Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You can loop a prerecorded video into a 4K/60 fps YouTube Live stream from a Linux mini PC with OBS Studio, but YouTube’s ingest settings do not guarantee that any particular mini PC can sustain the workload. Set up the loop, configure OBS for YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate guidance, then rehearse under load before relying on it for a long broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live streaming help, so do it ahead of your planned broadcast.
- A Linux mini PC, working network connection with sufficient and stable upload capacity, and the prerecorded video file or playlist.
- OBS Studio installed for your Linux distribution. OBS lists OpenGL 3.3 and X Window System or Wayland among its Linux basic requirements; meeting them does not guarantee that the system can stream at a given resolution or frame rate.
- A stream URL and private stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, and reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed.
The specific mini PC, Linux distribution, driver, and OBS build determine which encoders are available and whether they can sustain 4K60. Verify those on your own system rather than assuming that a supported processor or GPU can handle continuous streaming.
Enable YouTube Live and get the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel if it is not already enabled. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. Keep the key private; if it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room.
Install OBS on Linux
Install OBS using the package route supported by your distribution. OBS recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions and documents an Ubuntu installation path on its Linux installation page. Package builds can differ, including the encoders they expose, so confirm the installed version opens correctly and check its available output encoders before configuring the stream.
Build a looping video source
Loop one video with Media Source
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene.
- Select the local video file.
- Enable Loop in the source properties, then confirm the video plays and restarts as expected.
OBS documents Media Sources for local media playback and looping. Check the file’s resolution, frame rate, audio, and color against the output you intend to send. A loop setting does not itself guarantee gapless playback or uninterrupted operation.

Loop a playlist with VLC Video
- Install a VLC package compatible with your Linux system.
- Add a VLC Video source in OBS and load the playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then test transitions between files and confirm the audio behaves as intended.
OBS’s media sources documentation describes both source options. Media Source is the simpler choice for one file; VLC Video supports a collection but depends on VLC being installed. The documentation does not establish which source is more reliable for an unattended multi-day broadcast.
Configure OBS for YouTube 4K60
- Set the output resolution to 3840×2160 and frame rate to 60 fps. Confirm that the preview and source are framed correctly at this canvas size.
- Choose a video encoder that appears in your installed OBS build and is supported by the mini PC’s hardware, drivers, and YouTube. For 4K/2160p at 60 fps, YouTube’s current encoder settings page lists these bitrate ranges:
| Incoming video codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations, not evidence that a particular Linux encoder, mini PC, or internet connection can sustain them. The current YouTube help page does not display a publication year; figures here reflect the page retrieved on 2026-10-03. Use guidance for the codec actually being sent, and choose a stable bitrate within it.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Set bitrate mode to CBR and keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Set the video codec to H.264, H.265, or AV1 only if that option is supported by the selected OBS encoder and YouTube ingest configuration.
- For SDR, set color space to Rec. 709 and color depth to 8-bit, as applicable to your OBS encoder and output settings.
- For audio, use AAC or MP3. YouTube lists 128 Kbps stereo in its advanced settings.
- In OBS’s streaming settings, select the YouTube RTMPS service or enter the RTMPS server URL, then add the stream key retrieved from Live Control Room. Verify the service and key before starting the stream.
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as supported ingest protocols and supports up to 60 fps. Its low-latency option is unavailable for 4K/2160p, so a 4K stream uses normal latency. Check YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and current encoder settings and bitrate table when configuring a live stream; these settings can change.
Check Linux hardware encoding and sustained capacity
Hardware encoding can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component, but the presence of a compatible encoder name is not a performance guarantee. OBS documents Linux support for NVIDIA NVENC on GeForce 750 Ti/900-series (Maxwell) or newer, with current GPU drivers, and for Intel Quick Sync Video on Intel Core-i CPU 2xxx or newer; OBS recommends Core-i 4xxx or newer because earlier generations had lower quality. Those are compatibility notes, not certification for sustained 4K60 on a mini PC.

- Check the exact CPU or GPU, firmware, Linux driver, and OBS build.
- Confirm that the intended encoder appears in OBS and is selected for the stream.
- Check cooling and power behavior during extended load; a small chassis may behave differently after it heats up.
- Use a wired network connection where possible, and verify stable upstream capacity above the chosen stream bitrate with practical headroom.
- Keep the media file accessible and check that the source does not stall or lose audio.
OBS states on its system requirements page: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its performance demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Without a named mini PC and software stack, no model-specific 4K60 recommendation or sustained-performance claim is justified.
Rehearse, go live, and monitor stream health
- Run a rehearsal with video movement and audio similar to the planned stream. YouTube specifically instructs creators to test with similar audio and movement before going live.
- Continue the rehearsal long enough to watch for overheating, encoder overload, dropped frames, audio interruptions, or media-source stalls.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages while OBS is sending the feed. Confirm the incoming resolution and frame rate and address any warnings before relying on the stream.
- Start or schedule the live broadcast through Live Control Room and monitor the session. Remember that 4K uses normal latency rather than the low-latency option.
For a stream intended to run continuously, plan how you will recover from internet or power loss, operating-system updates, an OBS crash, and a damaged or unavailable source file. A local OBS loop depends on the mini PC, its power, network, software, and media source staying available.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot select the intended hardware encoder | The mini PC, driver, package build, or OBS version does not expose it. | Check the exact hardware and Linux driver, update or install the appropriate OBS build, and confirm the encoder is listed before going live. Do not assume that a processor generation guarantees availability. |
| Encoder overload or skipped frames | The encoder cannot sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate, scene, or bitrate under the current load. | Rehearse under realistic sustained load and inspect OBS statistics. Verify the selected encoder and reduce workload or output demands if the machine cannot keep up; do not treat YouTube’s recommended bitrate as proof of hardware capacity. |
| Dropped frames or unstable stream health | Upload capacity varies or is too close to the outgoing bitrate. | Test the connection while streaming, use a stable wired connection if available, and provide practical bandwidth headroom above the configured bitrate. |
| Video stops at the end of the file | Media Source looping is disabled, or the playlist loop is not enabled. | For one file, check Loop in Media Source properties. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source and verify VLC is installed. |
| Stream does not appear in YouTube | Live streaming has not finished enabling, or the RTMPS URL, stream key, or selected stream is wrong. | Allow up to 24 hours for first-time live enablement; verify the stream details in Live Control Room and re-enter the correct URL and key in OBS. |
| Audio is missing or interrupted | The source file, OBS audio routing, encoder settings, or sustained system load is at fault. | Test the actual source audio in rehearsal, confirm OBS audio meters move, and verify an accepted AAC or MP3 configuration. |
| Latency is higher than expected | 4K/2160p cannot use YouTube’s low-latency option. | Plan for normal latency at 4K rather than expecting the low-latency setting to be available. |
