You can loop a folder of MP3s into a YouTube live stream by playing the files on a computer and sending that audio, together with a visual feed, through a live-stream encoder. YouTube’s computer-based workflow uses a stream URL and key from Live Control Room. The exact repeat-all and audio-routing steps depend on your chosen player and encoder, so verify those in their current documentation before you rely on them.
What you need
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream and live streaming enabled.
- A computer with the MP3 folder and an audio player that can repeat the playlist or folder.
- A live-stream encoder that can capture the player’s audio and provide a visual feed. YouTube’s encoder workflow is the relevant route for sending a computer-produced feed; an audio-only playlist still needs video.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream.
- Permission to livestream every recording you plan to use.
Enable YouTube live streaming first
YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before your intended launch rather than waiting until setup time. See YouTube’s guide to getting started with live streaming.
Set up the MP3 loop and route its audio
The specific controls vary among audio players and encoders. YouTube’s general guidance does not establish universal clicks for importing a folder, enabling repeat-all, or routing system audio. Follow the current documentation for the exact player and encoder you choose, and check each of these items:
- Import the folder or add its MP3 files to a playlist in the audio player.
- Enable the player’s repeat-all or loop-playlist mode; confirm it repeats the full list rather than a single track.
- Set the encoder to capture the audio output used by the player. If the player is silent in the encoder preview, check the selected system-audio device and the player’s output device.
- Add a visual feed, such as a static image or other video source supported by your encoder. YouTube’s audio stream workflow still needs a video feed.
- Use the encoder’s available settings to start with YouTube’s recommended stereo audio settings: 128 Kbps bitrate and 44.1 kHz sample rate. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of a particular sound or connection quality. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Connect the encoder to YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create a stream or select an existing one.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream, then enter them in the matching fields in your encoder. YouTube describes the key as the value that identifies where the encoder sends its feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it like a password: do not share it or include it in a public screenshot.
- Start the encoder’s transmission and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check the preview before starting the public stream.
- When the audio, visual feed, and stream health look correct, start the stream in Live Control Room if the encoder has not already started it.
For scheduled streams, YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least two hours beforehand and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. These are preparation recommendations, not an uptime guarantee. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.

Preflight checks for a radio-style stream
- Listen to the actual feed: check the encoder or YouTube preview for the correct player audio, reasonable volume, and an audible transition between tracks.
- Confirm the loop: observe enough playback to verify the playlist advances and returns to its start rather than stopping after one pass.
- Test the visual: confirm the video feed is present and is the intended image or scene.
- Check upload capacity: YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth 20% above the total stream bitrate. This is headroom guidance, not a guaranteed minimum. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Watch stream health: use the Live Control Room preview and health indicators during a test stream; do not assume a successful local preview proves the upload is stable. YouTube’s recommendations are at its live-streaming tips page.
Check music rights before going live
Only stream music you have the necessary rights to use. YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If its systems identify third-party content, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder, warn you to stop using the content, temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream, or terminate it following a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. Details are in YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
A license by itself may not prevent an interruption. YouTube says creators who licensed third-party content should ask the rights owner to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist. Its livestream terms and conditions also put responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. This is a platform requirement, not individualized legal advice.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
The stream does not appear in Live Control Room
- Check that the encoder has the correct stream URL and key for the selected YouTube stream.
- Confirm the encoder is transmitting and that the channel has completed live-stream enablement.
- Wait for the feed to arrive, then check the Live Control Room preview and health information.
The stream is live, but there is no music
- Confirm the player is playing and its output device matches the audio source selected in the encoder.
- Check that the encoder is capturing system or player audio rather than only a microphone input.
- Listen to the encoder or YouTube preview before starting the public stream.
The playlist stops instead of repeating
- Check the player’s current repeat setting and ensure it is set to repeat the playlist or folder, not just the current track or not at all.
- Verify the playlist contains the intended files and that the player remains open and playing.
- Because repeat controls differ by software, consult the player’s current documentation rather than relying on generic instructions.
The stream buffers or loses quality
- Check the connection’s upload capacity against the total stream bitrate, keeping YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Check Live Control Room stream health and run a test stream to distinguish a connection problem from a local playback or encoder issue.
- Reduce the stream bitrate if the available upload capacity cannot sustain it, then test again.
YouTube interrupts the broadcast
Check for copyright or Community Guidelines notices in YouTube Studio. For licensed third-party music, contact the rights owner about Content ID channel allowlisting; otherwise, remove content you do not have permission to stream.
