Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Set your encoder’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends that interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. If YouTube still reports keyframes that are too frequent or too infrequent, check the frame-count conversion, the stream’s actual output, and—if your encoder exposes the setting—whether it is using a closed GOP.
What YouTube’s 2-second recommendation means
A keyframe interval is the time between keyframes in the encoded video. YouTube’s live encoder settings recommend 2 seconds and say not to exceed 4 seconds. Its error guidance asks creators to send keyframes every 2 seconds. An interval longer than 4 seconds can cause buffering, according to YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and live streaming error messages.
Encoders may express this interval as seconds, frames, or GOP size. When the control uses frames, convert the target using the frame rate of the encoded stream: two seconds multiplied by frames per second. YouTube gives 60 frames at 30 fps as its example; at 60 fps, the same calculation is 120 frames.
| Encoded frame rate | Frames in 2 seconds |
|---|---|
| 30 fps | 60 frames (YouTube’s documented example) |
| 60 fps | 120 frames (calculated from the 2-second target) |
How to correct the keyframe warning
- Find the control in the encoder that is sending the stream. Look for a setting called keyframe interval, keyframe frequency, or GOP size. Names and units vary, so use your encoder’s own documentation if the setting is unclear; YouTube does not specify a universal menu path.
- Set a fixed 2-second interval. If the field accepts seconds, enter 2. If it accepts frames, use two times the encoded frames per second—for example, 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps.
- Recheck after changing frame rate. The frame count needed for two seconds changes with frame rate. Confirm the interval against the frame rate actually being encoded, not just a different value elsewhere in the setup.
- Check what YouTube is receiving. If the warning remains despite the configured value, review YouTube’s stream-health message. YouTube notes that ingestion errors can result in incorrect GOP sizes, so the setting shown in the encoder may not tell the whole story.
- Use a closed GOP if the encoder offers the option. YouTube says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. This control is not available in every encoder; do not assume an unexposed option can be changed.
- Test and monitor. Test before the event and monitor stream health while live. YouTube recommends both practices; a test using similar audio and video motion can help catch a warning before an important broadcast.
Which other encoder settings matter?
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS live encoder settings list H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended 2-second keyframe frequency with a 4-second maximum. These are separate settings: a keyframe-frequency warning calls for checking keyframe spacing, not changing codec or bitrate unless YouTube reports a separate problem. See YouTube’s current encoder settings for its full recommendations.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube supports encoder-based streaming through software applications and standalone hardware encoders; its encoder setup guide includes Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) as an open-source software example. The general keyframe correction is the same, but this guidance does not establish a current, encoder-specific menu path. There is no documented reason to replace an encoder simply because this warning appears.
Common causes and what to check
- The interval is too long: Convert the target to frames for the stream’s current frame rate, or set 2 seconds directly if the control is time-based. YouTube warns that intervals over 4 seconds can cause buffering.
- The interval is too short: Set the control to the recommended 2 seconds rather than guessing at a frame count. The target remains two seconds regardless of frame rate; only its frame-count equivalent changes.
- The frame rate changed: Recalculate the GOP/frame count and verify the encoded output. A count chosen for one frame rate represents a different duration at another.
- YouTube’s warning persists after a correct configuration: Check stream health for ingestion errors that may affect the GOP size, then check for a closed-GOP control if available.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not replace the need to configure a keyframe interval correctly in an encoder for a stream you send yourself, and it streams uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed.
