For most SDR uploads, export a progressive MP4 using H.264, keep the recording’s frame rate and natural aspect ratio, use BT.709 color, and choose a video bitrate from YouTube’s recommendation for your resolution and frame-rate class. AAC-LC audio at 48 kHz is a straightforward compatible choice. These are recommendations, not exact requirements or guarantees of quality.
Recommended YouTube upload settings at a glance
| Setting | Recommended starting point |
|---|---|
| Container | MP4, with the moov atom at the front (Fast Start); avoid edit lists. |
| Video codec | H.264, progressive scan, High Profile, CABAC, variable bitrate, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, two consecutive B frames, and closed GOP with a GOP length half the frame rate. |
| Frame rate | Match the source recording; do not change it without a specific reason. |
| Resolution and shape | Use the resolution and aspect ratio appropriate to the source. Do not add padding or black bars. |
| SDR color | BT.709, with metadata that reflects how the video was mastered. |
| Audio | AAC-LC at 48 kHz; choose mono, stereo, or 5.1 as appropriate to the soundtrack. |
YouTube publishes a detailed recommended upload encoding settings page. Its settings are guidance for recorded uploads, not a requirement to hit an exact bitrate. YouTube says there is no required bitrate limit; actual bitrate depends on codec, resolution, aspect ratio, and frame rate.
Choose a video bitrate by resolution and frame rate
The following figures are YouTube’s recommended upload encoding bitrates. “Standard” frame rate means 24, 25, or 30 fps; “high” means 48, 50, or 60 fps. They are reference values, not minimums, guarantees, or settings for a live stream.
| Output resolution | SDR, standard fps | SDR, high fps | HDR, standard fps | HDR, high fps |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8K | 80–160 Mbps | 120–240 Mbps | 100–200 Mbps | 150–300 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 35–45 Mbps | 53–68 Mbps | 44–56 Mbps | 66–85 Mbps |
| 1440p (2K) | 16 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 20 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 1080p | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 720p | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps | 6.5 Mbps | 9.5 Mbps |
| 480p | 2.5 Mbps | 4 Mbps | Not supported | Not supported |
| 360p | 1 Mbps | 1.5 Mbps | Not supported | Not supported |
For example, a 1080p SDR video recorded at 30 fps has an 8 Mbps video-bitrate recommendation; for 1080p SDR at 60 fps, the reference is 12 Mbps. Use the row and column that match your export. If your encoder offers a quality-based mode instead of a target bitrate, YouTube’s table does not make one setting universally correct; check the finished file and avoid treating the reference as a pass/fail threshold.

HDR values apply to an HDR workflow; do not select them merely to raise the bitrate of an SDR video. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations and further format details are on its upload encoding settings page and video and audio formatting specifications.
Set frame rate, resolution, and aspect ratio
Preserve the source frame rate
Export at the frame rate in which the footage was recorded. YouTube lists 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps as common rates while allowing others. Converting a recording to a different frame rate can change motion; do not do it simply because a higher number looks preferable.
If your material is interlaced, deinterlace it before upload. YouTube’s example is converting 1080i60 material to 1080p30. For the original recommendation, see YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.

Use the right output resolution and shape
Export at the intended resolution without enlarging low-resolution footage just to label it as 4K. In standard 16:9 video, common examples are 1920×1080 for 1080p and 3840×2160 for 4K. The YouTube player adapts to vertical, square, and other aspect ratios, so preserve the source’s natural shape instead of baking in black bars or padding. YouTube identifies 16:9 as the standard computer-player aspect ratio; its resolution and aspect-ratio guidance explains how the player handles different shapes.
A new 4K upload may need a browser or device that supports VP9 for 4K playback. Choosing a 4K export does not guarantee that every viewer’s device will offer a 4K playback option.
Use MP4, H.264, and progressive video
For a broadly compatible standard upload, choose an MP4 container with H.264 video and progressive scan. YouTube’s detailed recommendations also list High Profile, two consecutive B frames, CABAC, variable bitrate, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, and a closed GOP whose length is half the frame rate.

