Set the display to turn off when you want, but make the sleep timeout longer than your stream or prevent sleep while the computer is plugged in. Then test your exact OBS source and monitor setup; an awake computer does not guarantee that display capture will keep showing a picture.
Set Windows 11 to turn off the screen without sleeping
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Set Turn my screen off after to the interval you want.
- Set Make my device sleep after to Never or to a time longer than your stream. Check the plugged-in setting in particular.
- Connect the computer to power for a long session. Microsoft documents separate screen-off and sleep controls in its Windows power and sleep settings guidance.
With these settings, Windows can turn off the display without putting the computer running OBS to sleep. The computer still needs power and a working network connection.
Prevent automatic sleep on a Mac while the display is off
- On a Mac laptop, open System Settings > Battery > Options. On a desktop Mac, look in the relevant Energy settings.
- Enable Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off.
- Keep the Mac connected to its power adapter for the stream.
That Apple Support setting prevents automatic sleep on power under the stated display-off condition. It does not guarantee that every OBS source will remain usable if an external monitor itself powers down. Apple also cautions that preventing sleep can increase power consumption. See Apple’s Mac sleep settings guidance.
Test OBS with the display off before a long stream
“How to keep OBS from stopping a YouTube stream when the display sleeps” has two separate parts: keeping the host computer awake and confirming that OBS can still capture the intended picture and audio. Verify both before relying on an unattended stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Start an unlisted or otherwise low-stakes YouTube test stream.
- Confirm OBS indicates that it is streaming, and check the preview and status in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Let the display turn off using the setting you plan to use.
- From a second device, check that the stream still has picture and audio. Also check the OBS preview and stream status.
- Test the exact source type and setup you intend to use: display capture, window capture, camera, or media source, along with the monitor arrangement.
This is a practical verification procedure, not a guarantee that every computer, GPU, monitor, and capture method behaves alike.
If OBS stays live but the picture goes black or freezes
First check whether the computer actually stayed awake. If OBS is still streaming but the picture is black or frozen, the issue may be the capture source rather than the power timeout.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Using display capture on a Windows laptop: Check OBS’s laptop guidance for GPU assignment and display-capture compatibility. OBS documents a newer display-capture method for Windows 10 version 1903 or later and OBS 27 or later; those requirements concern capture compatibility, not a universal fix for screen sleep. See OBS laptop troubleshooting.
- Using another source: Recheck that specific source and its dependencies after the display turns off. A camera or media source does not have the same dependencies as display capture, and behavior can vary by device and setup.
- Using an external monitor: Test with that monitor’s actual power-off behavior. Keeping the computer awake does not prove that a source capturing the monitor will continue to produce an image.
The available guidance does not establish that a dummy plug is necessary, nor does it establish one universal fix for every capture card, GPU, or display. Closing a laptop lid is not equivalent to turning off its display; lid behavior depends on the device and operating-system settings.
If OBS stops sending video to YouTube
When OBS’s local stream status stops, separate a sleep or power event from a network or encoder problem. If the encoder stops but YouTube still shows a live or reconnecting broadcast, review the broadcast’s auto-stop setting in YouTube Live Control Room. Auto-stop concerns the broadcast lifecycle; it does not keep the computer awake.

An OBS guide explains that auto-stop ends the broadcast after encoder streaming stops and disables reconnecting to that broadcast. The guide is older, so confirm the current labels and behavior in Control Room rather than relying on an old menu path. See OBS stream connection troubleshooting and YouTube’s live-streaming guidance.
