To start a YouTube stream from OBS, create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy its server URL and stream key into OBS, then start the encoder. For a scheduled broadcast, check the preview and click Go live in Live Control Room unless Auto-start is enabled. A 24/7 setup needs more than a launch sequence: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as replays, so record locally if the archive matters. The cited YouTube guidance does not promise that one broadcast will stay live indefinitely.
Before you start: check channel eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to stream live. Its stated minimum age for live streaming is 16. Confirm that live streaming is enabled on the channel before configuring OBS; otherwise the encoder can be ready while the channel is not eligible. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Create or schedule the broadcast in Live Control Room
In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room. Choose the workflow that fits your launch:
| Workflow | When to use it | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Stream now | You are setting up a broadcast to begin without advance scheduling. | Configure the stream in the Stream workflow and connect OBS. |
| Schedule stream | You want to promote the broadcast in advance. | Use Manage → Schedule stream. Scheduling provides a shareable watch URL and lets viewers set reminders. For the scheduled event, send the feed from OBS, check the preview, then select Go live. |
Set an accurate title, description, visibility, and other event details. Select or create the stream settings and key. If you are preparing a recurring continuous channel, verify the selected event and settings before launch rather than assuming that a previous event’s configuration applies.

Connect OBS to YouTube
- Get the connection details. In Live Control Room, open the stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key.
- Enter them in OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose the YouTube service or preset if available, and enter the key. If you configure the connection manually, put the URL from Live Control Room in the server field and the key in the stream-key field.
- Prefer RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP. If entering the server address manually, use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming that an RTMP address is encrypted. See YouTube’s encoder connection guidance.
Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in a screenshot, recording, or public tutorial. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; update OBS with the replacement key before sending the feed again.

Set OBS output to match YouTube’s guidance and your connection
YouTube’s recommended encoder settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Use the current YouTube encoder settings table for your exact combination instead of applying one bitrate to every stream.
H.264 examples from YouTube’s recommendations
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations, not guaranteed bandwidth requirements. Leave headroom for network variation and test your actual upload capacity. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Match the output to the motion and detail in your content: fast-moving gameplay can make compression limits more noticeable than a static scene.

Before relying on the stream, run a test with representative audio and motion and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. See YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for settings beyond the H.264 examples above.
Start the broadcast and verify it is live
- In OBS, start streaming so YouTube begins receiving the encoder feed.
- For a scheduled event, wait for the Live Control Room preview to appear. Check the picture and audio, then click Go live.
- For a stream being set up now, follow the controls and status shown in Live Control Room; confirm that the event is live rather than assuming that an active OBS encoder means the public broadcast has started.
- When ending the event, use End Stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content from OBS, following the current event controls.
Check the event’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings before relying on an unattended start or stop. Those settings can change whether starting or stopping the encoder also starts or ends the YouTube broadcast. YouTube’s event-preparation tips recommend setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start; these are preparation recommendations, not a 24/7 uptime guarantee. See YouTube’s live-stream preparation tips.

Plan separately for the live feed and its replay
YouTube Help warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but the warning means an over-12-hour replay is not assured. It is an archive caveat—not documentation that every 12-hour stream will stop, nor a stated maximum duration for a live broadcast. YouTube does not promise in the cited guidance that one stream will remain live indefinitely or that a 24/7 broadcast will be divided into reliable replay segments.
If a replay matters, make a local recording and plan where it will be stored. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as backup; it does not specify a required device or capacity. Allow enough storage for the recording duration and quality you choose, and check that OBS is actually recording before leaving a long broadcast unattended. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Keep a long-running OBS stream operational
A continuous broadcast depends on the computer, encoder, network connection, and YouTube ingest continuing to work. YouTube’s cited setup guidance supports testing and monitoring, but does not provide a complete 24/7 failover procedure. Plan how you will notice an interruption and how you will restart the encoder and confirm the broadcast is live again; an active OBS window alone is not proof that viewers can see the stream.
- Test the intended resolution, frame rate, audio, and representative content before launch.
- Check Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health indicators at launch and during operation.
- Keep the stream key private and have an owner or manager reset it if it is compromised.
- Record locally if you need a dependable copy of the program, then check that the recording is being written and that the destination has room.
- Decide how you will respond to a dropped connection, encoder failure, or YouTube interruption; do not assume that a single event or replay will recover itself.
Troubleshooting common launch problems
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live broadcast. | Channel verification, recent live-stream restrictions, or age eligibility. | Confirm the channel meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements before troubleshooting OBS. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed. | Server URL, stream key, or selected service in OBS. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room. If the key was reset or exposed, replace it in OBS. |
| The scheduled event is not publicly live. | Encoder feed may be present, but the event may still need the preview check and manual Go live action. | Check the preview and event status in Live Control Room, and review Auto-start settings. |
| Video quality or stream health is unstable. | Bitrate may be too high for available upload capacity, or output settings may not match the current YouTube recommendation. | Test upload capacity, use the current table for the selected codec and output, leave network headroom, and inspect stream health. |
| The replay is missing after a very long broadcast. | Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as archives. | Use a local recording as backup; the replay warning does not establish that the live event itself was stopped. |
Or let it run in the cloud
