FFmpeg YouTube Stream “Broken Pipe”: Reconnect Without Restarting the Playlist

FFmpeg can retry certain HTTP input failures, but no reconnect flag guarantees YouTube will resume the same playlist item and position. Diagnose the failed side, choose targeted retry options, and set limits.

FFmpeg can retry some failed HTTP inputs, but reconnecting is not the same as restoring a YouTube playlist to the exact item and playback position. First identify whether “Broken pipe” occurred while FFmpeg was reading its input or writing its output. The reconnect options below address HTTP input failures; they are a starting point, not a guaranteed fix for every command or playlist.

First identify which side of FFmpeg failed

A “Broken pipe” message alone does not establish that the HTTP input needs reconnecting. FFmpeg reads from its input and writes to an output; an error while writing to a destination may have a different cause and will not necessarily be fixed by input reconnect options.

  • If the input read failed: identify the input protocol and whether the failure was a disconnect before EOF, an unexpected EOF, a TCP/TLS connection error, or an HTTP error response. Then select matching input options.
  • If the output write failed: inspect the destination, downstream consumer, and surrounding output errors. Input reconnect options may not apply.

When diagnosing, keep the full command and surrounding log lines, but remove URL tokens and other secrets before sharing them. Record ffmpeg -version and identify whether “playlist” means a YouTube queue, an HLS or DASH manifest, a local concat list, or a sequence managed by a wrapper. These details affect what a retry can preserve.

HTTP reconnect options and what they do

FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol has distinct controls for different failure conditions. Options for an input generally go before that input’s -i URL. The FFmpeg protocol manual documents their behavior; check the manual and your installed build before relying on any option or default: FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Option Use Important qualification
-reconnect 1 Retry a disconnect before EOF. It does not promise to restore a playlist managed by YouTube or another layer.
-reconnect_at_eof 1 Treat EOF as an error and attempt reconnection; the documentation describes this as useful for live or endless streams. EOF may be normal for a finite file. This option does not mean “resume the playlist where it left off.”
-reconnect_on_network_error 1 Retry network errors such as TCP/TLS connection failures. It addresses connection errors, not every failure after a connection is established.
-reconnect_on_http_error 4xx,5xx Retry the selected HTTP response codes or code groups. Do not retry every status indiscriminately. Authentication failures, invalid URLs, or unavailable media may not be fixed by retrying.
-reconnect_streamed 1 Allow reconnects for streamed or non-seekable inputs. Reconnection behavior can depend on whether the server supports the required resumed request.

The manual says that when reconnect_at_eof is enabled, EOF is treated as an error and causes reconnection, which is useful for live or endless streams. That describes FFmpeg’s HTTP input handling, not YouTube playlist continuity.

Try a bounded input-reconnect configuration

For an HTTP input, this is an illustrative starting shape, not a tested command or universal fix:

ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_delay_max 30 -i "$INPUT_URL" ...

Put the options before the affected -i. Replace ... with the rest of your actual command; preserve its existing mapping, encoding, and output settings. Add only the flags that match the observed failure.

  1. For a disconnect before EOF: start with -reconnect 1. Add -reconnect_streamed 1 if the input is streamed or non-seekable.
  2. For an endless input that reports EOF during an interruption: consider -reconnect_at_eof 1. Avoid it for a finite input where EOF is expected.
  3. For a TCP/TLS connection failure: consider -reconnect_on_network_error 1.
  4. For an HTTP response failure: select relevant statuses with -reconnect_on_http_error, for example 4xx,5xx only when retrying those categories is appropriate. A narrower status selection may be safer. FFmpeg documents that it honors a server-provided Retry-After delay by default when present.
  5. Set a retry budget: choose limits for maximum delay, attempt count, and total retry delay where supported. A process that must eventually alert or exit should not retry forever without a monitoring plan.
  6. Verify support: run ffmpeg -version and check your installed build’s available HTTP protocol options. Do not assume that current trunk defaults apply to every release or packaged build.

FFmpeg’s current trunk HTTP implementation lists defaults of 120 seconds for reconnect_delay_max, unlimited retries (reconnect_max_retries of -1), and 256 seconds for reconnect_delay_total_max. These are version-specific implementation defaults, not recommended values for every installation. See the FFmpeg trunk HTTP implementation; inspect your installed version rather than treating trunk as a universal default.

Why reconnect may not preserve the playlist position

HTTP reconnect concerns fetching an HTTP resource again. FFmpeg’s implementation tracks an offset and attempts to seek back to it; streamed or non-seekable inputs have a separate opt-in control. That mechanism does not establish that a server will accept or honor a resumed request, nor does it reconstruct a queue managed by YouTube or a wrapper.

So the outcome depends on what the playlist actually is, its URL or manifest type, whether the input is seekable, the server’s behavior, and your FFmpeg build. A retry might continue reading a resource, restart or fail, or leave a higher-level playlist at a different item. The documented options do not guarantee the same item and playback position after a process restart.

Troubleshoot the failure systematically

  1. Locate the failing operation. Read the log lines around “Broken pipe” and determine whether the failed operation was an input read or output write.
  2. Classify the input failure. Look for EOF, a network connection error, an HTTP status, or a disconnect before EOF. Match options to that condition instead of enabling every retry flag.
  3. Check seekability and input type. Establish whether the URL points to an ordinary resource, an endless live source, or a streamed/non-seekable input, and whether the playlist is managed by FFmpeg or another service.
  4. Check retry behavior and limits. Confirm that your build supports the chosen options, set deliberate delay and attempt limits, and review whether a server’s Retry-After response affects timing.
  5. Test continuity at the right layer. If the HTTP input reconnects but the wrong playlist item plays, investigate the playlist or wrapper’s state handling. HTTP retry flags do not provide that state management.

For help diagnosing a case, share the redacted command, FFmpeg version, input protocol or manifest type, and the surrounding log lines. Remove signed URL parameters, stream keys, and other credentials.
