There is no Streamlabs Desktop preset that guarantees a stable 24/7 YouTube stream. For the best chance of keeping it running, choose a resolution and frame rate your computer can encode continuously, set a YouTube-compatible bitrate your connection can sustain with reserve, and test the entire setup before relying on it. Keep a local recording if you need a complete archive: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
Choose settings for reliability, not maximum quality
YouTube’s guidance is to choose a quality that can produce a reliable stream on your internet connection. Its bitrate recommendations are ingest targets, not guarantees that a particular PC, encoder, or network will hold up continuously. Measure upload performance under realistic conditions, then choose settings with room for variation.
For H.264, YouTube recommends these video bitrates:
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations; the page does not state a publication year. The table also has separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265. Use the row for the codec Streamlabs actually sends, and confirm it against YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A higher frame rate or resolution is not automatically better for a long broadcast: it raises the load on the encoder and may require a different bitrate. If your computer or connection struggles, lower the output resolution or frame rate before pushing the bitrate to the edge of your available capacity.
Allow enough upload headroom
YouTube recommends having total upload capacity exceed the total outgoing bitrate by 20%. Include audio and any additional output, such as a backup stream, in your capacity planning. Shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to the streaming computer, so a speed test on an otherwise idle connection may overstate what you can sustain during the broadcast.
- Test outbound bandwidth at the time and on the network you plan to stream from.
- Keep the outgoing bitrate comfortably below the capacity you can sustain; do not select settings at the measured limit.
- If sending both primary and backup outputs, count both toward total outgoing bitrate.
YouTube notes that connectivity disruptions can break a live stream. Headroom lowers the risk from ordinary variation; it cannot prevent a network outage.

Set YouTube-compatible encoder and audio options
In Streamlabs Desktop, check the output configuration against YouTube’s current ingest guidance. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and a keyframe interval no longer than 4 seconds. It supports video codecs including H.264, H.265, and AV1 where supported, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the connection protocol.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Video codec: Select a codec supported by YouTube and actually available in your Streamlabs setup; match its bitrate guidance.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 128 kbps for stereo audio at a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate.
- Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended option.
Exact controls and available codecs can vary with the Streamlabs version, operating system, and hardware. Verify the outgoing settings in Streamlabs and the current requirements in YouTube’s encoder documentation; do not assume a setting is correct just because a preset uses it.
Choose an encoder your system can sustain
Streamlabs explains that x264 uses the CPU, while hardware encoders such as NVENC use the GPU. Neither choice is universally best: a hardware encoder does not fix a weak connection, and its performance depends on the computer. Choose the option that leaves adequate headroom on your actual system while the game or other program is running.

Streamlabs’ Desktop setup guide advises testing the configuration because settings differ by platform. For a 24/7 run, assess performance over a representative period, not just a short idle test.
Enable Dynamic Bitrate as a fallback
Streamlabs Desktop has an option to lower bitrate when network issues cause dropped frames, then gradually move back toward the target as conditions improve. It can help with changing network conditions, but it cannot add upload capacity or prevent a power failure, computer crash, encoder fault, or YouTube-side outage.
- Open Settings > Advanced in Streamlabs Desktop.
- Enable Dynamically change bitrate when dropping frames while streaming.
- Set a sensible target bitrate first, based on the codec, resolution, frame rate, and available sustained upload capacity.
- Test the feature and observe its behavior on your own setup before depending on it during a long broadcast.
Streamlabs describes Dynamic Bitrate as a response to network problems, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. See its Dynamic Bitrate explanation.

Run a preflight and monitor the live stream
Before a long broadcast, start the encoder in advance and check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Use representative audio and movement—such as gameplay—because a static test image does not exercise the same workload. YouTube’s encoder guidance and live streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring stream health and messages.
- Run a private or unlisted test and confirm that the stream appears in the Live Control Room preview and on its watch page.
- Check picture, audio, motion, resolution, and frame rate; review Live Control Room stream health and any specific error messages.
- Observe upload use and CPU/GPU load while the intended program is active. Confirm capacity remains available beyond the outgoing stream bitrate.
- If recording locally, confirm that the file is growing and that the destination has enough free space for the planned duration.
- Have a recovery plan for a failure, and verify reconnect behavior on the actual installation rather than assuming it will work.
Stream health and errors are displayed in YouTube Live Control Room. Monitoring can help you identify a problem; it does not keep a failed computer or connection running.

YouTube Help puts it plainly: “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” The archive guidance does not make an external SSD a requirement; it is one possible storage destination. Estimate capacity from the recording bitrate and how long you need to retain the file, and avoid relying on the platform archive as the only copy.
Common problems and what to check
- Dropped frames during network changes: Check Live Control Room messages and sustained upload capacity. Reduce the target bitrate or output resolution/frame rate, restore headroom, and use Dynamic Bitrate as a mitigation.
- Encoding lag or overloaded system: Check CPU/GPU load while the intended program is running. Lower output demands or choose the encoder that performs better on that machine, then test again.
- Stream appears unstable despite matching YouTube’s bitrate table: The table specifies ingest recommendations, not system capability. Recheck shared-network usage, headroom, encoder load, and whether the actual outgoing codec and settings match the configured ones.
- Expected archive is missing or incomplete: For broadcasts longer than 12 hours, YouTube may not capture the stream. Use a local recording when the complete run matters and verify that it is continuing to grow.
- Reconnect behavior is uncertain: Test the actual Streamlabs installation and have a way to restore the stream. No cited guidance establishes that one configuration guarantees recovery from every failure.
