Start with the exact product’s size guide
A size chart belongs to a particular product. A T-shirt and a hoodie can fit differently even when they share the same nominal size, and charts from different blanks or suppliers are not interchangeable. Before publishing measurements, open the current guide for the exact product and confirm its cut, available sizes, and measurement diagram. Printful’s T-shirt guide for product 748 and hoodie guide for product 380 illustrate why each garment needs its own chart.
Do not apply a fit note from one item to another. For example, the cited Printful hoodie guide says that particular product runs small and recommends ordering one size larger. That is supplier guidance for that hoodie, not a universal rule for hoodies or creator merch.
Tell shoppers what each measurement means
Put the measurement basis directly above the chart. A flat garment width is not the same as a person’s chest circumference: the first measures across the garment, while the second goes around a body. Printful’s seller guidance recommends being clear about whether a chart shows flat clothing dimensions or “to fit” body guidance; it was published May 6, 2026. - Garment measurements: measurements taken from the item itself, usually laid flat for width.
- Body measurements: measurements taken around or along the person, used to describe the body the garment is intended to fit.
- Fit guidance: a supplier’s recommendation about how a specific item fits. Keep it separate from the measurements and attribute it to that product’s guide.
Do not label a flat width “chest circumference.” If you provide both garment dimensions and body-fit guidance, give them separate labels and explain how each was measured.
Measure a similar garment shoppers already own
A familiar T-shirt or hoodie can help a shopper interpret the numbers. Suggest comparing it with the charted item, while making clear that comparison is a guide rather than a guarantee of fit. A flexible cloth measuring tape is useful if the shopper needs one, but it is not necessary to buy one if an appropriate tape is already available.

- Lay the garment flat. Smooth it without stretching it, and use the measurement points shown in the exact product guide.
- Measure length. For the cited Printful T-shirt, measure from the high point of the shoulder beside the collar down to the bottom hem.
- Measure width. For that T-shirt, measure straight across from the seam beneath one sleeve to the seam beneath the other.
- Compare like with like. Match garment length to garment length and flat width to flat width. Do not compare a flat width directly with a body circumference.
- Check the product diagram. Another garment may use different measuring points or labels. Follow its own guide rather than assuming the T-shirt method applies.
Printful’s cited product guides state that measurements may vary by up to 2 inches (5 cm). This tolerance is stated for those product guides; it is not an industry-wide guarantee or a figure to apply automatically to other suppliers.
Choose units and present the chart clearly
Use one consistent unit system in the chart and label it in the headings or table caption. Printful documents metric and imperial choices for its product size guides; see its instructions on changing measurement units. For a primarily US audience, inches may be convenient; for international shoppers, adding centimeters can make comparisons easier, provided the conversions are accurate and clearly labeled.

A clear chart should identify the product and fit, state whether entries are garment or body measurements, name each measurement, and label the units. Copy the current supplier measurements accurately rather than filling gaps with a conversion or estimate. If you offer multiple cuts or garment types, show a separate chart for each and compare only corresponding measurements.
Keep garment fit separate from print size
A size chart answers how the garment measures; it does not tell shoppers how large the artwork will look. Printful says, as a general rule, it does not scale designs based on garment size, while also describing product-specific exceptions, including downscaling for smaller sizes or limitations from smaller print areas. Check the artwork guidance for each product separately using the Printful Help Center’s design-scaling guidance. Do not promise the same visible print scale across sizes unless the product guidance supports that claim.

Recheck the chart when the product changes
If you switch suppliers, blanks, fits, or product variants, revisit the size chart and print-area guidance before updating the listing. A chart copied from a previous product can become misleading even if the new product uses the same size labels. Avoid claims such as “true to size” unless you can substantiate them for that specific item; there is no universal cross-brand sizing scale established here.
