If OBS is dropping frames because your connection cannot sustain its configured bitrate, enable Settings → Advanced → Network → Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). OBS will lower the outgoing bitrate when the connection struggles, which can help keep the stream moving—but image quality may fall, and the setting does not fix the underlying network problem.
What dynamic bitrate does—and what it does not do
OBS’s dynamic bitrate option adjusts the bitrate it sends when the connection to the streaming server cannot keep up. Instead of continuing to send data at a rate the connection cannot sustain, OBS can lower that rate to reduce dropped frames. The tradeoff is reduced image quality: a lower bitrate gives the video less data to represent detail and motion.
OBS describes the option as a way to manage congestion, not a cure for its cause. It is useful when you need continuity and cannot resolve the connection issue before or during a stream. If the connection is persistently unstable, find and address the cause as well.
Turn on the setting in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and select Settings.
- Choose Advanced, then open the Network section.
- Tick Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). The label and availability can vary by installed OBS version; OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance uses this label.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Run a test stream or monitor a real stream’s connection status and dropped-frames counter. If the counter still rises, continue diagnosing the connection rather than assuming the option has fixed it.
The adjustment concerns OBS’s outgoing stream. It is distinct from a streaming platform’s handling of the stream after it arrives.

Diagnose dropped frames in a useful order
OBS distinguishes connection-related dropped frames from other performance issues. A rising dropped-frames counter, especially alongside a yellow or red connection indicator, points to an unstable route to the server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Use this sequence to narrow down the problem.
1. Check the ingest server
Try a different server or ingest point offered by your streaming destination. A poor route to one server can cause problems even when other internet activity appears normal. For Twitch on Windows, OBS’s guidance mentions TwitchTest as a way to identify a server with a better quality score; this is a diagnostic option, not a guarantee that changing servers will solve every issue.

2. Set a bitrate your upload can sustain
OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a good starting point for a streaming bitrate. Treat that as a heuristic, not a safe-rate guarantee: upload speed can vary, and a brief speed test does not establish that your connection can hold a rate throughout a live event. Choose a bitrate based on stable upload capacity and the streaming service’s current ingest limits.
Platform guidance is also specific to the codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s current encoder guidance, checked in 2026, lists H.264 at 1080p60 with a 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate. That is YouTube guidance for that format, not a target for every platform or every connection. Test with your intended settings before going live.

3. Test whether the issue is service-specific
If practical, compare a test stream to another destination. If one destination has trouble and another does not, the result can help identify whether the route or service may be involved. It does not, by itself, resolve a service-specific connection issue.
4. Check local network settings and software
- On Windows, OBS suggests trying Network Optimizations and TCP pacing.
- Check that OBS’s Bind to IP setting is Default. Try IPv4-only only as a diagnostic; if it makes no difference, return to the IPv4/IPv6 default.
- Check whether firewall or security software, a VPN, bundled network software, or outdated network drivers could be interfering. These are possible causes, not proof that any one is responsible.
5. Check the physical connection when relevant
OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If you use Wi-Fi, testing over Ethernet can help determine whether the wireless connection is part of the problem. A faulty cable, router, modem, network card, or other network device can also contribute; replacing hardware blindly may not help if the cause is elsewhere. Contact your ISP before replacing equipment if you are unsure.

6. Contact your ISP if the issue persists
If the preceding checks do not resolve persistent connection problems, contact your internet provider. Congestion or changes outside your home network may be beyond your control.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Dynamic bitrate is not viewer-side adaptive quality
OBS’s dynamic bitrate changes the broadcaster’s outgoing bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. YouTube’s separate platform-side processing transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats so viewers can watch on different devices and connections. One acts before the stream reaches the platform; the other happens after ingest. Platform transcoding does not prevent OBS from having trouble delivering the source stream.

Viewer buffering can depend on a viewer’s location, device, and connection. OBS notes that lowering bitrate, resolution, or frame rate may be a reasonable reach-versus-quality tradeoff, particularly on platforms that do not offer transcoding. Follow the destination’s current encoder guidance and test a representative stream with the audio and motion you expect to use.
Common symptoms and what to try
| What you see | What it may indicate | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames rise; connection indicator turns yellow or red | The connection to the remote server is unstable, or the set bitrate is beyond what it can sustain. | Enable the congestion option, test a different ingest server, and choose a bitrate based on stable upload capacity. |
| Dynamic bitrate is enabled, but dropped frames continue | The setting has not removed the underlying connection fault. | Work through the server, upload, local software and network, physical connection, and ISP checks above. |
| OBS reports a healthy connection, but viewers buffer | The issue may be on the viewer’s device or connection, or relate to platform delivery. | Check the platform’s stream-health messages and test appropriate resolution, frame-rate, and bitrate choices for the audience. |
Or let it run in the cloud
Dynamic bitrate is for an OBS stream you operate from your own setup. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
