It is the shared practical choice for TikTok for Business creative, Instagram Reels publishing through Meta’s API, and vertical YouTube Shorts. But the platforms’ cited guidance describes different workflows: YouTube also accepts square Shorts, and 1080 × 1920 is one 9:16 size—not a universal upload requirement established for all three services.
What 9:16 means—and whether it means 1080 × 1920
An aspect ratio describes a frame’s shape, not its pixel count. In 9:16, the frame is nine units wide for every 16 units tall. A 1080 × 1920-pixel video has that ratio, as would another resolution with the same proportions.
That distinction matters when exporting: the cited official guidance supports 9:16 as a suitable portrait shape, but does not establish 1080 × 1920 as a universal current requirement for organic uploads to TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels. Treat it as a common working canvas, not a single rule shared by every app and publishing route.

The linked specifications do not provide a complete set of current organic upload limits for TikTok and Instagram, including all accepted ratios, resolution floors, and file constraints. Verify the destination app’s current prompts when publishing in-app.

How to make one vertical video work across all three
- Set a portrait canvas. For a full-screen vertical master, use a 9:16 frame. TikTok for Business recommends it for full-screen creative, Meta’s API reference recommends it for Reels publishing, and YouTube accepts vertical Shorts.
- Compose for the frame. Keep faces, captions, and other important details clear of interface controls and safe-zone overlays. TikTok and Meta both direct creators to consider safe zones, but the sources do not establish one universal pixel margin for every placement.
- Export without baked-in bars. If your source is horizontal or square, avoid placing black bars in the exported image just to fill a vertical frame. YouTube says padding interferes with the player’s ability to adapt dynamically to the video and viewer’s device.
- Preview in each destination. Check that text and key visuals remain visible in TikTok, Shorts, and Reels before posting. Their controls and display behavior are not identical.
- Check the publishing route’s limits. In particular, distinguish Instagram’s API requirements from organic in-app posting. Do not assume an API limit applies unchanged in the app.
Playback, thumbnails, and filming details
YouTube may show a vertical video differently on desktop
YouTube’s player adapts to the aspect ratio and the viewer’s device, so a vertical 9:16 video can appear with padding in desktop browsers. YouTube Help advises: “For best results, avoid adding padding or black bars directly to your video.” Let the player handle the presentation rather than baking bars into the upload. A Shorts thumbnail is a separate asset
Do not confuse the video’s dimensions with its thumbnail. YouTube recommends a 9:16 aspect ratio for custom Shorts thumbnails and gives 2160 × 3840 as its recommended thumbnail resolution. YouTube Help: Add custom thumbnails on YouTube

Why Reels ad guidance is not an organic-post guarantee
Meta for Business reports 34.5% lower cost per result for Reels ads made as 9:16 video with audio and key elements in safe zones, compared with image ads. Meta describes a statistical global meta-analysis of 15 split tests for Reels-only campaigns, with a 99.9% confidence level.
