First check whether the black bars are already visible in the video file. If they are, crop or reframe the file before streaming; YouTube cannot remove borders baked into its pixels. If the file looks normal but the Live Control Room preview has bars, check your encoder’s output canvas and how it fits or crops the source. For a conventional horizontal stream, YouTube recommends a 16:9 output.
Find out where the black bars are coming from
Open the original recording outside YouTube and view it at its native dimensions. This simple check separates two common cases:
- Bars are visible in the recording itself: they are part of the video image. Crop, resize, or reframe the media before sending it to the encoder.
- The recording fills its frame, but the live preview has bars: inspect the encoder’s output canvas and the source’s fit, fill, or crop behavior.
- The preview looks right, but playback differs by device: YouTube’s player adapts to the video’s aspect ratio and the viewer’s device, so presentation can vary. A border is not automatically an encoder fault.
YouTube recommends avoiding black padding embedded directly in a video because it can interfere with the player’s dynamic sizing. Its player behavior and aspect-ratio guidance are described in YouTube Help’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.
Set the output to the shape you actually want
For a standard horizontal stream
Use a 16:9 output canvas and make sure the source fills it without unwanted black borders. YouTube identifies 16:9 as the standard computer aspect ratio and recommends it for best live video quality. Common 16:9 output sizes are 1920×1080, 1280×720, and 854×480, as listed in YouTube’s aspect-ratio guidance.

Menu names differ between encoders and pre-recorded streaming services, so look for settings corresponding to canvas or output resolution and the source’s fit, fill, or crop mode. Do not assume a particular menu path applies to your application.
If the source is vertical or another non-16:9 shape
A vertical or nonstandard video is not necessarily defective. YouTube’s player can adapt to different video shapes. If you want it to fill a horizontal 16:9 frame, choose a layout deliberately: cropping or enlarging may cut off edges, while placing the full source on a designed background preserves the entire image but may leave space around it. Those are creative trade-offs, not a YouTube-mandated fix.

YouTube also describes horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 formats for applicable Live Control Room workflows, including a center-cropped vertical option. Choosing vertical output is a presentation decision; it will not remove bars already baked into the video. See YouTube’s live-streaming overview.
Check the video and encoder before starting
- Correct the source if needed. If the bars are in the file, crop or reframe the image in your editing or streaming workflow, then verify the resulting video before using it.
- Match the output canvas to the intended stream. For conventional horizontal viewing, use 16:9. Confirm the output resolution and that the source is fitted or cropped as intended.
- Check geometry settings. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends square pixels and progressive scan. Treat these as checks, not an assumption that either is necessarily causing the bars. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.
- Preview in Live Control Room before going public. Check the composition and monitor stream quality. YouTube recommends testing the setup and checking the preview; see YouTube’s live-streaming tips and live stream settings guidance.
