To give viewers a stable link, schedule one YouTube Live event, share that event’s watch-page URL, and reconnect your encoder to the same event after a restart. A reusable stream key helps keep the encoder configured, but it is not the viewer-facing URL and does not, by itself, preserve a watch page. The link remains usable only if YouTube has not ended the event; YouTube does not document a guarantee that every outage or restart preserves the same page. YouTube’s stream-settings guide and encoder setup guide describe these separate pieces.
Know which URL and settings you need to keep
A YouTube live setup has three distinct parts:
- Scheduled event and watch page: The event viewers open. Schedule the event you plan to promote, then share its URL. YouTube says viewers can share a scheduled stream and set reminders. YouTube’s scheduling and stream settings help explains the controls.
- Server URL: The ingestion address in Live Control Room that your encoder sends video to. Confirm the protocol and server address shown for the event.
- Stream key: An encoder credential that routes the feed to your channel. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like, so keep yours private. A custom reusable key can spare you from reconfiguring the encoder, but it is not the watch-page link. Manage live stream settings.
Keeping a stable viewer link is therefore about returning to the same scheduled event while it remains active—not merely reusing a key or creating another stream with copied settings.
Schedule the event and reconnect to it after a restart
- Create the event: In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then use the Manage area to schedule the stream. Copy the scheduled event’s watch-page URL and share that link.
- Choose the encoder settings: In the event’s Stream tab, select or create a custom stream key if you want the same credential for future encoder sessions. Record the server URL and protocol shown in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password.
- Configure the encoder: Enter the event’s server URL and stream key. Set the source to replay or loop your video, then start sending it. YouTube says the watch page is created when the encoder starts the stream; verify the preview and event status in Live Control Room before telling viewers the stream is back. Encoder setup guide.
- For a restart, reconnect to the same event: Restart the encoder process and send its feed to that event’s configured endpoint and key. Check Live Control Room to confirm the event is still live and the preview has returned. Do not assume that viewers saw an uninterrupted broadcast just because the encoder reconnected.
- Test before relying on the link: While monitoring the event, test both a full encoder restart and a network interruption. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover and checking that the player rolls to the backup. Its guidance also warns that a network disruption can break a stream. YouTube’s streaming tips.
Do not confuse “Reuse settings” with reusing the event
YouTube’s Reuse settings option copies metadata, settings and the stream key into a new stream. The documentation does not say that this new stream keeps the old event’s watch-page URL. Use the original scheduled event when your goal is to bring that event back online, and create a new event only when you intend to share a new link. Reuse settings also copies the event’s auto-start and auto-stop selections, so review those controls and verify the event state in Live Control Room. Stream settings help.
Know when a restart becomes an event-ending problem
YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not specify a universal reconnect grace period or all the conditions under which an event ends. If YouTube has ended the event, do not assume reconnecting with the same key restores the original watch page. Check the event state and test your own restart path in advance. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when stopped, so account for the end-of-event and archive behavior when planning a loop. Encoder setup guide.

Set up the encoder for 4K at 60fps
YouTube’s encoder-settings page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists the following bitrate guidance for 2160p at 60fps. These are YouTube-published settings, not independent performance measurements; check the live page when configuring because platform guidance can change. YouTube encoder settings.

YouTube’s general encoder guidance also specifies RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60fps and a two-second recommended keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Select a codec supported by both your encoder and the chosen YouTube ingestion path; do not infer that every encoder supports all listed codecs.

Leave enough upload capacity
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth about 20% above the total stream bitrate to leave headroom, and notes that other users or devices sharing the network can reduce available upload capacity. For a 35 Mbps H.264 stream, that guidance implies roughly 42 Mbps of upload capacity available to the stream; this is a calculation from YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. SDR and HDR are different configurations
Ordinary 4K/60 SDR does not require HDR. If you specifically want HDR, follow YouTube’s separate HDR/HLS setup requirements for codec, color and segments rather than applying the SDR settings blindly.

Choose an encoder and restart plan
YouTube supports software encoders running on a computer as well as standalone hardware encoders. For a looping 2160p60 feed, compare options against the capabilities and failure modes that matter to your setup:
- Can it encode 2160p60 using a codec and protocol compatible with your YouTube configuration?
- Can it replay the source automatically and resume the loop after a process restart?
- Will the computer or hardware encoder, power supply and internet connection stay available for the intended run?
- Can a backup encoder take over while the same scheduled event remains active?
YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then checking whether the player rolls to the backup. Test your actual configuration; the documentation does not validate a particular encoder model or promise that any setup will preserve the event link through every failure. YouTube streaming tips.

Troubleshoot a missing link or failed restart
- The encoder is sending, but viewers have the wrong link: Confirm you shared the scheduled event’s watch-page URL, not the server URL or stream key. If you made a new event with Reuse settings, it may have a different watch page.
- The encoder restarted, but the event is not live: Check Live Control Room for the event’s current state, confirm the configured server URL and key, and look for a returned preview before assuming the broadcast resumed.
- The key works, but the old page is no longer usable: A reusable key is for ingest, not a promise that an ended event’s viewer page can be revived. Check whether YouTube still shows the original event as active; if it has ended, plan to share a newly scheduled event rather than promising the old link will return.
- Stream health degrades at 4K60: Compare the selected codec and bitrate with YouTube’s current table, check that the encoder is using CBR and a valid keyframe interval, and test upload capacity with headroom while limiting competing network use.
- The loop stops after a restart: Verify the encoder’s source-replay behavior and any auto-start or auto-stop selections copied from a prior event. Test a complete restart before relying on unattended operation.
