Use FFmpeg’s -c copy option to send an already encoded 1080p video to YouTube without decoding and re-encoding its audio or video. The source must already be 1080p and its codecs, encoding characteristics and container must be compatible with YouTube’s live ingest. Streamcopy preserves the source; it cannot resize it or adjust its bitrate or keyframes.
What you need before you start
- An existing video file with the resolution and frame rate you want to stream.
- FFmpeg installed on the computer that will send the stream.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available and a stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the file’s existing video and audio bitrates.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. That list does not guarantee that every file using one of those codecs will work in every container or ingest configuration. With -c copy, FFmpeg does not convert an unsupported stream to a supported one.
Check whether the file is suitable for streamcopy
Confirm resolution and frame rate
Streamcopy forwards encoded packets; it does not scale, crop or change frame rate. If the file is not already 1920×1080, sending it with -c copy will not make it 1080p. If you need a different resolution or frame rate, use a transcoding workflow instead.
Compare the source with YouTube’s encoder guidance
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Streamcopy preserves the source’s encoding characteristics, so these settings must already be appropriate; the command below cannot retune them.

| H.264 live video target | YouTube Help guidance, current page accessed 2026 |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum |
These are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not values imposed by FFmpeg’s -c copy. A copied file retains its existing bitrate, keyframes, codec and frame rate. Do not treat the H.264 figures as bitrate recommendations for HEVC or AV1.
Check the output container and audio
The command uses FLV output, a common RTMP ingest format. FFmpeg warns that streamcopy can fail when required information is unavailable in the output container. If a file cannot be muxed this way, changing the container alone may not resolve codec or stream-property incompatibility.

The optional audio map, -map 0:a:0?, selects the first audio stream when present and avoids failing solely because the file has no audio stream. The video map explicitly selects the first video stream. If the source has multiple audio tracks and you need a different one, select the intended track rather than assuming the first is correct.
Get the YouTube stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Keep the key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. Do not publish it, share it in screenshots or leave it in a command-history location others can access.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension of RTMP. Use the exact destination details supplied in Live Control Room; do not guess the URL or key format.

Send the file with FFmpeg
- Replace the input filename. In the command below, change
input.mp4to the path of your file. - Set the destination. Replace the quoted destination with the stream URL and key provided by YouTube. Use the exact values from Live Control Room, joined as required by the supplied destination details.
- Run the command. Keep the computer and FFmpeg process running while the broadcast is active.
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy -f flv "<YouTube stream URL>/<stream key>"
-re reads the file at its normal playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. -i names the input. The two -map options choose the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream. -c copy selects streamcopy: FFmpeg sends the existing encoded packets without decoding or encoding. -f flv selects the output muxer.
FFmpeg’s documentation describes streamcopy as copying packets without decoding, filtering or encoding. It avoids generational quality loss from another encode, but it also rules out filters, since filters operate on decoded frames. The command is a practical starting template, not a guarantee for every source file, FFmpeg build or YouTube ingest configuration.

Test the broadcast and check stream health
- Start the FFmpeg command and open the selected stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check the stream preview and YouTube’s stream-health messages before sharing the broadcast with viewers.
- Use representative audio and movement when testing. YouTube advises testing with the content and conditions expected for the actual stream.
- If YouTube reports an ingest problem, compare the source’s codecs, bitrate and keyframe interval with the encoder guidance, then check that the stream URL and key are correct.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple viewing formats for different devices and network conditions. That happens downstream at YouTube; it does not mean FFmpeg re-encodes the source before sending it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When streamcopy is the wrong choice
Use a transcoding workflow rather than -c copy if the file needs scaling to 1920×1080, an overlay, frame-rate conversion, color processing, a codec change or other filter-based changes. Those operations require decoding and processing, so at least the affected stream must be encoded again. Streamcopy is the better fit when the source already has the picture, encoding and stream properties you want to deliver and you want to avoid another encode.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The output is not 1080p | The source is not already 1920×1080; streamcopy does not resize. | Check the source file’s resolution. If it needs scaling, transcode instead of using -c copy. |
| FFmpeg reports that streams cannot be copied or muxed | A codec, stream property or required piece of container information is incompatible with the chosen output. | Check the input streams and the FLV muxing path. A container change alone may not fix codec incompatibility. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or ingest warnings | The source’s bitrate or keyframe interval may not match the chosen ingest target, or the connection may not sustain the stream. | Compare the existing source encoding with YouTube’s guidance and inspect Live Control Room health messages. Streamcopy cannot change bitrate or keyframes. |
| The stream does not appear in Live Control Room | The destination URL or stream key may be incorrect, or the FFmpeg process may not be sending successfully. | Copy the current values from Live Control Room, check the command destination and review FFmpeg’s terminal output. Treat the key as a credential. |
| There is no audio | The source may have no audio, or the first audio stream may not be the track you intended. | Check which audio streams the file contains and map the intended track. The optional map suppresses an error for files with no audio; it does not create audio. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a pre-recorded video to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving FFmpeg and a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded file at its existing quality, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
