To stream a recorded sermon as a YouTube event, schedule an encoder livestream in YouTube Studio, set its title and thumbnail, then send the recording to its stream URL and key through an encoder. YouTube lets you reuse a previous stream’s settings, which helps keep a church’s branding consistent—but the details are editable, not permanently locked. Test the scheduled event and playback before service time.
Choose a livestream or a scheduled video
Use a scheduled livestream if the congregation should gather on a live event page, use live chat, or receive the opportunity to set a reminder. Use an ordinary scheduled upload if the sermon only needs to become public at a chosen time and the live-event experience is unnecessary.
| Option | Best for | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled encoder livestream | A live-event page, live chat, and the chance for viewers to select “Notify me.” | An encoder must send the recording as a feed, and someone should test and monitor the broadcast. |
| Scheduled video upload | Publishing the sermon at a chosen date and time without presenting it as a live event. | It does not create the same live-event experience. YouTube’s scheduling steps are at Schedule video publish time. |
A scheduled stream may appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds, and viewers can choose “Notify me.” YouTube’s guidance for creating encoder streams is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Check channel eligibility before planning the first service
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. The minimum age for live streaming is 16. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so complete setup well before the service rather than on the day. See Get started with live streaming and YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Create and schedule the YouTube event
- Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream.
- Choose a new stream or reuse settings: Reuse settings copies the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key. A new stream is appropriate when you need a distinct configuration or fresh stream settings.
- Review the copied details: Check the date, title, description, audience and other event details. Do not assume the reused title or key is right for this service. You can edit stream details when creating, scheduling, or editing the stream.
- Save the event and verify its watch page: Check the displayed event details before sharing the link with the congregation.
For recurring services, reuse settings can provide a practical template. Keep a house title pattern and thumbnail artwork, then review the sermon name and service date every time. YouTube does not describe this as a permanent metadata lock. Its instructions for reusing and editing settings are in Manage live stream settings.
Set a consistent title and thumbnail
Use a title pattern, then update the service-specific details
A repeatable pattern could be “Sunday Worship | [Sermon title] | [Date] | [Church name].” Keep the stable elements consistent while replacing the sermon title and date for each event. The title and other metadata remain editable, so check the saved event before promoting it.

Upload the custom thumbnail
In YouTube Studio, open the scheduled stream’s details, use the thumbnail control to upload the church’s image, and save. Custom thumbnail access requires a verified account. YouTube recommends a 16:9 image at 3840 × 2160 pixels, at least 640 pixels wide, in JPG or PNG format. Its stated upload limits are 50 MB on desktop and 2 MB for video thumbnails on mobile; limits can vary by device, channel history, and region, so use the limits shown in Studio. A thumbnail change may take time to appear. See Add custom thumbnails on YouTube.
YouTube Studio’s navigation and video-details controls are described in Navigate YouTube Studio. Tags may help with common misspellings, but YouTube says they otherwise play a minimal role in discovery.

Connect an encoder to play the sermon recording
- Get the event’s connection details: In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the scheduled stream.
- Configure the encoder: Paste the URL and key into the corresponding fields in your chosen encoder, following that application’s instructions.
- Select the recording as the source: Use the encoder’s own file-playback or media-source controls to choose the sermon recording. YouTube’s instructions explain how to connect an encoder, but do not specify a universal button or procedure for playing a local video file.
- Protect the key: Treat the stream key as a credential. Do not share it publicly or include it in screenshots or instructions visible to viewers.
The encoder’s file-playback controls, repeat behavior, and other options depend on the software and setup. Confirm in advance that the recording plays through the encoder and that its audio and video reach YouTube’s preview.
Run a preflight and monitor the service
- Work ahead: YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before.
- Check the preview before starting: Confirm the expected video and audio appear in Live Control Room.
- Check viewer access: Open the watch page as a viewer and confirm it is accessible, including on mobile.
- Monitor the broadcast: Watch for audio or video problems while the sermon is streaming.
These timings are YouTube operational recommendations, not guaranteed technical requirements. The full checklist is in YouTube live streaming tips.

End the event and check the replay
When the sermon is over, stop the encoder and end the event in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Check the resulting replay and its metadata after the event; do not assume the archive or its details are correct without reviewing them.
Optional trailer for a scheduled stream
YouTube offers a trailer option for scheduled streams. Its current guidance says eligibility requires more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes; the trailer must be 15 seconds to 3 minutes long. This is optional and not needed to stream the sermon.
