Choose the right handoff for the viewer’s next step
Start with one destination that matches what a viewer is likely to need: an explanation, tutorial, highlight, or archive. A specific invitation—such as “See the boss strategy at 04:12 in our walkthrough”—sets a useful expectation; “watch more” does not. If the next step is a sequence rather than one video, link a relevant playlist instead.

Put the video link where viewers can find it
1. Place the destination in the opening description lines
Edit the stream’s description in YouTube Studio and put the destination URL and its reason to watch near the beginning, before less important details. The rest of the description is behind an expansion control, so a link placed far down is easier to miss. Keep the destination title consistent with the title viewers will see on your channel. YouTube recommends unique descriptions and allows creators to use playlists when a group of videos is the more useful destination: Tips for video descriptions.
2. Pin a concise message during a horizontal live stream
- Open the live chat for your stream in YouTube Studio or the stream’s watch page.
- Post a short message that names the benefit of the destination and includes its URL. For example: “Need the full controller setup? Watch our settings walkthrough: .”
- On desktop, find your message in chat, select the three-dot menu beside it, then choose Pin. You can also pin a viewer’s message, but for a planned handoff your own message lets you control its wording.
- Confirm the message is pinned. If you pin a different message later, it replaces the existing pinned message; only the creator can pin or replace it.
YouTube’s live-chat instructions cover pinning and the one-message limit: Get started with live streaming — pin messages. Link clickability is surface-specific. In a vertical live feed viewed in the YouTube mobile app, viewers cannot click links in live chat or the channel description. If those viewers matter, include the exact video title and channel name in the message so they can search for it instead. See YouTube’s link-sharing guidance.

Add chapters to the destination video
Chapters divide an uploaded video into labeled sections with individual previews. They help viewers jump to a moment after following the live link; they are not a substitute for linking the video in chat or the description.
Chapter requirements
- The first timestamp must be 00:00.
- Include at least three timestamps in ascending order.
- Each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.
- Use labels that accurately describe the section and match the live message’s promise.
Add or update the timestamps
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Choose the destination video, then edit its description.
- Add timestamps and labels on separate lines, starting at 00:00. For example:
00:00 Setup and controls
01:24 First route through the level
03:10 Boss attack patterns
05:02 Safer finish - Save the description, then check the published video to confirm the chapter labels and times match the actual footage.
Do not promise a chapter time in chat unless the video has that section at the stated time. YouTube’s current chapter requirements are in Video Chapters.

Give viewers another step after they arrive
On an eligible uploaded video related to the stream, add an end-screen element for a specific video or playlist. YouTube allows end screens in the final 5–20 seconds, and the video must be at least 25 seconds long. Some formats and viewing surfaces are excluded; check YouTube’s eligibility details before planning around the feature. After publishing, review end-screen performance in Analytics to see whether viewers use that next step.

Use Live Redirect only for an event-to-event handoff
Live Redirect is for sending viewers at the end of one live stream to a Premiere or another live stream, not to a regular uploaded video. YouTube requires the sending creator to have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. Schedule the Premiere first, and tell viewers to wait briefly after the stream ends for the screen to reload. Troubleshoot a missing or ineffective handoff
- Viewers say the link is not clickable: Check whether they are watching the vertical live feed in the YouTube mobile app. Chat and channel-description links are non-clickable there; give viewers a searchable video title and channel name instead.
- The pin disappeared: Another message may have replaced it. Only one chat message can be pinned at a time, and only the creator can pin or replace it. Pin the intended message again.
- The description link is hard to find: Move it and its brief explanation into the opening lines, where viewers are more likely to see them before expanding the description.
- Chapters do not appear: Check that the first timestamp is 00:00, there are at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each section lasts at least 10 seconds. Save the description and verify the published video.
- Live Redirect does not offer the intended video: Redirect supports a Premiere or another live stream, not an ordinary upload. Use the description and pinned chat message for a regular video.
