You can’t run YouTube’s native thumbnail A/B test on a scheduled stream while it is live. Monitor the broadcast in YouTube Studio, then test up to three thumbnail options on its eligible public long-form archive. YouTube chooses a result by watch-time share—not CTR alone—and says a test can take a few days to two weeks.
Choose the right kind of test
For a live 24/7 broadcast, YouTube Studio’s Live analytics provide performance monitoring, not a randomized comparison of thumbnail variants. To compare thumbnails concurrently using YouTube’s native Test & compare feature, use the saved live archive after it is available and eligible.

Monitor the thumbnail while the stream is live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Analytics.
- Select the Live view.
- Track impressions, impressions CTR, views, and average view duration together. Use these to understand how the active broadcast is performing; do not treat them as an A/B test of thumbnail options.
An impression is counted only when a thumbnail is visible for more than one second and at least 50% of it is visible. The impressions report does not include every way a viewer might encounter a stream: external websites and apps and some other surfaces are excluded. CTR also varies by audience, content, and where the thumbnail appears, so a small, short-term movement is not reliable proof that a thumbnail is better.
Test the saved live archive in YouTube Studio
Check that the archive is eligible
After the live broadcast has ended and its archive is available, confirm in YouTube Studio that it is public, long-form, and otherwise eligible for Test & compare. YouTube lists scheduled live streams as ineligible while live; an eligible live archive can be tested. The feature is available on desktop and requires advanced features. If the archive or channel does not meet the requirements, the test option may not be available.

Set up the experiment
- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and select the archived live video.
- Find Thumbnail, then select Test & compare.
- Upload up to three meaningfully different thumbnail options and start the test. The experiment starts when the video is published.
Design variants to answer a specific visual question. For example, compare different compositions, backgrounds, text overlays, or object placement. TeamYouTube recommends exploring meaningful differences in these elements. If the options are nearly identical, the test may not distinguish them. Keep the archive title unchanged during the experiment if you want to learn about the thumbnail rather than the combined effect of multiple changes.
Read the result without overclaiming
YouTube evaluates the variants by watch-time share, which reflects what viewers do after clicking; a higher CTR by itself does not make an option the “Winner.” The result may show a statistically clear winner, a preferred option with less certainty, or no meaningful difference. YouTube says final results may take a few days or up to two weeks. If no clear winner appears, choose a suitable option or try more distinct variants rather than treating a tiny difference as proof.

You can stop the test and manually set a thumbnail if needed. YouTube does not provide a fixed sample-size threshold in the sources cited below for declaring a reliable winner; the time estimate is not a guarantee that every test will produce one.
Why changing the thumbnail during a 24/7 broadcast is weaker evidence
A manual before-and-after comparison may help you observe how the stream performs after a change, but it cannot reliably separate thumbnail effects from shifts in audience composition, traffic source, time of day, or stream conditions. YouTube’s guidance cautions against reading small CTR differences as decisive and notes that sequential comparisons can be affected by changes in audience and traffic mix. Prefer the concurrent archive experiment when the goal is to compare options more directly.
