One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchYou can run OBS on an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) virtual machine and send its output to YouTube, but installing OBS is only one part of a dependable 24/7 setup. You also need a compatible Linux installation, a way to provide OBS with a display session on a headless server, enough CPU and network capacity for your chosen settings, and monitoring that detects a stalled stream. OCI does not make a stream uninterrupted by itself.
This guide lays out the decisions and configuration sequence. It does not provide copy-and-paste Linux install or service commands: the current OBS Linux page available for this guide did not establish commands for a specific Ubuntu release or a validated headless-display method. Confirm those details against your exact OS before installing or automating OBS.
Before you start: decide whether OBS on a VPS fits
An OCI VPS running OBS makes sense if you need OBS scenes, filters, transitions, or other encoder controls and are prepared to maintain a Linux server. OBS is desktop software; on a headless VPS, you must also establish and maintain a display/session for it. That requirement is separate from installing the application.
If your goal is simply to keep prerecorded video looping as a YouTube live stream, OBS on a VPS may add unnecessary setup and maintenance. YouTube’s official encoder directory lists Gyre as a service for 24/7 prerecorded streams, but the listing does not establish its current price or independent reliability. StreamNeo is another YouTube-only cloud option described below.

What you need before creating the server
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements before planning the launch.
- A YouTube live stream destination and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and do not paste the key into a public script, screenshot, or repository.
- An OCI account and a Linux image whose OBS installation instructions you have checked for that exact release. OBS’s official Linux installation instructions are distribution-dependent; verify the applicable steps rather than assuming a package command works on every image.
- A realistic workload estimate: output resolution, frame rate, codec, scene complexity, and whether the stream is a static image, a video loop, or a composed scene. These choices affect CPU use and network demand.
Create an OCI instance that can sustain your workload
In the OCI Console, create a compute instance and select a Linux image, shape, boot volume, and network configuration. OCI offers shapes with different CPU, memory, and networking resources; flexible shapes allow CPU and memory selection, and network bandwidth scales with OCPUs. Eligibility and capacity for Always Free resources can vary by shape and region, so check the current OCI Free Tier terms and regional availability instead of assuming a free instance will encode a particular format.
Size by evidence, not by the word “free”
There is no established minimum OCI shape for a given OBS resolution in the available evidence. Encoding load depends on the encoder implementation, codec, frame rate, resolution, scene, and hardware acceleration available to the chosen instance. Start with a shape you can test, then observe CPU and memory while sending the actual scene at the intended settings. If the encoder cannot keep up, reduce the workload or move to a larger or better-suited shape.

Keep network rules narrow
The stream is sent outbound from the VPS to YouTube. You normally need inbound SSH access to administer the server; opening arbitrary inbound ports is not what makes an outbound encoder stream work. Configure only the required administration access, and check both OCI security rules and the Linux image’s host firewall behavior against Oracle’s network security rules documentation.
Install OBS and solve the headless-display requirement
Use the current OBS instructions for the exact Linux distribution and version installed on your instance. The official OBS Linux page is the starting point, but it does not establish a single command that is correct for every OCI Linux image. Confirm package availability, dependencies, and supported installation method for your release before running commands.

Next, verify how OBS will obtain a display/session when no desktop user is logged in and no physical monitor is attached. A VPS can be running while OBS has no usable display, or while its graphical process has exited. Choose a headless-display and process-launch approach only after validating it for your OS and OBS build; do not treat an unverified desktop workaround or service command as a reliable 24/7 recipe.
Configure YouTube output in OBS
Once OBS is installed and its display/session is available, configure the YouTube stream destination using the stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room. Keep the key private, and use RTMPS where offered for encrypted transport. YouTube’s current encoder settings specify recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the row for the actual output format rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

H.264 SDR reference settings
For SDR H.264, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds (no more than four seconds), frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its current guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; the corresponding listed minimums are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a promise that a particular OCI instance can encode or deliver those settings reliably.
YouTube’s table also gives separate bitrate recommendations for AV1 and H.265. Confirm that the OBS build and OCI instance support the codec you intend to use, then follow the matching YouTube table entry. YouTube transcodes incoming streams for viewer playback, so the encoder’s incoming format and each viewer’s playback rendition are distinct.

Test the stream before relying on it
- Use a private or unlisted test broadcast. Start the encoder and confirm that YouTube receives the feed in Live Control Room before making a stream public or scheduling an event.
- Test representative content. Include the motion, audio, scenes, and transitions expected in the real broadcast. A still image can use different resources from a moving video or complex scene.
- Check available upload capacity. YouTube says total outgoing stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% extra capacity. For a 10 Mbps stream, that guidance implies planning for at least 12 Mbps of sustained available upload. This is a planning calculation, not a guarantee for any OCI region or network route.
- Inspect both ends. Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and the public watch page when applicable; monitor audio and video during operation. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing the setup and checking playback.
- Allow lead time for scheduled events. YouTube recommends starting an encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. Keep that margin in the runbook for a planned launch.
Keep the broadcast running—and detect failures
For a continuous stream, plan for both process failure and instance/network interruption. A running VM is not proof that OBS is encoding, that its display is available, or that YouTube is still receiving the stream. Verify a restart and recovery procedure with your chosen headless-session setup before depending on it; this guide does not validate a particular Linux supervisor command or guarantee that a GUI process will recover correctly after reboot.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room on a schedule and after any server change or restart.
- Monitor the OBS process, encoder load, memory, and outgoing network behavior using tools appropriate to your Linux image.
- Document how to restore the display/session, restart OBS, and recheck the stream key and YouTube ingest status without exposing the key.
- Have a response plan for an OCI instance stop, regional capacity issue, network interruption, or YouTube-side disconnect. Automatic process restart cannot prevent all of these events.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| OBS will not install or launch | Distribution/version-specific packages or dependencies | Recheck OBS’s current Linux directions for the exact image release and confirm dependencies before retrying. |
| OBS starts but shows a blank screen or cannot create output | Headless display/session or permissions | Confirm the validated display/session method is active for the user running OBS; installing OBS alone does not create a display. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Stream destination/key, outbound connectivity, or YouTube eligibility | Check the Live Control Room setup, confirm the key was entered correctly and remains private, and verify outbound network access. |
| Stream health reports bitrate or connection trouble | Insufficient or variable upload capacity | Measure sustained outbound capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; test again with representative content. |
| Video stutters or the encoder falls behind | CPU or encoder workload too high for the shape | Inspect resource use during the actual scene; lower resolution, frame rate, or encoder load, or test a more capable shape. |
| The VM is up but the channel is offline | OBS process, display/session, network, or YouTube ingest has failed | Check each layer separately, restore OBS with the tested recovery procedure, then confirm receipt in Live Control Room. |
Costs and the cloud alternative
OCI costs depend on the selected compute shape, storage, region, and applicable account eligibility; consult Oracle’s current Free Tier information and pricing before deploying. A free-eligible instance is not evidence that a workload can encode a target quality or run without interruption.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want prerecorded video looping on YouTube rather than managing OBS and a headless Linux session, StreamNeo is a purpose-built option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an OCI Always Free VM guarantee a 24/7 YouTube stream?
No. The stream must be tested on the selected shape and monitored; a powered-on VM does not guarantee a healthy OBS-to-YouTube broadcast.