For MP4, YouTube recommends placing the moov atom at the front of the file (“Fast Start”) and says to avoid edit lists, which may prevent correct processing. Many editing applications expose these details in export or advanced encoding settings; labels and available controls vary by application. If a setting is unavailable, use the application’s standard H.264 MP4 export and consult its documentation rather than changing unrelated options blindly.
Set SDR color and audio correctly
Color
For SDR, use BT.709 and make sure the color metadata matches how the video was mastered. YouTube warns that unsupported color spaces may be converted and says it converts full-range video to limited range. A mismatch between the image and its metadata can therefore affect how the upload looks. See YouTube’s encoding guidance and upload troubleshooting page.

YouTube lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio, with a 48 kHz sample rate. AAC-LC is a straightforward default for compatibility. Its audio bitrate recommendations are 128 kbps for mono, 384 kbps for stereo, and 512 kbps for 5.1. Use the channel layout that matches your actual soundtrack; audio bitrate is not determined by video resolution.

YouTube lists stereo, stereo plus 5.1, or stereo plus Eclipsa Audio as channel-layout options. If you do not have a multichannel mix, do not manufacture one by upmixing stereo. Check the audio settings against YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Apply the settings in your video editor
- Choose an MP4 export and H.264 video.
- Set scan mode to progressive. If the source is interlaced, deinterlace it rather than exporting another interlaced file.
- Keep the source frame rate and natural aspect ratio. Select an output resolution suitable for the footage and intended upload.
- For SDR, set BT.709 color and metadata that matches the mastered video. For HDR, use an HDR workflow and the matching HDR bitrate column; do not label SDR material as HDR.
- Choose a bitrate reference from the table for the resolution, SDR/HDR format, and frame-rate class. Treat it as YouTube’s recommendation, not a minimum or quality guarantee.
- Set audio to AAC-LC at 48 kHz, using the channel layout and bitrate appropriate to the soundtrack.
- If the editor exposes advanced H.264 controls, use YouTube’s listed settings: High Profile, two consecutive B frames, CABAC, variable bitrate, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, and a closed GOP length half the frame rate. For MP4, enable Fast Start and avoid edit lists where those options are available.
- Review the exported file before uploading: confirm the picture shape, motion, color, audio sync, and soundtrack. Upload a short test if an export preset or unfamiliar setting changes the result.
Allow time for YouTube processing
An upload may first be playable only at low quality. HD and 4K renditions can take longer—potentially several hours—to finish processing. If viewers need the higher resolutions available at the moment of release, upload the video as unlisted, wait until the desired quality options appear, then make it public. YouTube describes this behavior in its upload audio or video troubleshooting guidance.
Common upload problems and fixes
- Only low-resolution playback is available: Higher renditions may still be processing. Wait and check again; for a scheduled release, upload unlisted first and publish after the required quality appears.
- The video looks stretched or has bars: Check that the export preserves the source aspect ratio and does not add padding or black bars. The YouTube player can adapt to vertical and square formats.
- Motion looks uneven: Verify that the export frame rate matches the recording. Deinterlace interlaced footage rather than treating it as progressive.
- Color looks wrong after upload: Check that the file uses a supported color space and that its metadata reflects the mastering workflow. For SDR, YouTube recommends BT.709; it converts full range to limited range.
- The MP4 does not process as expected: If your editor exposes these options, use Fast Start to put the moov atom at the front and avoid edit lists.
- 4K is not offered on a viewer’s device: YouTube notes that a browser or device supporting VP9 is needed to view new uploads in 4K; the availability of that playback option is device-dependent.

Keep recorded uploads separate from live-stream settings
This guide is for exporting a recorded video file and uploading it. YouTube Live encoder recommendations are a separate workflow; do not copy live-stream settings into a recorded-video export simply because both involve video and bitrate.
Or let it run in the cloud
Export settings above are for ordinary recorded uploads. If your goal is instead to keep pre-recorded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; there is no re-encode or quality tier. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
