To stream video through Amazon CloudFront, first encode and package it into a delivery format such as HLS, DASH, Smooth Streaming, or CMAF. Then store the packaged files on an origin—often Amazon S3 for video on demand (VOD)—or use a live-video origin such as AWS Elemental MediaPackage or MediaStore. Create a CloudFront distribution for that origin, configure behaviors and caching to match the manifest and segment paths, enable HTTPS, and test playback through the distribution. CloudFront delivers packaged video; it does not encode or package your source recording for you. AWS CloudFront documentation describes the VOD and live architectures.
Choose a VOD or live-streaming architecture
The right setup depends on whether viewers request stored video or a stream being encoded in real time. In either case, CloudFront sits in front of an origin and serves the packaged output. AWS states that an encoder must package video before CloudFront can distribute it.
| Use case | Typical preparation and origin | What CloudFront delivers |
|---|---|---|
| VOD | Package the video with an encoder such as AWS Elemental MediaConvert; store the output on a server or in an S3 bucket. | Manifests and video segments fetched from the origin as viewers request them. |
| Live | Encode the real-time input with AWS Elemental MediaLive, then use MediaStore or MediaPackage for output and origin delivery. | Live manifests and segments. MediaPackage is a path to consider when you need multiple delivery formats. |
These are documented patterns, not a universal recommendation. The appropriate services and configuration depend on your formats, latency needs, access requirements, traffic, geography, and operational constraints. AWS’s overview covers VOD and live streaming with CloudFront.
Choose a format before configuring behaviors
Identify the actual packaging format and the manifest and segment file extensions your encoder or packaging service produces. AWS lists MPEG DASH, Apple HLS, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and CMAF among common formats. CloudFront behaviors must route requests for the paths and extensions your origin actually serves; a configuration for one format is not automatically suitable for another.

Prepare the origin and packaged video
For VOD
- Encode and package the source video with a suitable encoder, such as MediaConvert, so the output includes a manifest and the referenced segments.
- Store the packaged files on an HTTP server or in an S3 bucket. AWS’s S3 tutorial uses S3 as the origin and CloudFront to cache and deliver the objects, fetching an object from S3 when it is not already cached.
- Record the origin hostname and the paths to the manifests and segments. These paths determine the distribution’s origin path and cache behavior patterns.
See AWS’s S3, CloudFront, and Route 53 VOD tutorial for a documented S3-based workflow.
For live video
- Use MediaLive to encode the real-time input.
- Choose MediaStore or a MediaPackage endpoint as the output/origin path described for your workflow. Consider MediaPackage if you require multiple delivery formats.
- Confirm the endpoint hostname, path, output format, and manifest and segment patterns before creating behaviors.
AWS’s CloudFront and AWS Media Services guide describes MediaPackage and MediaStore patterns, including format-specific routes.

Create the distribution and route requests
- Add the origin. In the CloudFront distribution configuration, specify the origin hostname for your S3 bucket, MediaPackage or MediaStore endpoint, or other HTTP origin. Set an origin path only if it matches the directory structure you intend CloudFront to request. For S3, review Origin Access Control so the bucket is not unnecessarily exposed.
- Plan behaviors around the output paths. Add cache behaviors whose path patterns match the manifests and segments. AWS’s MediaPackage examples commonly separate them: HLS can use patterns ending in
*.m3u8for manifests and*.tsfor segments; CMAF uses*.m3u8and*.mp4; DASH uses*.mpdand*.mp4. Match the patterns to the endpoint and format actually in use. - Account for VOD packaging paths. Some MediaPackage VOD paths include the packaging-configuration GUID. Use the path pattern appropriate to the endpoint rather than assuming a top-level manifest pattern will match every request.
- Handle unmatched paths deliberately. AWS’s MediaPackage instructions note that a wildcard
*behavior needs a route. Their example uses a dummy origin so unmatched requests do not get sent to the real MediaPackage endpoint. Follow the applicable pattern for your distribution instead of routing unknown requests to a production origin by accident.
For the detailed MediaPackage behavior examples, refer to AWS’s live streaming setup guide.
Set HTTPS, caching, and query-string handling
Require HTTPS for viewers
AWS’s MediaPackage procedure selects Redirect HTTP to HTTPS for viewer protocol policy. This allows HTTP requests to be redirected to HTTPS rather than serving viewer requests over an unencrypted connection. If you use a custom domain, the S3/CloudFront tutorial describes configuring a Route 53 domain and an AWS Certificate Manager certificate for HTTPS under that domain.

