Wirecast can send a continuous stream to YouTube and has documented internet-reconnect behavior, but the available official guidance does not establish that it can run indefinitely unattended. Reconnecting after an internet outage is not the same as restarting Wirecast or the computer after a crash, recovering from a power failure, or guaranteeing that YouTube stays live. Plan to monitor the full setup and have a recovery path.
What Wirecast’s reconnect behavior does—and does not—mean
YouTube lists Wirecast among its software encoders. Telestream’s version history also records a fix for Wirecast 13.1.2, released April 23, 2020: “Wirecast no longer hangs when losing Internet connection, and it will automatically reconnect after the Internet connection is restored.” That is evidence of reconnect behavior after internet connectivity returns; it is not a service-level guarantee or evidence that every interruption will recover.
The official material reviewed does not establish a supported maximum continuous runtime, automatic relaunch after Wirecast or the operating system crashes, or recovery after a computer loses power. Treat the entire chain as the reliability unit: the video and audio source, computer, Wirecast, network, YouTube event, and power.
What you need to operate a long-running stream
Meet YouTube’s account requirements
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. These are prerequisites for livestreaming, not assurances that an active stream will recover from a failure.

Allow upload headroom
YouTube recommends leaving bandwidth above the stream’s total bitrate; its streaming tips specify 20% headroom. Other devices sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to the streaming computer, and an internet disruption can break the stream. Select settings your tested connection can sustain with room to spare rather than relying on its peak speed.
Use stable encoder settings
YouTube’s guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube gives a recommended video bitrate range of 5–14 Mbps. The appropriate point in that range depends on the available upload capacity and the content; test the real workload, including its motion and audio.

Use RTMPS where supported. These settings can help the encoder deliver a compatible stream, but they do not make the computer, network, or YouTube event failure-proof.
How to test and monitor a Wirecast setup
- Set up the encoder before the planned start. Configure the intended source, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and YouTube destination in Wirecast. Use the same content and settings you expect to run continuously.
- Preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and check its audio and video quality before relying on the public stream.
- Check the public event on more than one route. Verify that the stream is available from the channel or watch page, and check it on a mobile device as well as the production computer.
- Test backup failover. YouTube recommends testing backup encoder rollover. For a controlled test, stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet connection and observe whether the backup takes over as intended.
- Monitor the live output. YouTube advises continuous monitoring for audio and video quality. Check the stream itself, not just the status shown in Wirecast.
- Check local recordings. If you are recording locally, confirm that the archive file is valid and continues to grow. A recording setting alone does not prove that the file is complete or usable.
What happens when the stream passes 12 hours?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not establish that a longer stream will or will not be archived in full, so do not depend on a single 24-hour broadcast for a complete platform archive. If a complete recording matters, plan a separate local recording and verify that it is growing and intact.

YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If viewers need to rewind the broadcast, set expectations accordingly and consider whether a continuous stream is the right format.
Do YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings make Wirecast unattended?
No. YouTube’s stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop controls for encoder streams. These govern how the event responds to the encoder; they do not establish that Wirecast or the computer will restart after a crash, reboot, or power loss. A setup that starts and stops correctly still needs a plan for failures elsewhere in the chain.
