A single 24/7 broadcast is therefore not a reliable way to produce one complete YouTube archive. Check the stream’s uninterrupted duration first; for future lectures, end and restart the stream in sessions comfortably shorter than 12 hours, and record a local backup.
Why a 24/7 stream may have only a partial archive
YouTube’s Archive live streams guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. The wording is a warning, not a guarantee that every long stream will fail—or that YouTube will always create a partial file. It does mean that one continuous day-long stream should not be relied on for a complete automatic archive.
Check the actual start and end timestamps for the uninterrupted encoder session, not just the lecture schedule. If that session ran beyond 12 hours, YouTube’s stated limit is the first explanation to consider. If it was shorter, the cited guidance does not establish a universal reason for a partial archive; inspect the archive, any local recording, and encoder and network event history before attributing the missing section to a particular cause.
Diagnose the missing portion
1. Confirm the session duration
Compare the broadcast’s actual start and stop times. If one session exceeded 12 hours, plan to end it and start a new one before that point next time. Leaving a buffer is prudent because YouTube does not specify a safe margin below the threshold or prescribe a restart schedule.

2. Compare the YouTube archive with a local recording
If the session was under 12 hours, compare the archive’s visible beginning and end with your local file, if one exists. Check whether that file is intact and whether its size continued to grow during the period missing from YouTube. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive and checking its integrity and file growth.
3. Review encoder and network events
Check the encoder’s status and event history, the YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, and any records of connectivity interruptions. YouTube recommends a reliable internet connection and says a disruption could break a stream; that general warning does not prove a network problem caused a particular missing archive segment.

Make future lecture streams easier to recover
- Plan separate sessions. For a long lecture schedule, end and restart the encoder in sessions comfortably shorter than 12 hours. YouTube does not specify a required buffer or ideal session length.
- Record locally while streaming. Choose a recording destination with enough available space, then verify during the event that the file is being written and growing.
- Test before the event. Prepare the encoder in advance, inspect the live preview, and monitor stream health, audio, and video while the lecture is underway.
- Keep the backup file somewhere suitable. An external SSD or hard drive may help if the recording device lacks enough local storage. A drive can preserve a recording made locally; it cannot recover footage that was never recorded.

Do not confuse a missing archive with limited DVR rewind
DVR is the ability for viewers to rewind during a live broadcast. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. That affects live viewing; it is separate from whether a post-stream archive is created. YouTube’s DVR guidance says viewers can still watch a recording of the entire stream once it is available when DVR is disabled. A rewind limit alone does not explain a partial saved video.

Can YouTube recover the missing section?
The guidance cited here does not establish whether a particular missing portion remains recoverable. First check the archive, local recording, stream details, and encoder and network history. If those do not resolve what happened, contact YouTube Creator Support if it is available to your channel. Do not assume that a local drive or a change to DVR settings can restore footage that was not saved.
