PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo reduce CPU use, first confirm OBS is looping the lesson correctly, then identify whether encoding, scene rendering, or media decoding is the main load. If OBS is using x264, test a compatible hardware encoder; simplify the scene and match the lesson files and output settings to what your viewers need. Measure each change in OBS Stats and your system monitor rather than assuming a single setting will fix every computer.
What is using resources in a 24/7 OBS stream?
A looping stream involves several separate jobs: OBS decodes the lesson video, renders the scene, encodes the output, and sends it to YouTube. CPU use can come from OBS or other running applications, and GPU rendering can become a separate bottleneck. The right fix depends on which part is under strain.
OBS says requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Without your computer specifications and measured utilization, there is no sound basis for naming an upgrade or predicting a percentage reduction.
Set up the loop before tuning performance
For one recorded lesson
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene.
- Select the lesson file and enable Loop in the source properties.
- Preview playback through the end of the file and confirm it starts again.
OBS’s Media Sources guide documents loop playback for a single file.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a playlist of lessons
- Install VLC if it is not already installed.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source and choose the files or playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist and verify that playback advances and repeats as expected.
OBS documents VLC Video as its playlist workflow. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. These are native playback options; a separate paid looping utility is not inherently necessary.
Establish a baseline before changing settings
- In OBS, note the selected encoder, output resolution, frame rate, active scene sources, and filters.
- Open View > Stats to observe rendering and encoding lag and dropped frames while the lesson plays.
- Check system CPU and GPU utilization in your operating system’s system monitor. Look at other active processes as well as OBS.
- Record the readings during a representative period, then change one setting at a time and compare under similar conditions.
OBS distinguishes rendering lag from encoding lag; a high overall CPU reading alone does not establish that encoding is the cause. Its encoding performance troubleshooting guide describes resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity as relevant performance factors.

Try a compatible hardware encoder if OBS uses x264
If the encoder is set to x264, OBS is using software encoding on the CPU. Check whether OBS offers a hardware encoder supported by your installed system, then test it at the intended stream settings. OBS documents NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox; availability depends on operating system and hardware generation. Do not assume that every GPU supports every encoder or offers the same quality.
Hardware encoding can move encoding work off the CPU, but it does not eliminate scene composition, rendering, media decoding, or work from other applications. Compare CPU utilization, OBS Stats, visual quality, and stream stability after switching. OBS notes that newer hardware encoders can deliver good quality with low performance impact, while older generations may provide lower quality at the same bitrate. See the OBS hardware encoding guide for compatibility qualifications.

Reduce unnecessary scene and video work
- Remove unused sources and filters. Browser sources and effects that do not contribute to the lesson still add work.
- Use appropriately sized media. If the stream output is smaller than 4K, avoid decoding oversized 4K lesson files when a suitable lower-resolution file is available. Keep enough detail for text and diagrams to remain legible.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate if needed. Lower settings can reduce rendering and encoding work, but also reduce visual detail or motion smoothness. OBS recommends trying 30 fps instead of 60 fps when 60 fps is not working.
- Change one variable at a time. Confirm whether the change improves the specific lag or utilization reading you are tracking.
For mostly static lessons, 30 fps may be adequate; choose based on the content and viewing experience rather than CPU alone. OBS’s performance troubleshooting guidance covers scene complexity, resolution, and frame rate.
Match YouTube settings to the output you choose
Bitrate primarily sets the outgoing data rate; it is not a direct CPU-reduction control. Choose the YouTube recommendation for your resolution, frame rate, and codec, and make sure your upload connection can sustain it reliably. Google / YouTube Help’s encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, lists these recommended bitrates for 30 fps:

These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular encoder or connection will sustain the stream. In OBS, use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS, set a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds. YouTube’s exact encoder-settings instruction is “Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” Follow the row corresponding to your selected codec and output mode, and test before going live. See Google / YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Before relying on a 24/7 broadcast, run a representative extended test. Check that the file or playlist continues playing, OBS remains responsive, YouTube reports a healthy stream, and the computer’s cooling and reconnect behavior are acceptable. OBS Stats and YouTube’s Live Control Room help distinguish local rendering or encoding trouble from delivery problems. YouTube recommends testing before a live event and monitoring stream health and messages during it; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Google / YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour encoder session will appear as a single complete archived video. Check current Live Control Room behavior and plan sessions around the archive requirement if a replay matters.
Common symptoms and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding lag in OBS Stats | Encoder workload or output settings | If using x264, test a compatible hardware encoder; otherwise test a lower output resolution or frame rate. |
| Rendering lag in OBS Stats | Scene composition, sources, or filters | Remove unnecessary sources and filters, then compare Stats. |
| High CPU but no OBS lag | Other applications or work not reflected as OBS lag | Check system processes and compare utilization during the same playback conditions. |
| Unstable or unhealthy YouTube stream | Upload capacity or encoder delivery settings | Check the Live Control Room, verify CBR and keyframe settings, and test whether the connection sustains the selected bitrate. |
| Playlist does not repeat or advances incorrectly | Playback source configuration | Confirm VLC Video and Loop Playlist settings, VLC installation, and matching 64-bit architecture where applicable. |