Keep live manifests fresh
For MediaPackage, AWS describes a minimum TTL of five seconds or less to help prevent stale live content. This is a documented configuration consideration, not a guarantee of a particular end-to-end latency. Live manifests change as the stream advances, so cache settings and cache keys must reflect the request behavior of the player and origin.
Forward the query strings the workflow needs
- Live MediaPackage manifests: Include the
mquery string in the cache policy as AWS documents. - LL-HLS blocking playlist requests: Also include
_HLS_msnand_HLS_partwhen using that feature. - VOD manifest filtering: Forward
aws.manifestfilterif your VOD workflow requires manifest filtering.
Do not forward arbitrary query strings by default without considering their effect on cache keys: requests that differ in included query parameters can be treated as different cache entries. Use the parameters required by your format and workflow. AWS documents these MediaPackage settings in its CloudFront live streaming guide.

Protect the origin and control viewer access
Origin authorization and viewer authorization solve different problems. For MediaPackage, AWS recommends header-based CDN authorization between MediaPackage and CloudFront, so requests to the origin are authorized as coming through the CDN. For viewer access, CloudFront supports signed URLs or signed cookies. Choose whether playback is public or restricted and configure the appropriate viewer control separately from origin authorization. For an S3 origin, review Origin Access Control so users do not bypass CloudFront by accessing the bucket directly. AWS outlines CloudFront access approaches in Ways to use CloudFront.
Deploy and verify playback
- Save the distribution configuration and wait until its status is no longer Deploying before testing it. AWS’s MediaPackage procedure specifies this deployment wait.
- Request the manifest through the CloudFront distribution hostname or configured custom domain, using the exact path expected by your behavior.
- Use the player’s network/request view or equivalent diagnostics to confirm that the manifest loads and that its referenced segments are also requested through CloudFront.
- If playback fails, compare each requested path and query string with the configured behavior, origin path, and cache policy. A manifest can load while segment requests fail if the segment route is missing or mismatched.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
| Symptom | Likely issue to check | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| The manifest or video cannot be played through CloudFront. | The content may not have been encoded and packaged, the origin hostname or path may be incorrect, or the behavior may not match the requested object. | Confirm that the origin contains the manifest and segments, then compare the requested URL path with the distribution’s origin path and behavior patterns. |
| The manifest loads, but segments fail. | The distribution may have a manifest behavior but no matching segment behavior, or the segment extension differs from the assumed pattern. | Inspect the manifest’s segment URLs and create or correct a behavior for the actual segment paths and format. |
| Live playback shows stale or out-of-date content. | The live manifest may be cached too long, or the cache key may omit a query parameter required by the MediaPackage workflow. | Review the manifest TTL and include the documented query parameters, such as m; for LL-HLS blocking playlist requests, review _HLS_msn and _HLS_part. |
| LL-HLS blocking playlist requests do not behave as expected. | The cache policy may not include the blocking request parameters. | For the documented LL-HLS feature, include _HLS_msn and _HLS_part in addition to the live-manifest query-string handling. |
| A viewer can reach the origin without going through the intended CDN path. | The origin may allow direct access, or origin authorization may be missing. | For S3, review Origin Access Control. For MediaPackage, review AWS’s recommended header-based CDN authorization; configure viewer signed URLs or cookies separately if playback should be restricted. |
| Requests for unexpected paths reach the live origin. | A wildcard behavior may be routing unmatched requests to the production origin. | Review wildcard routing. AWS’s MediaPackage guidance describes using a dummy origin for unmatched paths. |
Choose a setup based on requirements, not a generic “best” stack
- VOD or live: Stored files and real-time encoding have different preparation and origin requirements.
- One format or several: The manifest and segment behaviors must fit the output formats you deliver.
- Latency: Decide whether ordinary live delivery is sufficient or LL-HLS features are needed, then configure the related manifest requests and caching accordingly.
- Public or private playback: Determine whether viewers need signed URLs or cookies and separately secure the origin.
- Operational complexity and workload: Geography, traffic, bitrate, retention, and scale affect service and cost decisions. The architecture sources do not establish a universally optimal service combination or price for an unspecified workload.
