Add the MOV as an OBS Media Source, set the output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, and encode the outgoing stream as a codec YouTube accepts. YouTube’s English guidance recommends 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC and 50 Mbps for H.264 at 4K60. Test the actual file, sustained upload, audio, and stream health before relying on it live.
How the ProRes-to-YouTube workflow works
OBS plays the ProRes file from your computer and encodes the broadcast that it sends to YouTube. YouTube’s live ingest guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codecs; it does not list ProRes as a live ingest codec. OBS documents ProRes support for MOV and MKV as media formats, so the distinction is important: your local source can be ProRes while the outgoing stream uses a YouTube-compatible codec.
OBS Media Sources add media files to a scene, and the OBS guide lists MOV among supported extensions. A MOV extension does not guarantee smooth playback of every ProRes profile, frame rate, or color configuration on every computer. Use the actual file in a full test rather than treating format support as a performance guarantee. See the official OBS Media Sources guide, OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide, and OBS Studio Overview.
Configure OBS and YouTube for 4K60
-
Add the ProRes file as a Media Source
In OBS, open or create the scene for the broadcast. In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source, name the source, and choose the local MOV file. Enable Loop if the video should repeat. Depending on the scene workflow, consider Restart playback when source becomes active, Use hardware decoding when available, and Show nothing when playback ends. Confirm the source fits the canvas as intended and check that its audio is present.

Set the canvas, output resolution, and frame rate
In Settings → Video, set the intended Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160, then set Common FPS Values to 60. If the file is not itself 60 fps, OBS can still output at 60 fps, but the result does not create new source motion; inspect playback and pacing in the test. OBS distinguishes the canvas from the scaled output, so check both rather than changing only one value.

Create the YouTube live event and connect OBS
In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS under Settings → Stream (or use the available YouTube account connection flow). Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube can normally detect resolution and frame rate; its live settings help also describes custom stream keys for manually choosing resolution. Follow the prompts in YouTube Studio for your stream setup.

Choose an outgoing encoder and codec
In Settings → Output, choose an encoder available on your system and configure its video codec for YouTube-compatible ingest. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live video. OBS identifies H.264 as its broadly compatible web codec; AV1 or HEVC availability and real-time performance depend on the host and encoder. Do not select ProRes as the live ingest codec simply because the source file is ProRes.
-
Set bitrate, rate control, keyframes, and audio
For the encoder settings, use CBR (constant bitrate) and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. The YouTube English live encoder settings page, accessed October 3, 2026, gives these 4K/2160p60 figures:

Outgoing video codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps These are YouTube’s published live-stream settings, not a promise that a particular internet connection or computer will sustain the stream. Use the recommended value only if your upload can hold it steadily during the full broadcast; the page advises an upload speed test but does not establish one universal headroom multiplier. For RTMP/RTMPS audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Prefer RTMPS where supported, as YouTube recommends it. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
-
Match SDR or HDR settings to the source
For SDR, YouTube’s guidance recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, it lists H.265/HEVC and 10-bit, and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Check the source’s color properties and the encoder/output configuration together; a ProRes file’s color format does not by itself ensure that OBS and YouTube preserve the intended appearance. Validate the actual setup with a test stream.

Test playback and stream health before the real broadcast
Run the complete configuration with footage that has comparable motion and audio to the planned stream. Confirm OBS playback remains smooth, audio is synchronized and audible, and YouTube Studio reports healthy ingest without warnings. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” The cited guidance states that 4K/2160 streams do not have YouTube’s low-latency option and use normal latency.
Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems
- The Media Source will not play the file: Confirm the selected path and file are accessible, then test the exact MOV in OBS. MOV extension support does not establish compatibility with every ProRes profile or color configuration. If playback still fails, investigate the file’s specific encoding and the host’s decoding support rather than assuming every ProRes MOV is interchangeable.
- Playback stutters or OBS struggles: 4K60 decoding and encoding require sustained work from the host. Check OBS’s performance and stream health during a representative test. The official guidance does not establish a universal computer, storage device, or hardware requirement; avoid buying equipment on the assumption that one model is mandatory.
- YouTube reports a bitrate or connection problem: Verify the selected codec’s bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance. Test sustained upload capacity, not just a brief peak, and lower the stream target if the connection cannot reliably hold the recommended rate.
- The stream is not 4K60: Recheck both OBS output resolution and frame rate, then inspect the YouTube event’s detected stream details. Confirm that the correct event and stream key are in use; YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate, while custom stream keys can be used for manual selection.
- HDR looks washed out, clipped, or incorrectly colored: Check whether the source is SDR or HDR and whether OBS output and the selected codec follow the corresponding YouTube guidance. For HDR, YouTube specifies HEVC and 10-bit and excludes AV1; perform an end-to-end test because source format alone does not validate output handling.
- There is no sound or audio is out of sync: Check the Media Source audio routing and OBS audio meters, then confirm the outgoing audio codec is AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. Test with the same scene and source settings planned for the broadcast.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
Having a ProRes file or permission to use a local copy does not automatically establish that you may broadcast its video or audio. Before streaming, confirm the rights or licenses cover public live transmission, including music, gameplay footage, and other embedded material. YouTube may detect copyrighted material during a live stream; follow the notices and restrictions shown in YouTube Studio. Reusing footage also does not, by itself, establish compliance with YouTube’s channel monetization policies. Check the current rules applicable to your channel and content before broadcasting.
