Choose Mux to build live video into an application through an API, Dacast if you need a managed business-video platform, AWS MediaLive for configurable cloud encoding, or Amazon IVS for AWS-native low-latency and interactive streaming. These are different kinds of products, not interchangeable all-in-one replacements.
If your specific need is to keep prerecorded video looping on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it runs from the cloud, supports uploads as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a free first day.
Start by identifying what Wowza does in your setup
“Wowza alternative” can refer to replacing an encoder, adding live video to an app, managing a video library and player, or assembling a cloud delivery pipeline. Before comparing vendors, write down the role Wowza currently fills and which parts of the workflow you expect the replacement to handle.
- Encoding and processing: Do you send a source feed to a service that creates streaming outputs?
- Ingest and playback APIs: Does your software create streams and manage playback programmatically?
- Publishing and management: Do you need a hosted player, content controls, recording, analytics, or monetization?
- Delivery architecture: Are you prepared to configure and operate multiple cloud services?
- Always-on YouTube playback: Is the actual job to loop uploaded video on YouTube, rather than encode a camera or event feed?
Those answers narrow the candidates more reliably than a generic feature checklist. Also confirm how much delay your use case can tolerate: a one-way presentation, an auction, and an interactive game stream can have very different latency needs.

Mux Video: live video for an application
Mux is the clearest fit here for a development team that wants to integrate live video into its own product. Mux documents RTMP ingest compatible with common broadcast software and hardware, API-created live stream objects, playback, and live input-health metrics. It also offers a low-latency option for use cases where audience interaction matters. See Mux’s live video documentation for current implementation details.
Mux’s pricing documentation separates input, storage, and delivery charges. Live is offered on Plus and Premium quality up to 1080p. The pricing documentation describes 100,000 delivery minutes per month before delivery charges, but confirm that allowance against the plan and current rate card you select. It also shows a starting live input rate of $0.025 per minute for Plus quality up to 720p; that is an input starting rate, not the total cost of a stream. Rates vary by quality, resolution, and volume, and available plans include pay-as-you-go and credit-based options. Check the current Mux pricing before estimating.

Dacast: a managed-platform candidate
Dacast may suit a business looking for a managed service spanning live and on-demand video. Wowza’s comparison describes white-label controls, monetization, content management, developer tools, embedded HTML5 playback, analytics, recording, and 24/7 support. It also flags potential limitations involving low latency, DRM, protocols, WebRTC, audience caps, and social simulcasting.
Those details come from a competitor comparison, not a current first-party Dacast specification. Treat them as questions to validate, not confirmed plan promises: check Dacast’s own current documentation for which features, limits, and prices apply to the package you are considering. No current Dacast plan price is established here.

AWS describes MediaLive as a cloud-based, broadcast-grade video processing service for real-time encoding. It supports configurable inputs and outputs. AWS also documents Elemental Link HD and UHD devices as one way to provide a physical video input; that does not mean every workflow requires a separate encoder or that any particular encoder will work without checking compatibility.

MediaLive is an encoding component rather than automatically a finished portal. AWS’s example end-to-end design combines MediaLive with MediaPackage for packaging and CloudFront for delivery. That architecture can package adaptive-bitrate outputs as HLS, DASH, and CMAF, and documents redundant inputs and DRM integrations. It is a better fit for a team willing to configure and operate cloud services than for someone seeking a ready-made branded publishing interface.
AWS bills MediaLive according to running inputs, outputs, and add-ons. Input charges depend on codec, bitrate, and resolution; output charges also depend on codec, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate. A running channel may accrue charges even when it is not receiving content or producing outputs. AWS advertises up to 75% savings for certain 12-month reservations compared with on-demand pricing, subject to reservation terms. This is an AWS-published maximum, not an independent cost comparison. Review the current MediaLive pricing and reservation conditions for your region and configuration.
Amazon IVS: AWS-native low-latency and interactive workflows
Amazon IVS is worth evaluating when an application needs AWS-native low-latency or real-time streaming. Its billing separates video input and viewer output; real-time usage also includes participant hours. Output charges vary with resolution and billing region, so the audience’s likely locations matter to the estimate.

AWS’s pricing documentation describes input and output free-tier allowances for new AWS accounts during their initial 12 months, with channel-type limits. This is a limited introductory allowance, not a general ongoing free plan. Check the current IVS pricing and service documentation before designing around a particular channel type or allowance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare the options against one realistic workflow
Before migrating, build a short requirements sheet and test the candidate against it. Vendor terms and capabilities change; verify current limits and formats in first-party documentation, especially for codecs, protocol support, and plan entitlements.
- Product shape and control: Decide whether you want a managed portal, an API component, or infrastructure your team assembles and operates.
- Latency and interaction: Set an acceptable delay based on whether the stream is one-way or needs responsive audience participation.
- Ingest and playback: Confirm the source encoder’s output and the player requirements for viewers, including supported protocols and formats.
- Scale and resilience: Estimate concurrent channels and viewers, decide whether you need redundant inputs, and establish who handles monitoring and recovery.
- Security and monetization: Check DRM, signed playback, geographic restrictions, paywalls, and advertising requirements against the actual plan.
- Event and VOD workflow: Check whether you need recording, archives, replay, analytics, captions, or scheduling, and which service provides each function.
- Operations: Account for setup, integrations, cloud configuration, support, and ongoing ownership—not only the encoding line item.
Estimate total cost using the right billing units
Do not compare one provider’s input-minute rate with another provider’s per-hour or viewer-delivery charges. Calculate the same workload for each candidate: number of channels, hours running, input quality and bitrate, output renditions, storage duration, viewer minutes or bandwidth, audience regions, and support or engineering effort.
| Service | Cost components to model | What the published pricing indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Mux | Live input, stored video, and delivery | Pricing documentation describes 100,000 monthly delivery minutes before delivery charges and a $0.025-per-minute starting live input rate for Plus quality up to 720p; confirm plan eligibility and current rates. |
| AWS MediaLive | Running inputs, outputs, and add-ons | Costs depend on input/output configuration; a running channel can charge while idle. AWS states up to 75% savings on selected rates with certain 12-month reservations, subject to terms. |
| Amazon IVS | Video input and viewer output; participant hours for real-time usage | Output is region- and resolution-dependent. New AWS accounts may have limited first-12-month allowances under the stated channel-type terms. |
| Dacast | Current plan and any usage or feature limits | Current first-party plan pricing is not established here; confirm directly with Dacast. |
| Wowza Streaming Engine | Plan, instance, and channel allowance | Wowza’s current pricing page lists $195 per month for Basic Monthly and $295 for one month of streaming, each with one instance and up to 10 concurrent transcoded channels; check applicability on the current Wowza pricing page. |
These are provider-published figures and billing descriptions, not like-for-like quotes. Prices and included allowances can change, and your actual cost depends on the chosen configuration and usage.
