Playback-based CPM tells you what advertisers paid, on average, for 1,000 video playbacks that included at least one ad. It is not your earnings per 1,000 total views. To review a nonstop stream, read it alongside CPM, monetized playbacks, ad impressions, estimated ad revenue, and RPM in YouTube Analytics—and compare equivalent periods rather than aiming for a universal “good” rate.
What playback-based CPM measures
YouTube defines CPM as the cost an advertiser pays for 1,000 ad impressions. Playback-based CPM is the cost advertisers pay for 1,000 video playbacks in which an ad is displayed. The second measure is based on ad-supported playbacks, not every view.
A playback can include more than one ad. As a result, one monetized playback may generate multiple ad impressions, so CPM and playback-based CPM can differ. Use CPM to understand advertiser cost per impression; use playback-based CPM to understand advertiser cost per ad-supported playback. Neither is a direct measure of creator earnings. YouTube’s example is an illustration, not a target
YouTube’s explanatory example starts with 5,000 views: 1,000 views with one ad and 500 views with two ads. That yields 1,500 monetized playbacks and 2,000 ad impressions. With $7 in advertiser spend, the example produces a $3.50 CPM and a $4.67 playback-based CPM. These figures illustrate the calculation; they are not a typical result, forecast, or benchmark for a live stream.

How RPM differs
RPM is a creator-focused metric: revenue after YouTube’s share per 1,000 views. It can include multiple revenue sources, and its view denominator includes views that did not generate revenue. YouTube notes that RPM is generally lower than CPM for these reasons. A change in RPM by itself does not tell you which revenue source moved.
How to review it for a live stream or replay
- Check monetization eligibility and status. Confirm the channel and stream are monetized. Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue for long-form and live-stream videos requires accepting the Watch Page Monetization Module. See YouTube’s monetization options.
- Open YouTube Analytics and use the Live filter. YouTube directs creators to the Live filter for a breakdown of live-stream ad revenue. Review the stream and its replay where available. The guidance does not promise a dedicated playback-based CPM report specifically for nonstop streams; use the metrics Analytics makes available for the selected content and period. - Read the rate beside the volume metrics. Check playback-based CPM together with CPM, estimated monetized playbacks, ad impressions, total views, and estimated ad revenue. The rate describes advertiser cost among relevant ad-supported activity; the counts show how many playbacks and impressions actually occurred.
- Compare like with like. Use equivalent date ranges and comparable streams or replays. Check audience geography, time of year, and ad-format mix before attributing a change to content or settings; YouTube identifies these as factors that can affect CPM.
- Review ad settings without assuming delivery. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically on when live-stream monetization is on. Mid-rolls can be automatic or manual. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. If using manual mid-rolls, breaks must be inserted; a manual setup with no inserted breaks will not serve mid-rolls.
Why views can be high while monetized playbacks are low
A view does not necessarily include an ad. Whether a viewer receives an ad depends on YouTube’s ad systems and the circumstances of that playback; an available slot is not a promise of an ad. Therefore, total views and monetized playbacks are different counts, and a large view total does not imply that every view generated an ad impression or revenue.

When the gap changes, check the reporting period, audience geography, seasonality, and ad formats alongside the delivery counts. A difference in playback-based CPM alone does not establish why fewer views included ads or prove that a particular stream setting caused the change.
How to compare two streams or reporting periods
Keep the comparison on the same axes instead of treating one headline rate as the whole result:

- Monetized playbacks and total views: check how the ad-supported playback count relates to all views.
- Ad impressions per monetized playback: use the two counts to see whether ad-supported playbacks included different numbers of impressions on average.
- Estimated ad revenue and RPM: review creator-facing outcomes as well as advertiser-cost rates; RPM can reflect revenue sources beyond ads.
- Audience and inventory context: note geography, seasonality, and ad-format mix so a change is not assigned to content or settings without evidence.
Do not estimate creator earnings by multiplying playback-based CPM by all views. Playback-based CPM concerns advertiser cost for ad-containing playbacks, while creator revenue reflects YouTube’s revenue share and monetization across views and other sources.
Is there a good playback-based CPM for a 24/7 stream?
YouTube’s official guidance does not establish a universal target for nonstop-stream playback-based CPM. Rates vary with factors including viewer geography, seasonality, and available ad formats. The useful comparison is your own comparable periods or streams, with monetized-playback and impression counts beside the rate—not a single number borrowed from another channel.

Policy and monetization context
Monetization depends on eligibility and applicable YouTube rules; a high playback-based CPM does not show that a stream is policy-safe or that every nonstop stream qualifies. YouTube says channel monetization policies apply to live streaming and monetized content must comply with applicable policies, including advertiser-friendly requirements. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies as well as the Watch Page module terms for the revenue features you use.
