How to Restart a Pre-Recorded YouTube Live Stream Automatically After a PC Reboot

Set YouTube’s encoder start settings, launch OBS automatically, plan for late network startup, and test what happens to the event after a reboot.

You can make OBS launch and attempt to resume streaming after a Windows reboot, but automatic OBS startup alone does not guarantee that YouTube will restart the same live event. Configure the YouTube event to accept encoder start and stop, start OBS automatically, account for the network coming back late, and test the complete setup with the event you plan to use.

How the restart works

There are two separate pieces to configure: Windows must launch your encoder and OBS must connect to YouTube; YouTube must be set up to start the event when it receives the encoder feed. A reboot can interrupt either part. If OBS starts before the router or internet connection is ready, a one-time launch may fail to reconnect.

YouTube’s encoder workflow covers creating or scheduling a stream, connecting the encoder, checking its preview, and going live. Follow the steps in YouTube’s encoder setup guide for the event you will use.

Set up the YouTube event

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS. Treat the key as a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
  3. Open the event’s stream settings and check Auto-start and Auto-stop. YouTube says these settings allow you to start or stop streaming from the encoder. Confirm them on the specific event rather than assuming copied or scheduled settings have the values you want. See Manage live stream settings.
  4. Use the event’s privacy and scheduling controls deliberately. For an initial test, choose a private or unlisted event if that suits your channel and test needs.

Auto-start controls whether encoder activity can start the event; it is not a guarantee that a reboot will resume the same broadcast or preserve the same replay. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that archive rule does not establish what happens to a particular event after a dropped signal and reboot.

Make OBS launch when Windows starts

Use a Startup-folder shortcut

  1. In Windows, create a shortcut to the OBS executable or to the OBS shortcut you already use.
  2. Add --startstreaming to the shortcut’s target after the executable path, following the usual Windows shortcut format: close the quoted path, add a space, then the argument. For example, the target would end with obs64.exe" --startstreaming. The exact executable location depends on your OBS installation.
  3. Open the current Windows account’s Startup folder by pressing Win+R, entering shell:startup, and pressing Enter. Place the shortcut there.
  4. Sign in to that Windows account after a reboot and confirm OBS opens and attempts to stream. Check that the installed OBS version accepts the argument and that the chosen Windows sign-in arrangement actually runs Startup-folder apps.

This launch-argument and Startup-folder approach is community guidance from an OBS Project forum discussion, not a guarantee for every OBS version or Windows configuration. Do a controlled test before depending on it.

Consider Task Scheduler for more control

If you need a delay, a specific account, or a more deliberate startup trigger, Windows Task Scheduler can launch OBS at sign-in or startup. Configure a delay or a retry mechanism so OBS does not make only one attempt while the router is still reconnecting. Exact Task Scheduler choices depend on how the PC signs in and whether OBS needs the desktop session; test your selected arrangement rather than assuming a background task will behave like an interactive launch.

Handle internet startup delays and failed connections

After a power interruption, the PC may boot before the modem or router has restored internet access. The OBS forum discussion notes that auto-reconnect may not help if the initial connection never succeeds. A Startup-folder shortcut is therefore not equivalent to a network-aware recovery system.

  • Allow time for network equipment to reconnect before OBS starts, using a launch delay if appropriate.
  • For more resilience, use a task or script that checks for internet access and retries or relaunches OBS after connectivity is available. The forum post suggests this general approach, but does not establish one universal script or guarantee.
  • Keep the computer powered, set to avoid sleeping during the stream, and connected to the network you intend to use. A reboot restart cannot help if Windows remains shut down or the machine cannot sign in as configured.

Verify the feed and test event continuity

  1. After a normal OBS start, open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and wait for the encoder preview or status to show that video is arriving.
  2. For a technical check, Google’s Live Streaming API documentation defines status.streamStatus as active when YouTube’s servers are receiving encoder data. See Life of a Broadcast. Most channel operators can simply use the Live Control Room preview.
  3. With a private or unlisted test event, simulate the condition you care about: stop the feed or reboot the PC, wait for the network to return, and observe whether OBS reconnects and what YouTube does with the event.
  4. Check whether the event continues, needs a new start, or results in a separate broadcast/replay. The cited YouTube setup documentation does not promise one universal post-reboot outcome, so make the decision based on your own event configuration and test.

What to expect when something fails

Symptom Likely cause What to check
OBS opens, but YouTube receives no video The encoder started before internet access was ready, or it could not connect. Check the network, wait for YouTube’s preview, and add a delay or network-aware retry before relying on unattended startup.
OBS sends video, but the event does not start The event’s encoder-driven start setting may be off, or the wrong event/settings are in use. Verify the stream key and URL in OBS and check Auto-start for the specific event in Live Control Room.
The event does not appear to resume as the same broadcast YouTube’s cited setup guidance does not establish same-event continuity after a reboot or dropped signal. Test with the actual event setup and confirm the event and replay behavior in Studio; do not assume the under-12-hour archive rule guarantees continuity.
OBS does not start after sign-in The shortcut may be missing from the relevant account’s Startup folder, or the launch argument may not work as expected with the installed version. Test the shortcut manually, verify the target and sign-in account, and confirm the launch method on the installed OBS version.
