restart the media when playback completes. OBS lists formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; a supported container does not guarantee that a particular file will play correctly, so check it in the preview.
  5. Set Restart playback when source becomes active according to how you want the source to behave if it is activated again. Decide whether Show nothing when playback ends is appropriate; with Loop enabled, the file should restart at its end, but test the transition.
  6. Check the preview for framing, black borders, and audio. Add overlays or other sources only when needed, since scene complexity affects the workload.

OBS’s Media Sources guide describes the source options. Keep the media file available at the same path for the duration of the run; do not assume a cloud disk or mounted storage will persist through every stop or rebuild workflow.

Connect OBS to YouTube and choose stream settings

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Stream.
  2. Choose YouTube if it is available in the service list, or configure the server with the stream URL provided by YouTube.
  3. Enter the stream key for the same stream selected in Live Control Room. Keep it private.
  4. Open Settings → Output and choose the encoder and bitrate. Select a resolution and frame rate that the cloud desktop can encode and its outbound network can sustain.
  5. Use YouTube’s encoder guidance for protocol and encoding settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Its current bitrate table varies by resolution and frame rate—for example, YouTube lists 2 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. Confirm the table for your chosen settings rather than treating that example as universal.

For settings and the current bitrate recommendations, consult YouTube’s encoder settings guide. A bitrate is not the total network requirement: leave headroom for connection variation and other traffic on the desktop’s outbound path.

Preflight the broadcast and go live

  1. Start with a representative test: use the intended video, audio, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and any overlays. A static test image will not reveal the same encoding load or audio problems as the real scene.
  2. In OBS, check that the Media Source is playing and the audio meter responds. Listen to the stream output if possible; visible meter activity alone does not confirm that the right audio reaches YouTube.
  3. Start streaming in OBS. Open the matching broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room and check the preview, stream health, and any messages before sharing the watch page or announcing the stream.
  4. Let the loop cross its ending during the test. Confirm that playback restarts as intended and that the transition does not introduce an unwanted blank screen or audio gap.
  5. After correcting any issues, run a longer test that reflects the planned runtime. Recheck the desktop’s runtime controls, file access, and remote reconnection path.

YouTube recommends a connection capable of carrying the selected bitrate and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. Its guidance recommends RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP.

Plan for interruptions and long broadcasts

In OBS, configure automatic reconnect in the streaming settings if appropriate for your connection, and test what happens when the desktop briefly loses network access. Reconnect can help after some disconnections; it is not a promise that every failure will recover, nor does it protect against a stopped or rebuilt desktop, an unavailable media file, or an expired or changed stream configuration. Arrange a way to check both the remote session and YouTube’s health during the run.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a longer broadcast will be archived, or that an OBS loop will run forever without interruption. If an archive matters, keep the planned broadcast below that duration and verify the result in the channel after the stream.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
OBS shows no video or audio The media path is wrong or inaccessible, the file is incompatible or damaged, or the source is inactive. Open the Media Source properties, verify the remote file path, and test the file locally on the desktop. Check source visibility and audio routing in OBS.
The video plays once and stops Loop is not enabled on that Media Source. Open the source properties and enable Loop; test the end-to-start transition.
YouTube does not receive the stream The stream key or URL is mismatched, the channel is not enabled for live streaming, or the outbound connection is blocked or unstable. Confirm OBS and Live Control Room refer to the same stream, re-enter the correct key privately, check live-stream enablement, and review YouTube’s health messages.
Stream health reports a weak or unstable connection The selected bitrate exceeds sustained outbound capacity, or the connection varies. Reduce bitrate or output settings, check the cloud desktop’s network path, and repeat a representative test before the planned broadcast.
Frames drop or encoding overload appears The instance’s encoder or graphics resources cannot handle the chosen workload, or the scene is too complex. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, reduce resolution or frame rate, test a supported hardware encoder if available, and simplify the scene. There is no universal instance size established for OBS.
The broadcast stops when you disconnect The desktop provider may be configured to shut down or stop the instance when a session ends, or OBS may not be running as expected. Check the provider’s session, autostop, and scheduled-shutdown settings; disconnect from the remote session without shutting down the desktop, then verify from another session that OBS remains live.
The stream reconnects but the loop does not resume as expected OBS, the source, or the desktop state may not have recovered as anticipated. Test a simulated short network interruption before launch. Verify the source remains active and the file path is accessible; do not rely on reconnect without monitoring.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a prerecorded-video YouTube stream rather than managing a remote OBS desktop, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free first day on StreamNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a cloud desktop make an OBS loop automatically continuous?

No. You still need to test the full setup and monitor the desktop and YouTube stream health; reconnect settings do not guarantee recovery from every failure.
