YouTube 24/7 Stream Buffering on a NAS: How to Diagnose Playlist Disk Reads

Buffering does not automatically mean a slow NAS disk. Diagnose storage, file sharing, network, encoder, and YouTube ingest during the real playlist stream.

A buffering YouTube stream does not, by itself, prove that a NAS drive is too slow. The video passes through several stages—from playlist file access and the NAS share to the encoder, internet connection, and YouTube ingest—so diagnose the stage that stalls before changing hardware. Measure during the real playlist stream, then compare those observations with controlled file reads, network tests, encoder logs, and YouTube’s stream-health warnings.

Trace where the stream is stalling

A NAS-sourced live stream depends on a chain: the playlist player must open each file, the NAS must serve it, the local network must carry it to the streaming host, the encoder or streaming software must process it, and the host must upload it to YouTube. YouTube ingest and health checks are another possible source of trouble. A symptom at the viewer end can originate at any point in that chain.

  1. Record the symptom before changing settings. Note the time buffering begins, how long it lasts, and whether the stream recovers on its own. Preserve encoder or streaming-software logs with timestamps.
  2. Look for a repeatable trigger. Check whether the event coincides with a playlist item change, heavy NAS activity, another NAS job, or a YouTube Live health warning.
  3. Compare all measurements at the same time. NAS utilization, file-read throughput, encoder output, and YouTube warnings are most useful when correlated with the buffering timestamp.

Do not infer a drive-speed problem from one unrelated peak benchmark. Compare the same file and access path used by the streaming software, and account for cache effects, simultaneous workloads, and the playlist’s file-switching pattern.

Check the NAS while the stream is buffering

Inspect drive health and utilization

Use the NAS’s resource or storage monitor to check each drive’s health and activity while reproducing the issue. Synology recommends investigating a drive with unusually high utilization and replacing a drive reported as unhealthy or extremely highly utilized. High utilization is a clue to investigate, not proof that read throughput is insufficient; it may reflect another workload. Synology’s slow read/write troubleshooting guidance explains its recommendations.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Compare live reads with a controlled read

Read the same media file through the same mounted share path the streaming software uses. Observe throughput and latency during both the live playlist and an isolated read, if your NAS and host expose those metrics. Tools such as FIO can report bandwidth, IOPS, and latency; iostat reports device I/O activity. These tools describe the workload you run, not a universal threshold for a YouTube stream. A cached read, a sequential benchmark, and a playlist that repeatedly switches files may behave differently. FIO documentation describes its reported workload metrics.

Separate LAN speed from NAS file-service performance

A fast raw network test does not guarantee that SMB, NFS, or another file service is delivering the same rate to the streaming application. Measure NAS-to-host network throughput independently, then measure file transfer over the actual share path. QNAP recommends iperf3 to isolate the network layer; if that result is normal, investigate the file-service layer, and check drive health if disk performance appears abnormal. QNAP’s network-speed test guidance covers this distinction.

  • Raw network test is poor: investigate the NAS-to-host network path before blaming the disk.
  • Raw network test is healthy, but share reads are poor: investigate the file service, NAS workload, and storage activity.
  • Both tests look healthy outside the live run: repeat them during the playlist stream and correlate results with item changes, concurrent NAS jobs, and encoder logs.

Check encoder output and YouTube Live health

Compare the encoder’s configured settings with its actual outgoing bitrate and the applicable YouTube recommendations for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s guidance includes bitrate recommendations for ingest, including a minimum of 5 Mbps and a recommended 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264. These figures describe the encoder-to-YouTube ingest stream; they are not minimum NAS disk-read speeds. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing before going live. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates guidance.

Review YouTube Live’s health indicators for low bitrate, insufficient incoming video, configuration problems, and keyframe or GOP warnings. YouTube notes that keyframes sent too infrequently can cause buffering. Check the stream-health status and encoder logs at the same timestamps as the viewer symptom rather than assuming the NAS is responsible. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

If your workflow uses YouTube HLS ingest, Google’s HLS documentation recommends media segment durations of one to four seconds. It also cautions that smaller segments can lower latency while increasing rebuffering and reducing encoding efficiency. This HLS-specific recommendation is not a NAS read-speed target and does not apply to every ingest workflow. See Google’s HLS ingest guide.

What read speed should a NAS deliver?

There is no universal minimum NAS disk throughput established for this setup. The appropriate result depends on the NAS model, drive arrangement, share protocol, media and playlist behavior, streaming software, and encoder. Do not convert YouTube’s ingest bitrate recommendation into a disk benchmark threshold: ingest bitrate measures the stream sent to YouTube, while NAS read speed measures file delivery inside your setup.

When to replace a drive

Consider replacement only after NAS diagnostics identify an unhealthy drive or otherwise support that conclusion. Confirm the exact NAS model and its drive compatibility list before selecting a replacement. Buffering alone does not establish that a new disk is needed; a LAN, file-service, encoder, upload, or YouTube ingest issue can produce a similar symptom. Synology’s slow read/write troubleshooting guidance discusses drive utilization and health checks.

Or let it run in the cloud
